it depends entirely on your profession. some places you work will have legacy systems written entirely in perl so you have to support it. a lot of small companies today have or are moving to ruby, python or php, and the big enterprise level jobs usually deal with asp or java or something. so personally i have seen literally no perl professionally since i was in college and it does seem to be disappearing. but its still worth learning just if you are curious
there is really a part of me that wants to learn programming but when i stare at my computer doing programming i just go blank. might start pro gaming. lol
Bjarne Stroustrup's is the king, Larry Wall the wannabe ;-) Proof: Bjarne can listen to music while coding (well still assuming he is not coding in perl neither)
What advantage does Perl have in 2011? It use to be the go to language for text manipulation, but Python has largely supplanted it for that with my generation of programmers. So I ask what is the future of Perl, what advantages do it still hold over other languages?
I like this guy but for a moment I was like "Hm, do I _really_ want to learn how the developer of Perl, of all things, codes..." Haha. More of a Python guy myself, but I like Wall's idea of nonlinearity. :3
I could watch and listen to Larry Wall indefinitely. The gift this man has given to the world is pretty incalculable. Like his charisma. To know what he knows ... wow. Thanks for this video.
Deprocrastinate. My new favorite word.

@LukaDawnhacker why?

@misterolichip Every piece of perl code I've seen so far looked hideous.
I may be a nice language but it sure is ugly.

Larry Wall is like the absolute poster child of the stereotypical old school programmer. IOW, he's my hero. :)

Forget the Open Source, we need Open Programmers. I think it will be addressed in GPLv4.

Larry is a great concepts guy, but having hacked on Perl5 internals I can definately say that I would not like to code like he does.

@interstellarwonder I think so too. I am a night owl, and I do a great deal of dreaming.

This dude sounds like a mental hoarder. It would not surprise me if he was not one in real life.
