TruthNotMedia, I will explain the Swedish reaction to you if you agree to listen. I will explain Aftonbladet, the idea behind Freedom of Press, as well as the role of Swedish government. Aftonbladet is a tabloid. It sell on "sensationalist news" that is often made up from scratch. The paper write about ghosts, UFO Sightings and alternative medicine, usually with no critical examination at all. It prints whatever article that can sell more, and do so in large fonts and controversial headlines.

Sweden have a schoolsystem that relies heavily on critical thinking. Our Freedom of Press/Speech relies on each individual to make up their own judgement what to believe and not. Aftonbladets customers is almost exclusively people of below average education. The paper is not taken seriously by well educated, which includes politicians. We who have average to above-average eduation take censorship as an insult to our intellect, we can decide by ourselves what's crap and not.

The Swedish reaction which you might have missed, was that almost every REAL newspaper made Aftonbladet into fools of the day, for printing yet another unverified crap article. Aftonbladets reputation thus, took a serious hit. That's one of the key points with freedom of speech, you are encouraged to speak, but if you speak like an idiot it will ruin your reputation.

Now the problem with the Israeli reaction. The problem there is that it didn't react according to what one would expect from a western democracy. In fact, it reacted like someone who didn't understand the western system at all. One should be able to demand more from high officials, than to not verify what kind of newspaper Aftonbladet is. When an Israeli diplomat misrepresent a tabloid as the general opinion of Sweden, that's an insult to every Swede with a good education.

Furthermore, asking "Sweden" (the people/the government) to apologize for a tabloid newspaper, or even break it's core principles, then it's little more than an insult. It doesn't speak of levelheaded rationalism to make a tabloid article into a diplomatic affair, it's childish and an insult to Swedish intellect to suggest that Aftonbladets article have anything to do with the governments position, or the position of the well educated.

Maybe it was a bad decision to publish this article but then it is the newspaper you have to critisize not turn into an government issue. We have the freedom of speech and anybody are allowed to disagree or agree but stop things from being published or let the swedish state be responsible for clumsy acts from our papers is wrong and a real threath to democracy. I'll simplify this for you: Israel only asked the Swedish foreign minister to follow the Swedish ambassador to Israel and distance itself from such accusations. Since he refused he in fact supported the lies as far as Israel is concerned and so logic dictates him being antisemitic. The problem is, he hides behind a facade of "liberalism" and we're sick of that.

Insulting muslims isn't illegal, blood libel falls under "incitement against minority" and can lead to 2 years in prison.
The Aftonbladet article wasn't blood libel, anyone familiar with blood libel who have read the article can agree with that.
The cartoons weren't an insult against muslims either.
Both events were examples of certain groups attacking freedom of speech that is protected by the Swedish constitution. The difference is that the latter was dangerous to national security.

The article deals with neither the Jewish race, people or religion. Besides, any Swede knows that Aftonbladet is a tabloid that prints anything to sell more papers. I wouldn't even call it a "newspaper". People here don't take that paper seriously, and definitely not the government. The history of Swedish nationalism, racism or antisemitism can of course be discussed, and if there are strong traces of a conscious antisemitic movement within Sweden. Personally, I can only point out that Swedish is one of the only countries in the world, in which antisemitism is illegal, and can lead to up to 2 years in prison. I find that to be an official statement on Swedens position, if any.
But we do not call something Blood Libel or antisemitic if it cannot be proven to be.

Antisemitism is an enemity against Jews as a population. Israel is a country, the Israeli government is the official authority over that country, but neither represents the Jews as a people. If someone tells me that the Swedish government is corrupt, I wouldn't see that as an attack upon Sweden or the Swedish people, because whenever a government fails to do their job, we replace them with another through the democratic process. Our government is not us.

The Swedish government is currently ran by the Moderates, the swedish center-right-wing party. Aftonbladet loathes the current government like the plague and would love for anyone to boycott them. As far as I know, no Swedish newpaper printed the Mohammed cartoons. It was a Danish paper that printed them. No one should apoligize for the cartoons as they were not lying. The article in Aftonbladet links the claims of organ theft from 20 years ago to the case of a Jewish American involved in illigal organ dealing in the presdent day. The article connects the two as part of some "Jewish plot". THAT is a lie. The two things have no connection. The paper is constructing an antisemitic lie.

Deah99, the belief that you can actually reason or talk with Israel about this, and ask them to understand the Swedish constitution is a sign of respect.
That level of respect wasn't given to the extremists who burned down embassy's and murdered people over cartoons. In that case it was all about protecting national security, which have a higher priority than using freedom of speech as a principle.
Regarding Aftonbladet, you will probably not find an intellectual Swede taking them seriously.

On Aftonbladet, I do not believe they are as bright as you want to make them. Most likely they printed the article without verifying it's sources. The one who provided them with the information might have been antisemitic, but the people working on Aftonbladet are just stupid.

One of the foundations of laws in the western world is that a suspect is innocent until proven guilty. The burden of proof is upon the newspaper and since they published an article with no proof by their own admission, it's just another Arab lie, one of many they made.
