Ali could have easily thrown another right hand on foremans head while he was going down but held back,Forman later on did mention this and said he was gratefull that Ali did not throw the right hand while he was going down.Magnificent Ali beat foreman in his prime, when foreman had easily demolished Frazier and Norton and was 40 fights 40wins 37 kos.
AND.. I NEVER HEAR GEORGE GIVE ALI HIS CREDIT ALL HE DOES IS BITCH ABOUT HOW HE WENT CRAZY WHEN HE LOST THE TITLE AND ALL THESE OTHER EXCUSES .. SMH ALI THE BEST EVERRRR
foreman at 42 would of murdered Ali in this fight, for 2 reasons
1) he wouldn't of been dumb enough to fight in the sweltering heat and humidity of Africa
2) he wouldn't of punched himself out
Not to mention the eyewitness accounts that Ali's trainers had loosened the ropes before the fight. Yeah before you respond, read up on it, you might learn something....
Foreman was a complete idiot to take the fight in Africa. A mistake he wouldn't of made @ 42. He would later make that mistake vs Young in P.Rico when he lost and nearly died of heat stroke by his accounts. Outdoor stadiums in hot/humid climates didn't favor Georges fighting style then, which is why Don King and Ali pushed 4 the fight in Zaire. Fact that there are eyewitnesses to Ali's camp loosening the ropes to aid the Rope-A-Dope should tell you how desperate a man Ali was.

@giamozz , George Foreman said of that......that was the best punch Ali NEVER THREW!! Great observation, because Foreman thanked Ali for not hitting him on the way down years later.
Ali never would give Foreman a rematch and who can blame him. Strange it was Foreman that won the HeavyWeight crown at age 45 again being the oldest man to ever do so. Well Done George!
@theskeptic2010@bluetimbre Thanks. I was aware of what the phantom punch was and where it came from...just saw many posts implying this was a phantom punch and was pointing out that it wasn't. The punches were clear to the chin and not hidden by the camera angle or had heads or limbs in the way.
Why's everyone talking about phantom punches? I saw two clean punches to the chin before Foreman started stumbling. Not to mention the 4-5 shots before that.
@Bonsai667 Mostly because the people commenting are easily distracted, and nobody has a clue what "Phantom Punch" means in relation to Muhammad Ali, and the second Liston fight. Also that none of those individuals seemed to catch the fact that the announcer said: "That Was "NO" Phantom Punch!" This is our future. Idiots with no comprehension, and a small ability to type and post unintelligently on Youtube. The sad part is,.. some have also figured out how to breed. "DOH!"!
@Bonsai667@Bonsai667 The "phantom punch" moniker comes from the second Ali-Liston fight in 1965 when people doubted Ali knocked out Liston with what looked (on TV) like a fake punch.
@Bonsai667 The announcer clearly said several times "That was NO phantom punch". People were still talking about the "phantom punch" in the second Ali-Liston fight, which you can actually see here on YouTube if you do a search for it
@cadetcagers10 Because Jackie Chan and Steven Segal went 15 rounds in an elimination bout to fight Larry Holmes in 1989. Unfortunately Jackie saw that Steven would be still be making action films after 2003 looking like he needed a crane to lift him for the fight scenes. So The title fight never happened. Who won the elimination bout? Ha ha, Who do you think? Jackie later did the Rush Hour films...Steve did Dinner mostly, and wore tent sized shirts in his films. (BURP! :)
Ali was not the same fighter after he came back to boxing when he won his appeal-He had not boxed for three and a half years-Imagine how even greater a fighter Ali would have been if he did not have his boxing license suspended and he had boxed those 3 years
@curtisjones400 my friend. if that had happened, Ali would not have been the great fighter we remember today. it is the fact that he stood up for his beliefs, refused to partake in a war he did not believe in, after a hard struggle got his license back, was humiliated by frazier with that late knock down then rose back to the top and knocked out George Foremen in 8, the same man that knocked down fraizer 6 times in 2 rounds, that made him great. His fall from grace, and rise to the the top again.
@sramcs They fought in Zaire because Don KIng did not have thr $5 million that he promised to pay the fighters -so he had to go outside of the united states to find a sponsor-The President of Zaire said his country would sponsor the fight because it would bring revenue to his country

