ok can someone please reply to this, i love jazziii's, but theres one problem every time i shred, the pick slips, not like out of my hand it just moves backwards out of the place i want it at. i think im used to holding the bigger picks? is there a different pick holding technique to the jazz iii's? i basically, just put it on the side of my index finger, not on the rolly part but the flat side (like paul gilbert) but i dont think im supposed to hold a jazz III like that
always used paul gilbert's and ibanez grip picks...4 months ago I've tried a jazzIII for the first time...and I've never looked back...that thing is awesome! now I really can't play without one (almost..)
Absolutely agree. Absolutely. And btw, as the name implies the Jazz III is EXCELLENT for other styles as well (I don't play metal). Also PLEASE review the Ultex Jazz III. It's truly amazing. Spent YEARS looking for it, as it turns out... Great (seriously) review work here. Direct, knowledgable, no babbling.
MAN UR RIGHT, i jst started using them , they change the way u pick completely, their harder 2 use because their heavier than anything ive ever played with but are very giving
btw their max grip jazz 3's now
kinda fucks ur index finger , it digs in very hard
Im getting some jazz III picks (the Ultex kind) i've tried the Carbon fiber Jazz II, the red Jazz III and the 1.14 Standard Ultex picks (All Jim Dunlop Brand), but I like the Ultex and The Red Jazz III picks the most but I hope the Jazz\Ultex combo are pretty good, if not, better than What I now currently use, but im still open minded to any suggestions, so yeah.
Jazz III are great for shredding, but for digging into a chugging rhythm, they're no good... at least for me. Another big difference is the gauge. Jazz III are 1.18-1.38 (and thicker), and the classic greenie is .88 (used them exclusively for 20+ years). I picked up a couple Jazz III's and after a couple of days, I came to the conclusion I just couldn't dig in the same. I went back to and picked up some Dunlop 1.5mm Gator Grip and that is the pick for me now.
i recently got jazzIII pick and within about 5 mintues i shaved off all the skin on my index finger between the fingernail and the first knuckle there. because its so small, my finger rubbed on the strings.
can anyone help me? i've been using a jazz3 and stubby jazz nearly 2 years now. yesterday i started fooling around with a dunlop ultex sharp(way bigger than a jazz). i was playing alot more faster and cleaner. its just i hate that sound i get like in 2:38-2:42. can anyone recommend a pick that doesnt get that sound and is bigger than the jazz3 and stubby jazz.
@Tomastheskater Also with a pointy pick (jazz 3 or sharp) they make you play with more angle bcus the release is very short. A regular 351 standard shape U play flatter for a shorter release. So the shape affects ur angle of attack, position & overall mechanics. Ppl like pointy stiff picks bcus they're easy to play with & glide, but I've heard players with lack of control lack full tone & have weaker notes, the thicker the pick the more it dampens high overtone/harmonics, but some want that.
Hmm I think I've played with a jazz 3 pick before and I didn't really like it cuz every time I would hit the string it would hit my thumb or something I am probably use to a regular pick but I'm thinking of getting a jazz 3 if it makes me clean up my picking, which I am having a little trouble on.
I had and i still have a bunch of them , the red ones small, the black ones in small size and XL too, and the ultex in small and XL. Played them a lot, did sound tests, mute tests, etc. For me the red ones sounds a bit mellow on the jazz side of things, less attack; the black ones sounds just about right, love the tone in them, and the ultex is more of a sharper sound, really sounds clear and clean, with overdrive in palm mutes you get a thicker fuller sound.
It's all bout habit...when you change pick you have to caliper your picking in order to reach the better sound...he is accustomed to play with jazz III so he play cleaner with this pick...it's all bout habit!
i just got jazz 3s today, my alternate picking sounds so much smoother! there's not a lot of *plucking* sound. I can throw down legato stuff without the pick catching or stumbling. my sweeps also even sound a bit cleaner. Even though this pick is smaller than standard and it'll take a bit of time to get used to, im pretty impressed with it!
I am in love with jazz III picks but i cant ever strum with them. i normally use a dunlop tortex .73. Got any advice? (i play lots of punk/metal/jazz)
Hey your videos are great i've been subscribed for a while. i'm really struggling with tremolo picking on the highter strings. could you do some kind of technique tutorial about it?
i finally got a 6 pack of the red nylons. i made a really good decison to buy these. I play metal rythm and a lillt bit of leads and these picks are perfect for it. Gives u a much cleaner and brighter sound. Its weird how every little thing in guitar playing can give u a different sound.
I have two favourites Jazz III (red one) and violet rotex one. Same size and similarly pointy. I would use only the red one, but I have noticed I have a problem. When doing lots of termolo picking stuff, I cannot get the J III in the same position because my right hand starts tos sweat. So at the end of a songs I am almost strumming with my thumb. If I use more force to hold the pick, well then mostly some tremolo picking is ruined, because I am not fluent enough. Any tips?
Also one of my favourite features with the jazz III is the text working as grip. I've tried some ibanez picks with some rubber grip wich tore off but since the text is pretty much molded on the jazz III it wont go away.
@motopsycho1987 How are they better? Do they have a good gripping surface? because the Jazz III slips when my hands start to sweat from playing too long, and I'm looking for a pick that can fix that for me.
what about pick thicknesses? is there any particular advantage? i use 3.0-4.0 mm (lignum vitae wood, jazz III shaped ones, highly recommended!). i find that i have more control if the pick is thicker.
a fast way to check this out is to take an old credit card an trace it from a regular pick then take a nail file and plane both sides to a point then round the tip a little then get rid of the excess. you will see and feel what he`s talking about.
the jazz III is the greatest hing i've ever done also...ever since i saw that john petruci get's his massive articulation from these things..i improved everything that i wanted to fix in a matter on months
nice vid. man, yea fucking tortex are pissing me off, they make hella string noise especially when soloing, so would you reccomend the red jazz 3 or black? whats more comfortable would you say?
Should I get the Jazz 3? I use Derlin 1.5 and seem to like it just fine but would the Jazz 3 give me any benefits? I like open chords and sweeping strumming.
The tortex jazz looks really cool, I'm gonna try them. I've been using Paul Gilbert Ibanez picks, but they're out of stock, wich one of the jazz picks is the most similar?
