This is an example of how political correctness is almost always just knee jerk responses by people obsessed by pointless ineffectual trivia that doesn't hurt anyone.
I don't like xxxx or foster the people anyway but If you were going top take issue with the content of the song which the add doesn't even include wouldn’t the issue be with the song in the first place?
@Drinapropriatetouch There's no issue with songs saying things in themselves, but when it's used on an ad, then the content becomes important. Sure, you can't hear the offending lyrics in this ad, but anyone who knows the song is just going to think "school shooting" when they hear it. Does that sound like the sort of message that XXXX want accompanying their beer?
@84tangelo That's a load of crap. It's a catchy tune they've chosen to fit the demographic, what you're doing is over analysing and finding problems which don't apply in reality. How do you conclude that people automatically think 'shootings'? People don't automatically respond to content, they filter & interpret it, all they get here is the atmosphere of the song and so what if some do realise the song might have been about 'shootings'? did you go on a shooting spree because of this? I didn't.
@Drinapropriatetouch I don't think I'm over-analysing, because all I've ever been able to think of when I see this ad is "Why the hell did they use a song about a school shooting?". People react to content, but they also anticipate it when they know what's coming. You hear the first line of the chorus, and if you know the rest, it's going to come to mind automatically.
@Drinapropriatetouch And the song isn't encouraging school shootings, nor am I a psychopath, so going on a shooting spree myself didn't even cross my mind. Don't bring your reductio ad ridiculum in here. It really doesn't help your argument.
@Drinapropriatetouch I can't speak for the entirety of the human race, but if they're anything like me, the first thing to come to mind would be "Who picks a song like this for an ad about beer?" In light of this, I just think that the choice of song really detracts from the effectiveness of this ad for anyone actually familiar with the song.
@84tangelo Well, that being the case, there really doesn't seem to be any harm done to the public. If it puts people off the product isn't that just a problem for the brand?
It reminds me of when Holden used part of 'bohemian like you' because it too was catchy and had the line "You've got a great car" of course they left out the next line "Yeah what's wrong with it today"
If XXXX want to shoot themselves in the foot by picking the wrong song that's their problem.
@Drinapropriatetouch That's the only problem I had with the ad lol. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I actually like the song. And I do remember that Holden ad. I just think it's funny how these marketing groups don't realise what the associations are with these songs.
I fucking hate this ad. The commercial itself is a typical throw-away ad; easily forgotten and pointless. But that horrible, grating song. I haven't the slightest clue what the lyrics mean or what the song is supposed to be about, but it sounds like maggots on shit. Each time it comes on I scramble to find the mute button on my remote. I hate it so much that I found it here on YT in the off chance that a XXXX marketing person read this comment and they pull or change the ad. I can only hope.
Its not an offensive ad its just bloody stupid and the inhabitants of its little fictional universe are all very killable hipsters. That's all we're saying.
Ya'll can get your facts straight - this song's is directly related to school shootings and its themes - Sourced from interview with the band found on time out chicago website. As an Australian who lived in USA near school shootings at Virginia Tech, its upsetting that such themes can be in anyway associated with fun in the sun in AUS. the song choice is bad advertising & XXXX is about 4 years behind corona's advertising of hipsters in the sun. Anyway thats my 2 cents-No hate-just wanted 2 share
For all those people on their high horse about the song they've used ... Maybe you should actually find out what the song is about for real before commenting. Foster the People have actually said that the song is about when they were kids playing cowboys in the backyard ... Calm down.
Beautifully shot ad. All the complaints against it have done is made me realise how ridiculous the complaints actually are. And brought XXXX more publicity. Oh - and made me want to have a drink in the sun - preferably with Foster The People.
@BURRNTU Yeah ok and all those other interviews about how he confirms that it was about a school shooting was all a bunch of bullshit, right? Obviously you're too stupid to know what PR damage control is.
ATTENTION ALL YOU FUCKWITTS OUT THERE WHO THINK THIS SONG IS ABOUT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS!!! I SAW AN INTERVIEW WITH THE BAND '" FOSTER THE PEOPLE", THE SONG IS ABOUT PLAYING COWBOYS AND INDIANS WHEN THEY WERE KIDS!!! NOT ABOUT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS YOU DUMBFUCK WANKERS!!!
