These hybirds do not offer very good mpg!! I believe VW has a diesel fox which can get 70 mpg. My brother has a 11 year old suzuki and he gets 50 mpg and its a petrol.
We all know hybrids can be beaten by a small diesel, I think the point is that the US prefer petrol while Europe prefers diesel, so a ecocar designed for the US market is going to be a petrol hybrid, while work is underway on diesel hybrids for the European market. I think Peugeot has a diesel hybrid on the way.
True, but I believe the main problem with that is the diesel here in the US isn't as clean as the diesel in the UK. But the low sulfur diesel is suppose to come into play soon. Also will diesel fuel will be cost effective? Before the huge drop in gas prices it reach way beyond $4.00 per gallon. So pollution and cost effectiveness are the main issues I see with diesel. I just hope if diesel cars come into play that diesel prices would be more appealing.

We had the same problem here in NZ until recently, too much sulfur in the local diesel so the latest diesels couldn't be sold here. Diesel here is a little cheaper than petrol, always has been. Combined with much better milage makes good sense for high milage drivers, but do cost more to purchase.

In the early 1800s a minister in britain came up with the stirling engine that was safer and more efficient than the steam engines of the period. In the mid 1800s the stirling was improved with a heat recovery system. Haven't we come a long way lol.
And what`s the deal with that lexus? It looks like a rebadged Prius (it probably more or less IS). For $40k, I think I'd rather just buy a Prius, add leather seat covers, slap on some Lexus emblems, and pocket the savings.

Tata apparently purchased it for 2 billion US dollars... inclusive of land rover and other few companies, but also with a lot of company trouble as Ford hardly made any profit with Jag, so it seems... the tata group consists of 98 companys and is doing business in 85 countries with an annual turnover in 2007 of 62.5 billion US$. with that kind of money, buying jag and landrover was a bargain ;)

Small displacement Diesels with similar HP specs will get far better mileage. They have far better low end torque and can be designed with start stop engine management to save even more gas.
But I still think a steam powered car would be even more efficient than diesel.
While the Prius II gets 46 mpg, the Jetta TDI gets 49, which is the best. Next year's Prius will get 50 mpg. But they think the Prius is the cleanest because it looks like a jellybean. It's all perception...
Start-stop engine management is spiffy, but it only pays for itself in weeks of stop-and-go. They should market it to taxi drivers.

The Prius was a car I've never hated. No way I'll rag on this car. I'm also a Lexus fan. Good luck with Honda bringing back the Insight. I admire Honda for all they do with various vehicles. The boxy design of latest Volvos is one that was to my liking. If this design becomes the true design of future Volvos, they'll be as ugly as another Swedish company- Saab. All I can say is "wow!" for that XFR that's faster than one of my all-time favorite cars- the XJ220.

Remember that petrol ICE are way less than 30% efficient, back in the '60s they were under 20%. Computers, fuel infection, better materials allowing hotter running etc mean every year engines become more powerful as well as more economical. Eg the Nissan 300Z had a 3L turbo injected V6 making about 165Kw, today a 3L V6 routinely makes better than 170Kw without the turbo with much better gas milage. Diesels are more efficient again, well over 30% and some low speed kinds as high as 45%.
They do, in Europe, half the cars sold there are diesel. In the US they seem to prefer petrol, so a petrol hybrid was seen as the way to go. But it probably wouldn't sell well in Europe as its a complicated way to save fuel when a diesel can do better and car buyers like diesels. Europe will get the first diesel hybrids, then we will see incredible fuel misers.

I love Lexus but this new Lexus HS250h is just redicules. If u look at the car properly what does it look? a corolla. why couldn't toyota at least change the body panels completly... i wouldn't mind the chasis being the same. So y pay more for a Hybrid corolla?? just because it has a lexus badge...

The car is bigger than the corolla, its even bigger than the small Lexus, the LS250. Saw that in a comparison report recently, surprised me as I thought it looked smaller.

The Prius was a car I've never hated. No way I'll rag on this car. I'm also a Lexus fan. Good luck with Honda bringing back the Insight. I admire Honda for all they do with various vehicles. The boxy design of latest Volvos is one that was to my liking. If this design becomes the true design of future Volvos, they'll be as ugly as another Swedish company- Saab. All I can say is "wow!" for that XFR that's faster than one of my all-time favorite cars- the XJ220.

Remember that petrol ICE are way less than 30% efficient, back in the '60s they were under 20%. Computers, fuel infection, better materials allowing hotter running etc mean every year engines become more powerful as well as more economical. Eg the Nissan 300Z had a 3L turbo injected V6 making about 165Kw, today a 3L V6 routinely makes better than 170Kw without the turbo with much better gas milage. Diesels are more efficient again, well over 30% and some low speed kinds as high as 45%.

They do, in Europe, half the cars sold there are diesel. In the US they seem to prefer petrol, so a petrol hybrid was seen as the way to go. But it probably wouldn't sell well in Europe as its a complicated way to save fuel when a diesel can do better and car buyers like diesels. Europe will get the first diesel hybrids, then we will see incredible fuel misers.
