If I was a Locomotive Engineer, I'd lay on the horn as well. Dumb cars wanna speed through crossings and cause accidents. It'll let them know who is really in charge.
@gaycowboy31 they have the ic&e now too i think they come all the way to sioux city iowa seen a few dash 9's on the bnsf line headed into town and going across the misouri as well
idk but i know ive seen some cn trains and a few locos from a railroad i have never seen before. just too bad i dont have the sony webbie right now my sister borrowed it and now i cant film all the cool trains that go by here. just a few days ago i saw some wierd lead locos on the bnsf from some railroad ive never seen then the day after there was a switcher on a flatbed truck that went under the bnsf bridge. looked like a narrow gauge one had a wierd muffler on it.
@DeltaPhi79: The horn here is a K-3H. One clue is that the name of a Nathan or Leslie horn denotes the horn's number of bells (and thus the number of notes). Also, I really like the E2-B1 as well. I wish there were some in service.
I honestly can never tell the different between the K-(insert numbers and letters here) horns. Usually not with the others either. And I only know of one E2-B1 that is (or WAS) in service. m3ohwell has a video of one. I think the title was "Rare Westinghouse Horn".
@DeltaPhi79: I didn't understand either, but looking into it usually does the trick. About m3ohwell's video: believe it or not, that E2-B1 is actually his own, not the railroad's; he had it placed on the locomotive so he could film the train using it.
HELL YEAH!! Thats the only way you can be sure....well hope your sure no one is going to get in your way....got to make certain they hear you coming! I hate the thought of quiet zones....you hit someone and the get killed then they sue the RR cuz you didnt blow the horn.....whats up with that?! Great catch btw!
Ah what a sweet sound. Like music to my ears, when I hear one rolling down the tracks by the house I like to go outside and listen to them until I can't hear them any more.
Boy if no one heard that horn at crossin then they just deaf...and i like the old poles left run down beside tracks many many years that use be power n stuff before change over n remove them
I stand corrected. It doesn't sound like the GEVO.....still nice though. I think NS used some of those horns though. Grand Trunk used to run through Lima, Ohio on the old Detroit Toledo & Ironton RR!!! I'll get one for my model train set someday. Thanks for the Freeport footage.
Haha if I was the conductor I`d turn to the engineer and be like "OK OK OK THEY FRIKIN GET IT!!!! TRAIN COMING, STOP, THEY GET IT lol thats not a Nathan P5 is it? sounds a little different
no. it sounds different because its canadian tuned. probably a K3H, but im american and not good with canadian horns. the nathan horns that have A on the end of their names mean they are american tuned. K5L would be canadian tuned as opposed to an american K5LA and so forth.
Great horn and video! One of the things I love best about watching freight trains is the funky old buildings that are often trackside. They add to the atmosphere and this one is really industrial-looking. Nice.
lol yeah probably. A little bit of interesting history on that factory: after the knocked the building down, they were digging to buid a new park there, and found tons of batteries burried in the dirt. It's also possible that they dumped waste into the river that is just behind me in this shot. No problem, and thanks for the nice comment/rating!
its different depending on govt. legislation or depending on what the railroad decides to do. i know in the west they want the bells ringing at all times but here on the east coast our crossing bells shut off once theyre all the way down
ya, Isn't amazing how far they echo? I live 5km away from a crossing in a large city, and yet, every morning, i still hear it! It sounds so amazing!!!
if ya look at my waubaman lake video(taken at the crossing i started watching trains) you can hear the trains there every 20 minutes just giving at the horn.
-A local that goes just East to Rockford on Mon, Wed, & Fri. Leaves in the late AM comes Back early-mid PM
The same local that goes West to Lena, and sometimes just east of Freeport on Tue, Thurs, Sat, local does not work Sun. Usually leaves late AM gets back early PM
the horns remind me of some of the horns you hear on the Norfolk Southern's. Sometimes when I'm stopped at tracks when a train is coming by, and its a NS, the horn sends chills down my back because its cool to hear it.
I do believe that horn is a K5H. That is the government regulated air chime configuration of Candaian engines. Something to do with a scientific study of pitch and sufficiently audible decible levels to provide sufficient warning to cars.
Several NYS&W B40-8's had them by happenchance, but 20 of them were returned to CSX and are numbered in the 5300 or 5400 series; the other 4 are now on the P&W as PW 4001-4004.
Lots of horn! Love it, but no way, Conrail SD50's have the best horns. 142 cars like this is probably no more than 9,000 feet, average for todays standards. The longest I have ever seen was 12,841 feet in length (2.43 miles), 138 automotive cars.
Thanks for your interest! There are two road freights, M338 which comes between 7p.m. and 10 p.m. and M337 which comes between 4 and 7 am. Then there is a local that works every day but Sunday.
Can someone say CANADIAN POWER-SHOT with the HORN????
Probably not enough trains per day for the city to raise a stink about the downtown Horns. After all, for a while back in the 90s, when the horn wasn't as often as it is now, there were a number of Car vs Train hits. Nowadays it's not as bad. still though, those Chicago Centrals with smashed up GRAB IRONS!
The engineers in Freeport seem to love to blast those horns!!!!

Very nice. I wish that they would use more horn here in Newark Ohio...
railroadfaninohio 2 months ago
only reason the horn stopped was because there want any more air in the compressors.
southern4501isawesom 5 months ago
I think the engineer needs to lay on the horn longer for the next crossing 2 miles away. I don't think everyone in a 5 mile radius heard it!
