  • there was a kid that went to my school called cody kant

  • @Kaptainkompost, that is a great handle. If you're still here, bump

  • Kant like??? ermm???

    you fat KANT!!!!

  • @benmc987 lol... xD yeah... I'm still embarrassed that this video is my "claim to fame"

  • kant like cunt =D

  • Yeah...it's not pronounced like that in german. Your last shout was probably closest because you pronounced it like "can't ". But it's more like bank as the guy said. Imagine i say cat. Now put an n in between the a and t and keep the pronunciation of cat.

  • @GeorgefromLeeds thanks for the tips. I'm terribly embarrassed that this is my most watched video xD I did this for a friends benefit and I've been coached on my own pernoucation , which I do appreciate.

  • IT IS NOT PRONOUNCED KUNT.

    More like kont.

  • @Roniquis so I heard. thank you for the correction :)

  • @kaptainkompost

    thanks for the clarification! :D

  • But on the last time you said can't

Is that some sort of tapestry in the background? It is quite a lovely sort of spring green. I'm replying to this video because I am putting off writing a paper. Sometimes just random youtube comments sort of help get the juices flowing know what I mean? Well anyway I'm sure it is annoying when you know the right pronunciation of something and then keep hearing it wrong k thnx bye

  • @rosetintworld

I noticed that too. but I kept to see if anyone would say anything.. you are observant. you officially win a pat on the back ;)

anyway it is a tapestry. I bought it at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire.it's of "the tree of life" a rather popular celtic symbol.

    thanks for the comment.

  • thank you good sir. not much for philosophy but i also need people to pronounce words accurately

  • @DanBestMusic

    You are very welcome.

  • If you care about pronouncing his surname correctly, how come you don't care about the correct pronounciation of his first name? Include that in the video and it becomes perfect :P

  • @EsWe1990

I was not aware that I mispronounced anything there are a few separate accepted pronunciations as far as I am aware. if it is said differently in German, please enlighten me. I don't mind being told I'm wrong. it's how we learn. please note that the below sound file is done under an alternate spelling of the name.

  • @KDPhilosophy The pronounciations from the page you posted are the English pronounciations of the name. Now, since that is your native tongue and you will most probably use it in conversation with other English speakers, that is very fine.

The correct German pronounciation is different though. In the very beginning of the video found under the name >>Immanuel Kant (1/3) - "Was heisst: Sich im Denken orientieren?"<< you can hear a German saying "Immanuel Kant".

  • @EsWe1990 The main difference is the letter "a".

  • @EsWe1990

    post a sound file. I'm interested. ^_^

  • @KDPhilosophy Can't you find the video I was talking about in the first part of my comment? (curse youtube for the word limit in posts :P)

  • @EsWe1990

oh I didn't put that together. sure I'll find it.

  • I'm German, perfect pronounciation. just like cunt, Kant! ;) I don't know how english pronounce the name .. kent? dont know^^

  • @NKDuisburg02 in English it's usually said "kant" (like can't) or "kahnt"

  • @NKDuisburg02

thanks for your input. silly though this may be ^_^' lol

  • I disagree. Nearly all words in the English language including proper nouns have been appropriated from other languages. Even when the original spellings are preserved, they're adapted to fit the phonetic conventions and sensibilities of English. For example, we do no pronounce Chinese names with the original tonal inflection nor do we roll our R's when we pronounce Spanish names. In English, "Kant" rhymes with "want".

  • @hasatum

both are accepted. however according to the German soundfiles I've found the pronouncement I'm talking about here is more common. however I understand why people choose to pronounce it as "Kant" due to the...well. awkwardness

I however feel it's more proper to pronounce it as closely to the German way as possible.. but this is a personal choice despite the rather inappropriate mockery of this video. it was done in jest. But I agree. a when a name changes languages it can change.

  • @KDPhilosophy I don't have a problem with those who prefer to use original pronunciations, especially when it is a part of academic discourse, but I'm glad to hear that you don't look down on those who prefer the adapted pronunciation. I currently live in Japan and I've had to come to accept a pretty mangle pronunciation of my own name. I appreciate those who try to use my real name when they're speaking English, but it sticks out weirdly when they're using Japanese.

  • @hasatum

and I understand that. I guess holding onto the original punctuation is my own way of honoring the philosopher. though in reality I bet Kant would care very little. I just feel it's the best way to go about things,

    ^_^

  • OMG REALLY!!??? Is that really how you pernounce it???? I've always thought it was pernounced KHAAANT... Prof. Dixon n Preston always say KHAAAANT....lmao....ohhhhh wow....Wonder if they know..

  • @ezrilileonce they do. I've talked to Preston about it, apparently he thinks it's for the best he pronounces it differently.

  • @KDPhilosophy Of course he does...I figured. I Agree, it is best that they pronounce it as they have been....Female students appreciate it I'm sure...

  • @ezrilileonce in my mind one should not be offended my the pronunciation that's just how it sounds. but if the awkwardness is distracting I guess I can understand.

all the same I personally prefer the correct sound to be used. for the sake of accuracy and honoring the philosopher as well as we can.

I think giving credence to the problem that people giggle when his name is said rather then pressing onward accents the problem.

  • Comment removed

  • @KDPhilosophy I thought about that...And you're right...It would not offend me if the professors pronounced Kant's name properly, and as far as accuracy, and honoring his name...You are right, and avoiding the giggles, only perpetuates the issue, but...I'd DEFINATELY feel awkward when making eye contact w/my male professors as they pronounce 'Kant' Properly...I mean Out of ALL the things, it has to sound like ....cunt....good, real good....

  • @ezrilileonce we should just count our blessings that young Kant didn't go to a contemporary american middle-school...

  • @KDPhilosophy LMFAO YES!...Kelly, Your sense of humor NEVER fails to crack me up! Too funny...

  • @ezrilileonce glad you approve. ;) *hugs*

  • hahahaha HAHAHAH hahahah AHHHAHAHH!!!!!!!!

wow i thought the 3min philo vid was joking!! LMAO!!!

  • @philomypillow

nope :3 and I'm expecting a video response.

  • @philomypillow