Stop getting pissed at this ad when you say it promotes School shootings and shit is just like saying that every time that song comes on the radio its promoting school shootings, Pull your heads in.
oh and everyone stop asking what the song is called, unless you have been living in north korea for the last six months, there is no way you could avoid this song, you don't deserve to know what its called if you have to ask. thankyou
Can't believe this ad has copped so much criticism over the song choice, it's a popular song. Clearly some people just need to find something to whinge about when really there isn't any need... speebyda, Queensland is amazing, how did you manage to take a beer commercial and somehow use it to run down the place. The problem isn't Queensland it's your self-righteousness.
anyone who is watching this in relation the 'channel 9' article, you are essentially part of an advertising scheme. No one gives a crap about the song's ad content and it's placement in a beer ad, not even channel 9. Not even the lowly news stations of seven and nine run out of article ideas that quickly. We all went on the ad because of the article, surprise surprise! first thing i see on the youtube homepage is a massive XXXX advertisment, you suck dick channel 9 make some proper news
@Macdoo2 who cares about the news, the point is, some sensitive cocksuckers took offence to a song in this ad. and don't say they don't make proper news because I'm pretty sure they do lol
@timtam20292 I hate getting in arguements over youtube, its usually a waste of time, but seriously do you have any idea how the world works, do you think its a coincidence that XXXX have launched a massive advertising campaign and suddenly this apparent controversy has arisen? are you really that naiive? and no channel 9 do not make 'proper' news, they make watered down shit, similiar to the very article you read that got you here
@Macdoo2 you're the one who decided to say 'you suck dick channel 9' that's a lovely thing to say isn't it. If you dont want to get into an argument, don't respond. simple. and of course something like this will get a mention in the news, major or not, its been included, but really who cares. either you're interested or you're not. that simple.
@timtam20292 you see, now I am in an arguement. I said 'suck dick', does that offend you? dont go on the internet. Why 'of course something like this will get a mention'? what does that even mean? Why would a thirty second beer ad which samples a song that MAY be offensive to SOME people, a song in which the lyrics in question are only sampled for 4 seconds at the end, get a mention? HOW IS THAT NEWS!!
XXXX a QLD beer promoting itself on NSW beaches(what the beaches in Parochial-ville shit up north?), with a song that mentions a teenager fantasizing about a Columbine style killing spree, doesn't matter if they mention it in the ad it's what the song is about. NIce one QLD, doesn't help that XXXX tastes like piss, shit through the eye of a needle anyone? I lived in QLD for 8 years it was the longest 47 years of my life (that would be relativity for all you confused QLD'rs).
@DaveScott69 i dont remember hearing anything about a teenage school shooting in the ad yes there was a bit of a mention about shooting a gun but not at anyone in particular and you cant complain 69 in your name please mr desperate shut your mouth !!!!
@Michelle198279 Have you heard the lyrics to the song they are using? Listen to the lyrics you fuckwit, and then come talk to me about the 69 in my name.
@DaveScott69 Who cares about the lyrics in the song. The advertisement is a separate piece of media, distinct from the song and it's message. Regardless, they could be playing a section of the song's chorus- the fact the music has been on the national top 40 charts for the past few months suggests the majority of the population accept the song when it is played without censorship on commercial radio. You are a hypersensitive troll who has manufactured a problem out of nothing.
@paddy9934 Additionally, I fail to see how this ad is offensive at all, there are no graphic images or offensive lyrics- the song reflects the season the product is targeting and if you have synthesised any qualms over this commercial, I think mummy needs to unwrap the cotton wool that obviously has been protecting you from the big bad world out there. Get a life.
@DaveScott69 lol getting ready to respond to everybody else you think's you're a dumb shit? better get your list ready because there's a lot of users to go through.
This is political correctness at it's worst. The song is NOT about a school shooting. The band describe the song as a whimsical throwback to when they were kids, running around their backyard playing Cowboys and Indians, and all other games young boys play. Its an innocent flashback to a simpler time... evokes images of relaxing in sunshine, running through sprinklers, balmy nights and refreshing cold beverages.... which, in my view, is the perfect song to accompany the XXXX Summer beer ad.
@ezzabella222 Maybe so, but I think it's safe to say that most people wouldn't know that, and would just think "school shooting". Not saying it's right, just saying it would be the initial reaction for most people. It's not about about political correctness in my view. It's about what advertising companies want associated with their product. I'm sure everything you said was the intention, but it didn't work too well.
if anything complain about the amount of tits and ass i see on an everyday add, and your meant to be the grown ups, your kids are going to learn nothing form you
@KILLtheMESSENGER101 nah i think you should shut up. thetank has simply voiced his opinion, doesn't give you the right to tell him to shut up. so i say to you SHUT UP.
Well done XXXX. I haven't tried summers yet but definitely will just because of this add, I love it and the fact that there are idiots crying about the song makes me love it more.
there are more important things to worry about in life than a fucking beer ad. Grow up for heavens sake. Its people like you that whine and complain about everything that make the world a miserable place
A couple of stray bullets in school yard, who cares, have a beer and relax, watch the next copy cat school massacre on the news straight after this advertisement, have a beer relax,.
Tell the kids at school that they came from animals but don't be suprised when they act like animals and shoot each other, have a beer relax.