@carmodifire remember when he knocked out liston, and no one could see it because of the speed as well as the camera angle? people thought that liston had taken a dive and called it the phantom punch.
@1234oldmate rematch would have certainly been interesting, either way I don't think Foreman would have beaten Ali in rematch unless he fought Ali when Ali was 37+. George Foreman himself said Ali was a tough match up for him due to his style, he said something like I COULD FACE ALI 20 TIMES AND HE WOULD STILL WHOP ME, HE HAD THE STYLE TO BEAT ME(might be a little off can't remember exactly). Also remember Ali fought him toe to toe in the first 2 rounds of their bout and outclassed Foreman.
@SadoKaden I don't think ali ever lost to the same opponent twice, he beat anyone who beat him. Only in the career of course, not like Holmes battle. Foreman was one of the best fighters ever though.

@SadoKaden hahahahaha its funny but back in the day chuck norris would own them both no jokes... check out the interview with chuck norris... he was an actual fighter where bruce lee was a great fighter but more of a movie star really
@jowrab Are you saying that George Foreman is ignorant? If anything, Foreman's a genius, simply because he became an extremely successful businessman after his days in the ring, unlike most, who end up, either
Wal-Mart greeters, or homeless bums...the fight was excruciatingly long, and the outcome could have gone either way...Ali just got lucky, with a simple strategy...
@GemCan78 you must have never fought before, there is no such thing as a lucky punch, considering Ali knocked him out, you want a lucky victory, how about seeing a fight where someone got their butt whupped throughout the match, but still won on points, lol, somebody got warm and cuddly with one of the judges, lol! but no, if someone gets knocked out, there is no such thing as a lucky punch, you either win or lose.
@kalai131 First off, I have fought countless times, though not in a boxing setting...and secondly, both fighters were dead tired, and it wouldn't have taken a rocket scientist to see, that, even the slightest "love tap", would have toppled either fighter...Ali's "rope a dope" strategy was a very intelligent one, because in all reality, he had virtually no chance of beating Foreman...
This fight proved Ali was in fact a genius inside the ring. He did not tell any one we was going to the ropes, letting Foreman come at him. Ali was always talking to Foreman in that fight, making sure he was angry enough to not figure out what was happening. Foreman trained specifically to beat Ali's superior speed and footwork neither of which Ali used in this fight.
This was not luck, this was not Foreman being stupid this was just the greatest of all time doing what he does.
Nobody as an Athlete sportsman has beaten Ali yet. He had the fame and he had the honor. Many have the fame but never the honor and class of Ali. As Ali said, if he was a garbage collector, he would have been the best garbage collector.
you ever hear of the rope a dope because mahamad was afraid and ran around the ring and made big george tired then went to punch george was tryin to get him the whole time but then mahamad ran around
Ali was just an outside fighter... he preferred dancing around, making his opponent wear themselves down, and picking the right time to strike over slugging it out.
people thought that george was gonna destroy ali because george crushed joe frazier even when ali failed is first attempt, but ali used his brains and new that george self control and kept taunting him until he was tired and when for the knockout.i thought people learned to never doubt ali when he pwnded sonny liston guess i thought wrong
people thought that george was gonna destroy ali like when they thought liston was gonna destroy him too, because george crushed joe even when ali could do that in his first attempt. But never doubt muhammed ali.
if you guys wanna see geore crush joe type in georege foreman crushes joe frazier and click on the first one
joe is my favourite boxer of all. but when i see george falling under alis hammering and think that george knocked joe 6 times down before wining .Im truly afraid that ali is the best of al time.
What a noble fighter Ali was! He could have easily hit Foreman again on the way down to ensure the knockout, but he didn't... Compare this to Mike Tyson.
@Noahyay It wasent a comback, it was the plan from the beggining. Have you seen Rocky III? same thing, the tactic is called Rope-a-Dope incase yah did not know. Wiki it.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD the phantom punch was a reference to Ali's rematch with Liston, in which it looked like Liston took a dive from a certain camera angle
