I totally understand the fact that the body is being floated in a holy river. I have no problems with the religious practices of the Hindus. What I don't understand is how they think it is safe to drink from the same river that they defecate into, wash in, and bury their dead. The rate of infection must be astronomical.
The Ganga is pure no matter what is put into it. This is something which perhaps you have to experience for yourself, but drinking Ganga water is completely safe. I was born and raised in America, and in my recent trip to India, I spend a week walking through Navadvip, which is right next to the Ganga. My only water was from the river, and I didn't get sick. Alternatively, when I did drink one mere sip of tap water, I got very sick within a couple hours.
It is easy to mock what you do not understand. This body is on its last journey. This is part of their religion, no one expects you to practice it. We live in a different reality than these people do. It is a matter of perspective. The Ganges River is a conduit of life to them. I worry for their health for doing this, but not their spirits... the intention is one of goodness.

I was serching the web for the Ganges river because a colleague had told me stories. I'm sure there are plenty of things that are "amazing" about India. However, the images of this river and the government which pollutes this waterway is horrendous, I've found. I've only watched a few hours of video and don't know everything there is to know about the river, but I think it is sad that so many people have to rely on such a polluted river.

You couldnt get me to even swim in that river. It surprises me that this "holy" river is used as a burial place, a bathing/cleaning place, source of food, and a religious site (I thought I heard that the river has special Hindu powers but I may be wrong). Plus unlike the description I dont think these kids were playing with the corpse. I think they are getting the body back into the current so it can continue its journey down the river.

I totally understand the fact that the body is being floated in a holy river. I have no problems with the religious practices of the Hindus. What I don't understand is how they think it is safe to drink from the same river that they defecate into, wash in, and bury their dead. The rate of infection must be astronomical.

The Ganga is pure no matter what is put into it. This is something which perhaps you have to experience for yourself, but drinking Ganga water is completely safe. I was born and raised in America, and in my recent trip to India, I spend a week walking through Navadvip, which is right next to the Ganga. My only water was from the river, and I didn't get sick. Alternatively, when I did drink one mere sip of tap water, I got very sick within a couple hours.

It is easy to mock what you do not understand. This body is on its last journey. This is part of their religion, no one expects you to practice it. I was serching the web for the Ganges river because a colleague had told me stories. I'm sure there are plenty of things that are "amazing" about India. However, the images of this river and the government which pollutes this waterway is horrendous, I've found. I've only watched a few hours of video and don't know everything there is to know about the river, but I think it is sad that so many people have to rely on such a polluted river.

You couldnt get me to even swim in that river. It surprises me that this "holy" river is used as a burial place, a bathing/cleaning place, source of food, and a religious site (I thought I heard that the river has special Hindu powers but I may be wrong). Plus unlike the description I dont think these kids were playing with the corpse. I think they are getting the body back into the current so it can continue its journey down the river.

That's because they are really highly educated as well - more educated than Americans, perhaps, if Americans can't supply all their own doctors. And -ALL of India was controlled by the British. It won't matter soon, as India has almost the fastest growing economy in the world, at an average of over 8% (The US average is a bit over 2%) India has problems to overcome (just as the US sure does) but with a billion people it takes some time.

The world needs to do something to clean up that river, I'm not questioning their beliefs that the river will clean them of their sins but we all need to do something and stop dumping sewage and waste into their sacred river.