Now that they make the JazzIII in tortex, I may check them out. Always hated nylon feel picks. Used nylon before Tortex came out, and when I made the switch (back in 86) I never looked back. Nothing else feels right to my fingers. I use Tortex .88, and put my own bevel on them.
I think the Ultex Jazz III ist the best pick ever! I got it today and don´t know how to describe it. It feels like the pick hardy hits the strings. Much less tiring at high speed for me. I did not expect a noticable difference to the red one, but it´s really astonishing!
For some reason the red nylons have more of a slick 'release' of the string than the black stiffos. That's kind of why I prefer them. They're very similar, but if you play with one for a week, then another one, you'll notice a very small difference.
theres also the new small sized red jazz lll with a more grippy surface, it kind of feels like it has little teeth grabbing into your finger, i just got them and they took my regular black ones out of commision. they NEVER slip no matter how much your fingers sweat.
@1080Cooldude There are a lot of varieties of the Jazz 3 picks. The regular ones can be red or black, they sound a bit different. Black's material is more porous and les slippery. They also can be XL (both colors), grip enhanced (I believe only available in red) or even Eric Johnson signature XL model. There used to be one with a different material, and now they cut Tortex picks in Jazz 3's original size. This pick design is a winner.
@Judoking96 I agree with GuitarGnosis. But I would like to add that the red have a slightly warmer sound with let attack. The blacks are much brighter and have a much more distinct attack on the notes.
@Judoking96 Off the top of my head I think its something to do with the dye they use to colour the pics, the red ones kinda feel... greasy or lubed up more than the blacks.
dude i just bought some jazz 3's today and i love them, i checked out this video cuz i wanted to see if they wer worth buying another pak, they are, ATTETION ALL COMMENTARS, BUY THIS PICK
Hmm... I tried jazz picks and I thought the were a little too small, maybe I should try the XL. What was said about the noise and stuff is mainly due to the size of the pick though and the point on it so you could just get regular picks except in the pointy variety.
For me, I find that ultex sharps are the perfect pick, doesn't wear easily, nice and charp on the edges for some good bite and seems to be a little smaller than standard picks too so it basically suits me perfectly :)
I have a couple questions. If you had to choose between one guitar pick, what would it be? Another question is do you use the jazz 3 more than the v picks? And finally how long have you've been using the jazz 3s? Feel free to answer me back.
i only use jazz iii picks i got the red one, black one and the yellow one (ultrex) i prefer the ultrex since its got a better grip than the other two mainly because more text is on it and th text sticks out more so it really helps in my opinion
Haha, clean picker. I bought a pack and I didn't really want to redefine my picking tech. But I should get over my indolence right nao because everyone says that it's so much better. Funny thing is, I've been using tortex lately.
My recommendations, if you are a guy who likes to pick a lot of phrases, licks (fast playing) Jazz lll is brilliant. if you are an economy picker there is better picks bigger picks work better somehow for me for economy picking more rounded picks help aswell for smooth.
if you are a legato player jazz lll is a good consideration but there is better picks for that job.
If your looking for minimal string noise and legato playing or with hybrid picking i would go for a nylon pick 1 mm Jim Dunlop.
they are definately different to normal jazz 3s, its weird but i almost prefer the normal ones i cant decide yet, the point on my max grips wasnt the same and the tone isnt as rounded or crisp god knows, the grip stuff makes the pick slightly thicker and gives you the feeling that your fingers arent connected to the whole pick very strange not sure i like it yet
Lately I've been using Jazz 3's again, but the stiffos this time. I like those way better than the nylon. I tend to alternate between that and a V-Pick. They make their own Jazz 3 type pick but I don't have one (or rather I did but I kinda...swallowed it....yeah). Then there are the Jazz 3 Ultex series. Thicker than the stiffos, and very hard. I'm a little mixed on those.
just bought these picks recently and they are the best guitar picks I've used so far.If you play fast leads or rhythms I strongly recommend them. Nice vid dude
I just tried a 2 mm (i think nylon, definitely not tortex, it's glossy and dark purple) dunlop. It's awesome, way better than Jazz III and the tortex 1.14s I was using!
It's a Dunlop 500 Series. It's what Yngwie Malmsteen uses (1.5mm). It's actually Delrin (same thing as Tortex) but with a different finish (polished).
I might give these a go. I currently use a 3mm big stubby and it is the best pick Ive tried. before I got my big stubby I used to sharpen all of my picks with a hobby knife to get that sharp point anyway XD
It would be a much better demonstration if you played the same phrase with all the picks. Who cares what the "string noise" sounds like on it's own - we care what the notes sound like. I played with a Jazz III for around a year, and it helped my playing tremendously. I've recently returned to the green tortex because every note sounds and feels 5x better. The jazz pick is too thick and sucks the life out of the notes - not to mention it makes playing chords far more difficult.
We're opening a music section in our secondhand shop, starting with some new Ibanez guitars. After this video, I will be sure to try the Jazz picks when we get them in stock. I believe some were included in the pick display I ordered. I'll favourite your video and share it with our customers.
im not much of shredder but when i went to guitar teacher he let me use a jazz III pick i was like cool becuz i was so use to using regular guitar picks, i then thought about it becuz my picking technique was sucking for speed so i went out and bought a pack of jazz III and i felt the difference almost immediately, the jazz III let me speed up, gave me more control and i was picking alot cleaner. Get these picks they are worth it!!!!
I actually started playing guitar with these picks (I like the new eric johnson Jazz III's even better)............super clutch........holding anything bigger feels like I'm holding a credit card though......
A jazz I is great 4 rhythm and pinch harmonics. A jazz II is great 4 shredding and pinch harmonics.. I was using a jazz III for a while until i tried the others. I like the jazz II the best.
I've been playing on with the black ones for several months now, but the other day someone gave me the nylon red. The difference is not small at all - the reds are much better for picking. As a matter of fact, I found that the black ones were not all that much better than any regular sized pick. It's not just the size that helps, it's the side profile shape. If you hold a black and red back-to-back you'll see that the blacks are have a rounded edge all around while the reds are slightly sharper.