Everybody in tune sing the song together.....gonna run run run.....have a beer relax.
Agree with many others here, it's just a song. They don't even play the while of the "graphic" line anyway, Jesus. When I first saw this ad I enjoyed it, didn't even know the song was a fucking controversial song so stuff and enjoy the ad you sensitive pricks. Fuck me, always a faggot who has to complain....
hey guys, if you like music that truly represents summer - check out this vid: youtube.com/watch?v=eQxE_-ZjAPM&context=C3149cffADOEgsToPDskLUKv9NbTjgZBqDVSKsp-8r
Think people need to calm down, the song has been chosen for its appealing tune... not its lyrics. This should be clear by the lack of lyrics! God damn people just want to have a whinge about anything they can!
half of people dont know what this song is about anyway... So why all the complaining, its a good, catchy song, so when people think about that song or hear it they will think of xxxx summer bright lager
wow people complaining about a song on an ad. You cant do anything in today world without some sooky losers complaining about it. If you dont like it dont watch it and shut the fuck up
i think this add is great. I know the song is "controversial" but is a very popular song many songs over the years have been repressed and judged badly due to "controversial lyrics" such as ode to Billy Joe, but does having controversial lyrics make the tune any less of a song? Music doesn't have to appeal to every single person
@allyjay93 and i think XXXX has done a great job in a marketing sense as the target age group really like this song.So if you try to get this add banned what next? will you try to have it wiped from history all together as some don't approve? some may be offended by what i am saying but i am more preaching the freedom of expressive art and freedom of speech rather then applauding the dark lyrics
@MetalHead5421 Are you talking about the song Right at the end, cause thats the one im trying to figure out as well, but its too short for soundhound and Shazam :S do you know yet just wondering?
It's pretty awesome how you folks are replying back to the people, if only companies had a more personable approach that you already have.
I think the music is fitting as far as the beat goes, and lyrics shouldn't really matter. Though, I can see there's almost too many hipster stereotypes, I counted quite a few Ray Ban style glasses being worn in the ad, and hipster style clothing, but that doesn't matter, I guess it's all about appealing to the younger demographic.
Hipsters are their target demographic, you gotta throw in many obvious stereotypes in a 30 second ad to let potential customers know the product is so cool that they will out hipster all their friends by being so individual and different. The irony, eh.
@Monad01 True. I wonder if hipsters are aware that being a hipster could end up being mainstream. E.g., if everyone's unique, then they share the quality of uniqueness, thus they're not unique. :)
Ads don't care about a songs meaning...they care about being catchy and watched for 30 seconds! Simple! Also, the more average the beer the better the ad needs to be :-)
@DaveScott69 Hi Dave. This song has been widely used across radio and in licensed premises recently. Like many songs used in TV ads the tune was chosen for its popularity with our consumers and its catchy beat rather than its lyrics, which have no association with the ad. We are comfortable that the part of the tune we have chosen within the ad doesn’t include anything controversial. We appreciate your feedback. It certainly wasn’t our intention to offend anyone. Thank you.
@xxxx I AGREE I don;t recall a mention of a school shooting ill admit there is a mention of shooting a gun but not at anyone person in particular or even a location
@DaveScott69 Are you honestly serious about this? by this logic, you want to ban this song from everywhere, how about when the radio stations play this song at the time when kids are in the car, is it inappropriate then?
@DaveScott69 I only came here to thumbs down your idiotic comment because you were on Nine msn. If you don't want to watch the add or listen to the song press the back button. Most people actually like the song and it's not as if it being used to advertise guns. Get a life, seriously!
@DaveScott69 you sound like one sad, pathetic motherfucker. the song is widely popular and people listen to it anyway. so stop being such a softcock pussy and man the fuck up.
@DaveScott69 People like you are why I hate the general population. There is nothing offensive in this ad. You're just complaining for the sake of complaining. You are somehow offended by this, yet you are somehow exempt from your own criticisms because you can post swear words to get your point across. Right on man.
@DaveScott69 Well why don't complain about Foster the People for writing and performing this song. An easy listing melody of a tragedy, You need pull the head out of you're arse. In 1 years time when the song has well and truly dropped of the top 40, and you hear it, up goes the radio volume and you WILL be singing along to it, rekindle memories associated with the period on when it was in the top 40........and be blissfully ignorant on what the song truly means.
@growlus I don't think anyone who honestly loves a song forgets forgets its meaning just because it drops out of the top 40. If you are the kind of person who ONLY listens to music because it's trending, you have no right to enter a debate about a song's meaning. Go back to your T&A music videos, bro.
