This is kewl! I remember seeing this in the late 80's in NY and thoroughly enjoying. I think I saw the Desiree cast, but since I saw it about 6 times over a 3-year span (always bringing someone new to introduce to this impactful show), I can't recall. D'atra Hicks, the new minister of music, father (rev) and Sister Carry are the ones I remember best. I think D'atra added more "grit" and soul to the vocals than Desiree -as much as I enjoyed Desiree. Thanks for posting... GREAT memories!

I went to see this show in NYC when she was just a teenager. Wow! she was phenomenal> She also came to my high school in Plainfield New Jersey and performed with her church choir. I kept that tape and played it until it tore up. She is an awesome talent. I have often wondered why we havent heard more from her

i hope yall know that the movie is different than the play,, amara is an r&b singer already and in the beginnig of the movie she is performing at an awards show sing the kind of song she sings in real life and he mother is some kind of doctor and she still doesn't like her singing "that kind of music" she wanted her to sing gospel and the movie is i believe most of a flashback to when her father dies and how she got her career started

So this play at the Beacon Theater in NYC, came back 9 times after that and brought everybody I could. Paid for 3 bus trips from the Stapleton Projects in Staten Island, to bring the young people.