man you aren't lying in this video. I picked up some Jazz iii's the other day and have been using them all day today. I've been playing for 12 years and I'm completely sold on these picks, I haven't tried them on my electric yet or with my band, but just doing some exercises on my acoustic today I found my picking to be much clearer and faster.
Hmm, I found every point you made about the Jazz 3's, applied to my usage of Tortex (I just switched to the Yellow Tortex .73, after using .88's for ages (Hate them now)) love the .73's, I can get a varied thing happening, I can have a sorta saturated sounding palm muted chord, or a really strong accented kinda chord. Might give Jazz 3's a shot when I get some new strings.
Jazz 3 what can I say red , black, and Eric J they are hard speed up on the low e but tortex jazz pitch black is so easy. They have good grip and sound wonderful but they wear faster but at least i can play better
Hey, I got both today, and wow, its a tough choice, the black ice has a little more room for your thumb but I dunno, im still trying both. I think the black ice has a little more of a stronger pick attack (wich is what I like) but I haven't decided yet.
i use jazz III and the blue tortex, those are my main picks

Have you compared the Jazztone to the Jazz 3?
andy92811 1 year ago
nice vid. man, yea fucking tortex are pissing me off, they make hella string noise especially when soloing, so would you reccomend the red jazz 3 or black? whats more comfortable would you say?
yannigogolax 1 year ago
Try Dava picks or Fred kelly Bumblebee picks...
Dunlop Tortis picks aren't my favorites...
LinkBulletBill 1 year ago
Should I get the Jazz 3? I use Derlin 1.5 and seem to like it just fine but would the Jazz 3 give me any benefits? I like open chords and sweeping strumming.
andy92811 1 year ago
go with the red nylon and if it is too slippery use some gorilla snot (by some i mean a very small amount...it is sticky as shit)