@timtam20292 i saw this on ninemsn to, seriously what the hell, who cares if this song is about a kid thinking about shooting its a catchy tune and its the kind of song thats played at a happy event. im sick of all of these over sensitive parents and shit that are turning the worlds children into pussies and fags, kids need to be more exposed to certain situations
Did the people who made this ad even listen to the song they chose?? The chorus is: "All the other kids with the pumped up kicks, better run, better run - out run my gun. All the other kids with the pumped up kicks, better run, better run - faster than my bullet." Good ad, poor choice in song (the song is great - just not suitable for a beer advertisement!)
@SmoOthii Yeah - I've noticed they cut the song short on ads for Foster the People's album as well. I've never actually complained about an ad before... but I still think this is in poor taste. The ad is good and the song is good... but just not together.
@CASPOU Thanks for your feedback. 'Pumped up kicks' has been widely used across radio and in licensed premises recently. The tune was chosen for its popularity with our consumers and its catchy beat rather than its lyrics, which have no association with the ad. We are comfortable that the part of the tune we have chosen within the ad doesn’t include anything controversial. It certainly wasn’t our intention to offend anyone. Thank you.
@xxxx All the other KIDS... advertising aimed at children laws?? very bad decision... also being a school shooting song... very distasteful... whoever approved this had better have some explaining to do!!!
@Heartbreakuh yes i lesten to music, but i have 2 young children that i dont want to listen to that garbage.... songs about school shootings belong in Emo's headphones, not on the television or commercial radio...
@robmac59 U must be that bloody stupid if u didn't see the other comments regarding what the song was a week or so ago, just below on this page! Fourex Summer Lager is SHIT!! And so is Fourex Gold!!
I love this ad. Something about sitting under a canopy of bottles, in the middle of summer, resonates with me. I must be part of the target demographic.

officialjohnblunt 1 month ago
This is political correctness at it's worst. The song is NOT about a school shooting. The band describe the song as a whimsical throwback to when they were kids, running around their backyard playing Cowboys and Indians, and all other games young boys play. Its an innocent flashback to a simpler time... evokes images of relaxing in sunshine, running through sprinklers, balmy nights and refreshing cold beverages.... which, in my view, is the perfect song to accompany the XXXX Summer beer ad.

@ezzabella222 song name?
AssyrianKingz13 1 month ago
@ezzabella222 Maybe so, but I think it's safe to say that most people wouldn't know that, and would just think "school shooting". Not saying it's right, just saying it would be the initial reaction for most people. It's not about about political correctness in my view. It's about what advertising companies want associated with their product. I'm sure everything you said was the intention, but it didn't work too well.

jenerator6288 1 month ago 3
i think this add is great. I know the song is "controversial" but is a very popular song many songs over the years have been repressed and judged badly due to "controversial lyrics" such as ode to Billy Joe, but does having controversial lyrics make the tune any less of a song? Music doesn't have to appeal to every single person
allyjay93 1 month ago
@allyjay93 and i think XXXX has done a great job in a marketing sense as the target age group really like this song.So if you try to get this add banned what next? will you try to have it wiped from history all together as some don't approve? some may be offended by what i am saying but i am more preaching the freedom of expressive art and freedom of speech rather then applauding the dark lyrics

Great job!
iamlouisbullock 1 month ago 2
@iamlouisbullock
Hipsters are their target demographic, you gotta throw in many obvious stereotypes in a 30 second ad to let potential customers know the product is so cool that they will out hipster all their friends by being so individual and different. The irony, eh.
Monad01 1 month ago
@Monad01 True. I wonder if hipsters are aware that being a hipster could end up being mainstream. E.g., if everyone's unique, then they share the quality of uniqueness, thus they're not unique. :)
iamlouisbullock 1 month ago
Ads don't care about a songs meaning...they care about being catchy and watched for 30 seconds! Simple! Also, the more average the beer the better the ad needs to be :-)

DaveScott69 2 months ago
@DaveScott69 Hi Dave. This song has been widely used across radio and in licensed premises recently. Like many songs used in TV ads the tune was chosen for its popularity with our consumers and its catchy beat rather than its lyrics, which have no association with the ad. We are comfortable that the part of the tune we have chosen within the ad doesn’t include anything controversial. We appreciate your feedback. It certainly wasn’t our intention to offend anyone. Thank you.

INSINR8R 1 month ago
@DaveScott69 Well why don't complain about Foster the People for writing and performing this song. An easy listing melody of a tragedy, You need pull the head out of you're arse. In 1 years time when the song has well and truly dropped of the top 40, and you hear it, up goes the radio volume and you WILL be singing along to it, rekindle memories associated with the period on when it was in the top 40........and be blissfully ignorant on what the song truly means.
growlus 1 month ago 4
@growlus I don't think anyone who honestly loves a song forgets forgets its meaning just because it drops out of the top 40. If you are the kind of person who ONLY listens to music because it's trending, you have no right to enter a debate about a song's meaning. Go back to your T&A music videos, bro.
