this guy is playing more of a westernized beat on the tombak, this is more like what you would hear on the drom set not in traditional persian music. i am not saying its a bad thing. i dont think htat it should be mixed with computer generated beats.
I must say that I disagree with you.The beats are not westernized. I have never seen any beats like these ones which is played on a drum. If you have a sample please let us know.
Moreover, these beats are inspired from Persian poems. If you are familiar with any Persian poem, rhythms and music you can understand the logic behind the beats.
emeshhollandi is right and wrong. He is right about the fact that its not necessarily westernized. However there is no relationship between tombak and persian poems. You can play tombak and sing a poem but tombak is less than 100 years old and only in past 50 years it has been used in classical music(sonati)
Actualy there is a very direct relation between poems and rhythms. Every poem has a particular rhythm (in Farsi called "Wazn"),for example "mafa'elon faelaton mafa'elon faelat". This kind of rhythms are very common in Persian poems,e.g. Hafez, and in traditional Iranian music named as "kereshmeh". You can exactly play this beat with Tombak. The same thing can be done for every poem.
By the way, you better mention a reference when you talk about history of Tombak. The past history of Tombak is not known. checking old poems of Rumi and others, confirms that Tombak was an instrument in Iranian music since long time ago.
if this guy were to mix his talents into a computer ad some more sounds he could make a fortune, with rly cool sounds and a huge inventory of creativity!
Amazing!! Maybe in 10 years my hands will be ready to start learning to play this drum... For now I'll just have to watch this over and over, and dream about the future : )
I watched your video about 40 times and although I am quite expert at tombak, I cannot even get close to reproducing you. Any interest in slowing down your technique and filming it so that I can learn from you?
Finally a real Tonbak solist, who use all the capacities of fingers, hand and suonds, out of any solid backgraound of great masters of persian traditional music. Congredulations. you really deserve 5 stars.
