  • Why are you hating on oksana. i watched this the day it actually happened. She won that day because she nailed all of her jumps. Because the artistry surpass all of the other women. Anybody can jump. Not everybody can make you feel something. She did that whenever she skated. She actually made me cry sometimes when she skated. How many skaters can you say that about!

  • @topsyturvy06 Not to mention Surya's jumps and in-between skating were flawed technically. I recall a sportswriter saying Bonaly 'looks like she skates on double runners between jumps' and he was completely right. Surya had no edge skills and as Scott pointed out she would 'stop, brake, then go into the jump'. She telegraphed, etc. not to mention her artistry was lacking compared to many of the other top skaters.

  • Why do you guys think that Oksana was over scored so often? Two theories have emerged: 1) The orphan story was a great sympathy factor, and/or 2) Former Soviet countries simply favored her due to bias.

I'm not sure. I did feel that her artistry was exceptional in terms of creativity and musicality, but I felt she was always over marked in terms of technical mark.

  • @mlc2005 I think it came down to this. The field was looking for a new leader after Yamaguchi and Ito retired, and Harding was already wasting away her talent as a big fatso and looked finished at the top. Kerrigan was the obvious heir but was erratic and not skating that well this season. Chen was kind of the overlooked contender and came from a then weak federation. That left only Bonaly who the judges never warmed up to. So almost by default Baiul arrived and was pushed hard to the top.

  • bonaly was robbed! the commentators are so biased against bonaly which leads me to think the judges where.... traditionalists who dulled skating down!

  • im sorry but surya skated mostly on two feet and just jumped. you can't compare.

  • @koolaidnhemlock Well put. Like I said in my other post - double runners. That's what she looked like what Surya was skating on. No quality of edge to speak of. She could do the jumps because she was an athlete, nothing more.

  • oksana i miss your face in the news! i wish she comes out once in awhile....where are the papparazzi's when you want their photo's....

  • It's funny how the commentators, ex-skaters who should have known better, were so happy when she landed a single jump. At this time, women were landing REQUIRED combination jumps Also, Oksana traveled while spinning. Imagine a male skater's "eyes and hands" diverting judges!

  • comparing to this all the jumps and perfect technique of Vancouver was just BORING

  • surya BONALY était bien meilleure que Bail et aurait du remporter la médaille d'OR !!!!

  • Bonaly was all technique/

  • I tend to prefer those that are good dancers and that are supple and fluid, but Baiul's performance here is frothy, excessivley cutesy and lacking substance. Not a Bonaly fan but she (or Chen) should have won here.

Get past all of the hype ("You can't keep your eyes off her hands and her eyes") and she just doesn't do nearly enough to deserve to win and even applauds herself.

  • Agreed. Baiul was seriously overrated.

  • I love Oksana-but apparently jump combos weren't a premium back then. Sandra doesn't make any reference to her lack of them other than the tech score won't be 'too high' because of the lack of jump combinations.

  • She does actually do a rather wonky looking jump combo (2footed) at 4:10 similar to the Olympics.

  • anyone know where i can find the version of "the rain in spain" that opened this performance?

  • It sounds like it's from a broadway version.

  • Hey Oksana, Surya just called...SHE WANTS HER GOLD MEDAL BACK!!!

    >;-)

  • Hear, hear! Surya rocked the 93 Worlds. Of course those judges would never give the world title to someone like her right before Olympics.

  • Oksana called back-she said Surya can't have it until she learns to SKATE on other than the flat of her blades. :-b

  • Surya thought every gold medal should've gone to her. Including the men's.

  • @NYCBlonde

    love your comment;)

  • i can skate naked

  • She's a star!

  • I didn't see any spin combinations. None of the triples were in combination. The footwork was negligible. a bunch of posing, arm movement, and stopping yet again for more posing.

    Grand theft gold medal.

  • Skating has to be a lot more technical and difficult now than it used to be back then.

  • True-and it didn't hurt that she was Eastern European, and rather cute to boot. Surya had the jumps-but her in between 'skating' was appalling compared to everyone else imo.

  • '5.8 and 5.6' I meant to say. Her artistic marks are what really gave her the edge and those WERE deserved. There was just something magical/enchanting about Oksana and Bonaly did not stand a chance in the artistic component.

  • WHAT JUMP does she make at "4:11" right before double axel?

  • It was a Loop. She went into it forward instead of backwards. You jump right as your turning on the pick to go onto your backwards outside edge. She did it really strangly though... her left leg was already in the air before she turned her right foot around... I have no idea how she did that.