Lol, I like how the guy says 'It's not a Phantom Punch." Obviously the brits thought as I do, that Liston took a dive in the 2nd Fight, and was hit by a Phantom Punch. But yes, the one that hit Foreman to end the night was no phantom punch.
@tftmc -- Not only was it not a phantom punch, it looks like it was a damn hard punch, perfectly delivered. You can see Ali really leaning into it from his feet.
@57highland Wait, which punch? The one that took down Foreman? That one looked like he was waiting for just the right moment for 8 rounds to throw that punch. What's odd is that the cards go to Ali in that fight.
@tftmc -- Yes, the straight right that snapped Foreman's head back; the last punch before he fell. Your right. It looked like Ali was just waiting for the perfect time to throw that right (which he leaned into, which came all the way from his feet). When you say the cards, do you mean that Ali was ahead at the time of the KO? Foreman's fans like to say, "Well, he beat the count." That didn't matter. If the ref let the fight go on, Foreman loses a lop-sided decision, at best.
@tftmc Ali caught Liston all right, and Liston got up (why do that if he dived?), the fight resumed and was then stopped. I'm pretty sure the guy talking here is David Frost who famously interviewed Nixon- mentioning the "phantom" punch doesn't mean he thought there had been one, only that some had claimed so, but here was another "unbeatable" monster Ali had seen off without any shadow of doubt.
@mizofan Well, I think Frost referred to it as the "so called 'Phantom Punch" because it's been so commonly referred to as that.
Really, it's hard to say, but Ali did have a sharp straight right, look at the Foreman fight and he was younger in the Liston fight, but personally I don't know, I lean towards it being a dive on Liston's part, I've heard too much weird things.
1st off Ali DID in fact hit Liston in the 1965 fight. In slow mo you can clearly see the punch hit the top of Liston's head by the temple area. Just not hard enough to knock Liston out.
2ndly Liston "dived" because HE WAS A COWARD! Liston knew Ali was going to beat him in 1965. Look how confident Ali was as he stood above him screaming his @ss off (lol). Liston was afraid. Liston just didn't want Ali to humiliate him.
@MrRebuttal I'll give you this, no matter what happened it boils down to this, either 1 of these 2 happened if he hit him. Ali landed a devastatingly accurate punch to Liston's head & was truly badly hurt, BUT I believe IF he did hit Liston as some believe (i'm not 100% either way) than Ali landed a good, solid punch that hurt Liston, but Liston did stay down for someone else's benefit other than Ali's.
Regardless I think Ali woulda won, Liston's chin wasn't solid & Ali was fresh & FAST
@BeachBum2OO7 if he got offered 5mill dollars like he did here of course he would've fought in africa again, money talks mate

@SadoKaden hahahahaha its funny but back in the day chuck norris would own them both no jokes... check out the interview with chuck norris... he was an actual fighter where bruce lee was a great fighter but more of a movie star really
treeboy83 10 months ago
@treeboy83 Well of course Chuck Norris wins, he counted to infinity twice!
SadoKaden 10 months ago
@jowrab Are you saying that George Foreman is ignorant? If anything, Foreman's a genius, simply because he became an extremely successful businessman after his days in the ring, unlike most, who end up, either
Wal-Mart greeters, or homeless bums...the fight was excruciatingly long, and the outcome could have gone either way...Ali just got lucky, with a simple strategy...
GemCan78 11 months ago
@GemCan78 you must have never fought before, there is no such thing as a lucky punch, considering Ali knocked him out, you want a lucky victory, how about seeing a fight where someone got their butt whupped throughout the match, but still won on points, lol, somebody got warm and cuddly with one of the judges, lol! but no, if someone gets knocked out, there is no such thing as a lucky punch, you either win or lose.
kalai131 11 months ago
@kalai131 First off, I have fought countless times, though not in a boxing setting...and secondly, both fighters were dead tired, and it wouldn't have taken a rocket scientist to see, that, even the slightest "love tap", would have toppled either fighter...Ali's "rope a dope" strategy was a very intelligent one, because in all reality, he had virtually no chance of beating Foreman...
GemCan78 11 months ago
@GemCan78 yea dats what they said about him fighting Liston and then look like what happend....
AliTheGOAT 11 months ago