So do jazz 3's give you faster alternate picking ?
1234Sebster 1 year ago
no, it lets you use less hand motion. it's not an instant 'speed+5' kind of thing.

@1234Sebster it makes it easier.

The tortex jazz looks really cool, I'm gonna try them. I've been using Paul Gilbert Ibanez picks, but they're out of stock, wich one of the jazz picks is the most similar?
Roflmop 1 year ago
Now that they make the JazzIII in tortex, I may check them out. Always hated nylon feel picks. Used nylon before Tortex came out, and when I made the switch (back in 86) I never looked back. Nothing else feels right to my fingers. I use Tortex .88, and put my own bevel on them.
zedchuva 1 year ago
try tortex 1.0 you might find it better, I did

I think the Ultex Jazz III ist the best pick ever! I got it today and don´t know how to describe it. It feels like the pick hardy hits the strings. Much less tiring at high speed for me. I did not expect a noticable difference to the red one, but it´s really astonishing!
DonaldDrug 1 year ago
whats honestly the difference between the red nylon and black stiffo?
Ive tried both now and they feel the same to me
Judoking96 1 year ago 3
For some reason the red nylons have more of a slick 'release' of the string than the black stiffos. That's kind of why I prefer them. They're very similar, but if you play with one for a week, then another one, you'll notice a very small difference.
GuitarGnosis 1 year ago
theres also the new small sized red jazz lll with a more grippy surface, it kind of feels like it has little teeth grabbing into your finger, i just got them and they took my regular black ones out of commision. they NEVER slip no matter how much your fingers sweat.
johnathonkuhn 1 year ago
@GuitarGnosis thats weird because in the whole video you are playing with a black pick
1080Cooldude 1 year ago
@1080Cooldude There are a lot of varieties of the Jazz 3 picks. The regular ones can be red or black, they sound a bit different. Black's material is more porous and les slippery. They also can be XL (both colors), grip enhanced (I believe only available in red) or even Eric Johnson signature XL model. There used to be one with a different material, and now they cut Tortex picks in Jazz 3's original size. This pick design is a winner.
mindflashbr 1 year ago
@GuitarGnosis ivealready played with a jazz lll but the jazz l is better i think
mynamis1192 1 year ago
@Judoking96 There's not a SMALL difference.
There's a huge diff between the Red and black jazz 3.
Reds are smoother and more flexible than the blacks
blacks are stiffer.
if u compare them back to back u can hear that the black one is brighter and has little more pick noise than the red.
I personally prefer reds as the are smoother and the sound is fuller TO my Ears.
TSS1994 1 year ago
@Judoking96 I agree with GuitarGnosis. But I would like to add that the red have a slightly warmer sound with let attack. The blacks are much brighter and have a much more distinct attack on the notes.
Darklordbrink 1 year ago
@Judoking96
its like a rosewood neck VS a maple neck.
the red one is like maple.. its gives a smoother sound.
the black one is like rosewood... its more like.. distorted.. grindy
richogem 1 year ago
@Judoking96 Off the top of my head I think its something to do with the dye they use to colour the pics, the red ones kinda feel... greasy or lubed up more than the blacks.