  • it's not a loop fool, it's called an inside axel because you take off forward from an inside edge and rotate one and a half times...it's very rarely done anymore

  • Are you kidding me!? You actually need to verbally insult me when I didn't even insult anyone else? I made a guess at her jump b/c I have never anyone do that jump. You don't know me or anyone else who commented on this video, and if you did, you still don't have the right to start insulting people.

  • I think Jill Trenary did one too-an inside axel or similar in a jump combo.

  • Comment removed

  • an inside axel

  • Thank YOU ALL !

  • This girl peaked here and only one year, year of 1993.

  • the music combo is great...sound of music...west side story..and a little bit of my fair lady...sounded almost like the same song

  • which, of course, is a good thing :)

  • I think she did a good job here, but I think Chen or Bonaly won this event, really. And Kerrigan won gold at the Olympics. Baiul was cute, but that's it. Too much posing and small choreography in the center of the ice, jumps at the sides, and no combo. But that's not the main point. I think Baiul actually regressed the next year at Olympics. She performed this much better here in 1993. It would have been wise for her to have a new LP for Olympics '94. 90s-02 skating was great but corrupt.

  • I guess being a drunken orphan can win you medals lol.

  • I would have given Oksana a 5.5/5.8, Bonaly a 5.9/5.6, and Lu Chen a 5.7/5.8 . Chen was the winner of the LP at this World Championships, for me.

  • Oksana seems to enjoy herself the most when she skates to 'One' from 'A Chorus Line'.

I had never seen this pre-Olympic performance by Oksana Baiul until now; so thanks for posting this video.

  • Oksana won over Surya in a 6/3 split of first place ordinals. She probably won tie breakers based on the artistic mark. But I don't think some judges ever saw Surya as a legitimate figure skater, and were probably never going to give her a world title because of it.

  • I think you are right-Surya was always getting dinged due to the technical issues in her skating-she telegraphed jumps, 'stop break turn then jump' as Scott Hamilton pointed out a few times, poor edging, etc. and it seems clear international judges panel were never going to make her World or Olympic Champion over more complete skaters like Yuka-or more aesthetically pleasing skaters like Baiul. Surya was actually fortunate to compete post-compulsory figures era like Midori Ito.

  • No way in hell this should've beaten Surya's performance.

  • I just watched this again as well as Surya Bonaly's performance that year. I really think Surya should have won. Oksana had no combinations - Surya had three. Oksana had at least three jumps with iffy landings. Surya skated absolutely cleanly - amazing technicality. Although I prefer Oksana's style of skating, Surya was clearly the better skater that night. I'm not sure why the judges here or at the 1994 Olympics only seemed to care about style - difficult jumps seemed to be meaningless.

  • afterall this is figure skating, not ballet.

  • I agree totally. I love Oksana but Surya was the winner here. Lu Chen should have been silver too. I think bronze was a tossup between Baiul and Sato perhaps. Baiul deserved 2nd in the SP but probably only about 5th in the LP.

  • Oksana's performance was great, as was her choreography. She is skating to Broadway show tunes, and actually looks like a Broadway show girl dancing on ice. She makes this look effortless. Sandra Bezic, the commentator and world-renowned choreographer, states that Oksana "skates with her whole body and most importantly her heart." Oksana's ability to capture the essence of a broadway show girl on ice is likely why she received the marks she did. She deserved the gold medal.

  • If she had skated this well at the 1994 Olympics, I doubt that there would have been any heated debate about who should have won in 1994. Her performance was much cleaner than in Norway a year or so later, and her artistry was amazing. She has such beautiful arms. I don't know why she dumped this pretty blue dress for the hideous pink featured mess at the Olympics. Much more suitable for a show girl - which she really is.

  • surya shoudlve won osakana was horrible

  • I believe the commentator on 1993 NBC clip is Sandra Bezic, world-renowned choreographer. Sandra continuously comments very positively on Oksana's performance throughout. At the end, she states "what a performance! She just knocked off every triple jump there is!" I am unsure why there so many negative comments on here about this performance when a skating expert is clearly blown away. Oksana landed 5 clean triples. Her technical marks were appropriate as were her (higher) impression marks.

  • I have to agree with you. Surya was simply amazing that night. Oksana was terrifically emotional - but she did have a couple of minor errors. Poor Surya never got the respect she deserved.

  • A very poor performance and a very simple choreography from Oksana.

Bonaly and Chen were skating in a totally different league than horrible Oksana in that competition. Unfortunately, the judging in that competition was even worse than Oksana's program.