MrHicksw 1 year ago
@MrHicksw he was not afraid u idiot, hes tactic was too get them tired and let their gaurd down
ExilimProductions 1 year ago
@MrHicksw
It's not that Ali was scared, far from it.
Ali was just an outside fighter... he preferred dancing around, making his opponent wear themselves down, and picking the right time to strike over slugging it out.

What a noble fighter Ali was! He could have easily hit Foreman again on the way down to ensure the knockout, but he didn't... Compare this to Mike Tyson.

Wtf does "phantom punch" mean? Like "fake punch?" No shit it was real you don't fall flat on your ass from air dumbass.
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 1 year ago
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD the phantom punch was a reference to Ali's rematch with Liston, in which it looked like Liston took a dive from a certain camera angle
drfell2907 1 year ago
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD there you go buddy watch?v=ZIY9T8zFjAI - shows the Ali v Liston 'Phantom Punch' (comes in after about 4 minutes)
blllllllllleugh 1 year ago
Lol, I like how the guy says 'It's not a Phantom Punch." Obviously the brits thought as I do, that Liston took a dive in the 2nd Fight, and was hit by a Phantom Punch. But yes, the one that hit Foreman to end the night was no phantom punch.
tftmc 1 year ago
@tftmc -- Not only was it not a phantom punch, it looks like it was a damn hard punch, perfectly delivered. You can see Ali really leaning into it from his feet.
57highland 1 year ago
@57highland Wait, which punch? The one that took down Foreman? That one looked like he was waiting for just the right moment for 8 rounds to throw that punch. What's odd is that the cards go to Ali in that fight.
tftmc 1 year ago
@tftmc -- Yes, the straight right that snapped Foreman's head back; the last punch before he fell. Your right. It looked like Ali was just waiting for the perfect time to throw that right (which he leaned into, which came all the way from his feet). When you say the cards, do you mean that Ali was ahead at the time of the KO? Foreman's fans like to say, "Well, he beat the count." That didn't matter. If the ref let the fight go on, Foreman loses a lop-sided decision, at best.
57highland 1 year ago
@tftmc Ali caught Liston all right, and Liston got up (why do that if he dived?), the fight resumed and was then stopped. I'm pretty sure the guy talking here is David Frost who famously interviewed Nixon- mentioning the "phantom" punch doesn't mean he thought there had been one, only that some had claimed so, but here was another "unbeatable" monster Ali had seen off without any shadow of doubt.
mizofan 1 year ago
@mizofan Well, I think Frost referred to it as the "so called 'Phantom Punch" because it's been so commonly referred to as that.
Really, it's hard to say, but Ali did have a sharp straight right, look at the Foreman fight and he was younger in the Liston fight, but personally I don't know, I lean towards it being a dive on Liston's part, I've heard too much weird things.
tftmc 1 year ago
@tftmc
MrRebuttal 1 year ago 2
@MrRebuttal I'll give you this, no matter what happened it boils down to this, either 1 of these 2 happened if he hit him. Ali landed a devastatingly accurate punch to Liston's head & was truly badly hurt, BUT I believe IF he did hit Liston as some believe (i'm not 100% either way) than Ali landed a good, solid punch that hurt Liston, but Liston did stay down for someone else's benefit other than Ali's.
Regardless I think Ali woulda won, Liston's chin wasn't solid & Ali was fresh & FAST