shit...i lost my jazzIII pick :(
chakolo 1 year ago

AASKICKBUTT 2 years ago
Are the Ultex Jazz III's sharper than the black Jazz III's?
mrichman 2 years ago
not really
i only use jazz iii picks i got the red one, black one and the yellow one (ultrex) i prefer the ultrex since its got a better grip than the other two mainly because more text is on it and th text sticks out more so it really helps in my opinion
TheRiceOfEvil 1 year ago
the difference in tone is only because "regular" pick isn't sharp; that difference would be with any other sharp pick
circleofpit 2 years ago
and also the material. the jazz 3's have a really smooth nylon material that really stays smooth for a LONG time. there unlike any other pick iv seen

Haha, clean picker. I bought a pack and I didn't really want to redefine my picking tech. But I should get over my indolence right nao because everyone says that it's so much better. Funny thing is, I've been using tortex lately.

Ive experienced that 4 years ago when i got my mmjp but Ultex is better than them picks showed here but video still deserves 5 :)!
Sickindian5 2 years ago
My recommendations, if you are a guy who likes to pick a lot of phrases, licks (fast playing) Jazz lll is brilliant. if you are an economy picker there is better picks bigger picks work better somehow for me for economy picking more rounded picks help aswell for smooth.
if you are a legato player jazz lll is a good consideration but there is better picks for that job.
If your looking for minimal string noise and legato playing or with hybrid picking i would go for a nylon pick 1 mm Jim Dunlop.

Anyone tried the MAX GRIP JAZZ 3 picks? How are they????
laiho04 2 years ago
they are definately different to normal jazz 3s, its weird but i almost prefer the normal ones i cant decide yet, the point on my max grips wasnt the same and the tone isnt as rounded or crisp god knows, the grip stuff makes the pick slightly thicker and gives you the feeling that your fingers arent connected to the whole pick very strange not sure i like it yet

I try all kind of picks but i always back on Jazz III !!!!
MarkoVesovic 2 years ago
Lately I've been using Jazz 3's again, but the stiffos this time. I like those way better than the nylon. I tend to alternate between that and a V-Pick. They make their own Jazz 3 type pick but I don't have one (or rather I did but I kinda...swallowed it....yeah). Then there are the Jazz 3 Ultex series. Thicker than the stiffos, and very hard. I'm a little mixed on those.
Draugoth 2 years ago
I used to ALWAYS use the Tortex 1.5mm until I tried the Red Nylon Jazz IIIs. I noticed a huge difference between the two immediately.
One thing I noticed is that the Tortex picks deteriorate and become dull after short usage.
The Jazz IIIs I've been using haven't one bit started to break down.
My only problem is that I keep losing them!

I just tried a 2 mm (i think nylon, definitely not tortex, it's glossy and dark purple) dunlop. It's awesome, way better than Jazz III and the tortex 1.14s I was using!
IpkisStanley 2 years ago
probably a dunlop stubby
rockinsurfkid 2 years ago
It's a Dunlop 500 Series. It's what Yngwie Malmsteen uses (1.5mm). It's actually Delrin (same thing as Tortex) but with a different finish (polished).
timmonsisbest 2 years ago
I might give these a go. I currently use a 3mm big stubby and it is the best pick Ive tried. before I got my big stubby I used to sharpen all of my picks with a hobby knife to get that sharp point anyway XD

jazz 3 are good picks.
But Jim dunlop stubby 2.00mm or 3.00 mm picks are amazing. They give positive attack to play super fast licks that's what i heard xD

The jazz pick is too thick and sucks the life out of the notes - not to mention it makes playing chords far more difficult.

im not much of shredder but when i went to guitar teacher he let me use a jazz III pick i was like cool becuz i was so use to using regular guitar picks, i then thought about it becuz my picking technique was sucking for speed so i went out and bought a pack of jazz III and i felt the difference almost immediately, the jazz III let me speed up, gave me more control and i was picking alot cleaner. Get these picks they are worth it!!!!

Grafkid 2 years ago
Hey, I got both today, and wow, its a tough choice, the black ice has a little more room for your thumb but I dunno, im still trying both. I think the black ice has a little more of a stronger pick attack (wich is what I like) but I haven't decided yet.