  • A very good performance from her. She deserves her gold. Surya had the jumps. Oksana Baiul had the jumps SOMEWHAT -- hey, she landed a very nice Lutz, but between the jumps her movements were great and inspired... while Surya's seem stilted and unconvincing. She never feels her music. That's part of the sport -- to make the audience convinced of your movements.

  • A really nice performance from Oksana. She certainly skated to her ability. To me, the silver-medal performance. Lu Chen delivered quality, mature, and artistically/technically superior short and long programs.. her getting bronze is ludicrous.

  • So she used the same LP for 93 and 94 seasons. Isn't that what Sale and Pelletier were criticized on in 2002 when they used an old LP at the Olympics?

  • bonaly was better at that time

  • Not even close...

  • Bonaly has a lot of technical flaws, but on that night I think she had the best freeskate.

Oksana= No jump combination, several shaky landings. No real combination spin with more than two positions, not to mention no change of foot. No real step sequence. I also find it annoying that she constantly returns to center ice to "dance" in between the tricks.

from me: Bonaly 5.8/5.7 Baiul 5.4/5.7

  • Not even that Bonaly 5.9, 5.7 Bauil 5.3/5.6 Lu Chen 5.8, 5.9

  • It's very horrible...

  • huh? she did 5 triples.

  • and those five triples were all different. i would have given her an extra .2 just for having an aray of jumps!

  • bonaly did seven triples including two lutzes and two toe-loops along with all the other triples except the axel. oksana double footed her triple toe, badly cheated her loop, and had a really funky axel at the end. technically its no matchup, bonaly was better

  • That's dumb. She didn't do any of them in combination and she didn't land a clean double axel here either.

  • Oksana is a stupid person and a very bad ice skater. Surya Bonaly is clearly better than her! No doubt abour it. Shame on the judges!

  • Ah....you need to open your eyes...you must be watching with them shut! There is no other skater who has the grace and artistry that Oksana has. She has had her problems..but hey..walk a mile in her shoes...she has not had the best childhood and I don't think that people can understand that who hasn't lived through it. Surya has the technical jumps...but that is it...she does not have grace on the ice...sorry.

  • BS! People seem to forget that Surya had a bad childhood to she was abanded by her parents. This program didn't deserve the gold at all not even the silver medal.

  • There is no other skater that has the gracefulness and passion like Oksana. Surya has the jumps...but they are not pleasant to watch....Oksana won....plain and simple...she was the best of her time.

  • Please even Yuka SAto was better then Oksana

  • Yuka Sato....LOL....that is hilarious....I will respond after I pick myself up off the floor from laughter...Yuka Sato....that is sooo funny.

  • Oksana didn't have any grace or nothing u call breaks in the program and posing every 30 secs a good skater then you don't know shit about skating.

  • It sounds like that maybe it is YOU who doesn't know anything about skating.....or how to speak correctly.....what a loser!

  • Looks over their careers Oksana use the same free skating with the pitful attempt for so called artisty. When Yuka Sato had the grace and the totally package

  • Your sentence doesn't even make sense...lol....Nobody and I mean NOBODY has the grace and artistry that Oksana had......

  • Her technical marks were ridiculous. She would have deserved only a 5.6 for a clean program and with the little errors she made on the double axels, this should have been getting 5.5's.

The presentation was strong but not superior to Lu Chen, who was also better technically and most definitely should have won the Gold Medal.

  • Exactly! Funny how the big rivalry was between Baiul and Bonaly when the best performance of the night was indeed Lu Chen's! Just like the Olympics! No one can come even close to Lu's artistry, of course!

  • there is no way under the new judging system , that this performance would have beaten surya's

  • she is vulgar and ridiculous , but to winn this is what they need .

  • surya is the best

  • surya is the best

  • technically weak

    artistically AWESOME !!!

  • shame!

  • She skated better at the Olympics. Here she seems a bit slow and less fluid.

  • to me she won the title because she was able to do every jump in the book well and had very original and creative artistry. One paper other skaters out jumped her, but no one matched her speed and presentation

  • you blind i think ,she made mistakes on the jups , look better please

  • I agree...

  • I think the reason why she won this title is because the judges had never seen anything like her.

  • yes they never seen make so many bad double axel . we sow in the future what she is , allwais double footed jumps . americans bouhgt her story , the movie was ready before her 'victory' all corrupted

  • This American didn't. I thought Surya should have won the World's that year and Nancy Kerrigan should have won the Olympic gold medal. Props to Oksana for all she overcame - but remember, Surya and Nancy had obstacles, too.
