this is a good idea but what if it malfunctions and sends the person into wanting to kill people or make them want to do things that are impossible. You would have to make sure that this will never go wrong.
people would just wind up switching it on indiscriminately, whenever they could;
it has been tried before and people and test animals with control over implants in pleasure centers just become total junkies, to the point of neglecting everything save for the high of estimulation
@eyhexs obviously surgeons won't give users full access to the iPlant. ensuring that the stimulation remains conditional is key to the efficacy of this technology and requires appropriate encryption and policy. we discuss this on the iPlant website, check it out.
I think every normal person should know how to motivate themselves. Even the idea sounds to me like a life that isn't worth living. Who is this stupid anyway? It is not that easy, too.
yea people 'should' know how to motivate themselves but a lot of people don't, won't be able to work it out, and really suffer from it. the iPlant is primarily for them.
there won't be a "pleasure button", stimulation will be conditional on the user performing a pre-defined behaviour like pulling a stroke on a rowing-machine. check out the iPlant seminar video or the website, they go into more detail.
My problem with this is that in order for this type of technology to be viable (read legal issues of providing a service and safeguarding corporate legal responsibility) is that this has no doubt been tested on humans. How many experiments were conducted without the subjects knowledge?
(Hypnotics, tranquilizers and other types of drugs make it easy to induce a short term subconscious state with virtually no memory of the experience).
As man moves away from nature, he becomes less and less perfect.
Absolute Power corrupts absolutly.
With these iPlants people could be programed to do other things like fall in line, rat on their friends and family or get on a Jet plane or Carrier to go to another Country to fight a War. I think we get enough Brainwashing from our media, without the help of a Brain implant.
just it has a possible use as a brainwash (according to irrational conspiracy theorists) doesn't mean that we should let this opportunity go away to effectively cure depression without all that Prozac shit with side effects
it makes sense in theory, but theory is a treacherous thing. yes someone could program himself to be motivated to do incredible things, but someone could get addicted to the dopamine, and eventually start releasing it just to feel good. it's like saying that if you go to the gym everyday and lift 200 pounds you'll get high at the end of the week. eventually you'll start craving more and more of the weed, and you'll eventually stop going to the gym because you just want the feel good sensation
preventing abuse and addiction will require access control by the manufacturer, which raises questions about security and trust that we're still discussing
The underlying technology of wireheading behind this iPlant idea is one of very few ways to improve short-term mood while sidesteping the evolved negative feedback mechanisms of the brain that usually make you 'pay' for positive experiences induced by some drugs, for instance. I very much like the idea of using dopamine increase as payment for rewarding/beneficial behaviour, but I think it will be difficult to remove the possibility for all kinds of misuse through tempering.
I can see where you are coming from with this technology with regards to taking it in a positive direction. However I think that this science is far too dangerous, more so than every other science I have knowledge of to be allowed public. The massive risks of this technology is that it can lead to complete mind control. Anything can be hacked given time thus it wont be possible to make this hack proof. This technology can be used to control free will and should be banned now. I hope you fail.
Theoretically, one could use this device to totally modify one's personality and internal beliefs. A large part of personality is formed by emotional reaction to certain experiences. If you could modify the emotional reaction (pleasant) to certain stimuli (duck sex, religious cult ideas) then that person starts to enjoy these experiences, and incorporates it into vis personhood.
If one were to be implanted with iPlant, what's to stop the user from becoming a "wirehead"? The control of the device would either need to be autonomous or controlled externally by a different agent.
Don't you think it's a bit naive to think that there wouldn't be a hack available that one could simply download from the net. Think of the hackers who spend A LOT of time to break the most recent types of encrypting algorithms. And for what reward? For fame, such a tiny reward compared to even something like heroin and we know wireheading could potentially be a lot more rewarding.
Security is a really important issue and access control by the manefacturer will have to be extremely robust, but remember that the implant lies within the user's own head - tampering with it would mean risking not only your volition but also your life.
iPlant would be ideal for people with depression and ADD. I would use an iPlant if it were available, but would it ever be legalised for use in healthy minds? I think there would be a lot of resistance from society.
Omg... Deus Ex: Human Revolution has become reality. This is the beginning of human augmentation! Awesome!

If it is set to encourage me to do the things I myself want, then "take effort out of the equation" is all I need to hear. I'd kill for one of these.

Control of the device would be by a computer program, which needs to be extremely difficult to hack to prevent wireheading.
