it depends entirely on your profession. some places you work will have legacy systems written entirely in perl so you have to support it. a lot of small companies today have or are moving to ruby, python or php, and the big enterprise level jobs usually deal with asp or java or something. so personally i have seen literally no perl professionally since i was in college and it does seem to be disappearing. but its still worth learning just if you are curious

What advantage does Perl have in 2011? It use to be the go to language for text manipulation, but Python has largely supplanted it for that with my generation of programmers. So I ask what is the future of Perl, what advantages do it still hold over other languages?
