  • whilst i can only applaud the stunning portrayal of these characters i think what we forget is that back in 1995 corrie was on three times a week. the actors were able to rehearse and do a dummy run through the scenes. due to the excessive episodes now, (they were up to 6 a week at one point) todays actors dont get that luxury.

  • @prestonboi79 - it's not just that, though. The show is all plot driven now. Do you want to know why they had to do a tram crash and mass death storyline? I'll tell you why - because the characters are not interesting enough anymore to warrant sustained attention. That's why every scene is the characters being driven by events, instead of events being decided by the characters themselves. The prime of Corrie actors came from theatre. The new generation do not have the training to act for drama.

  • Successive producers have done way too many hatchet jobs on Corrie' characters. They talk about how Corrie's next generation of 'stars' have to take this fantastic 'continuing drama',(or SOAP as it should be known as),into the future.Absolute hogwash. The likes of Rita,Norris,Mary et al are what makes Corrie what it is.Do away with them & we all may as well tune into Hollyoaks.Yes,there are some decent younger characters BUT the 'older' ones are invaluable.

  • @popazz1 yup I agree! the older characters add some real charm and character to the show

  • @ohwell94 ,

Thanks.Way I see it,they are the foundation of the Street.Clearly in the next decade or so,(presuming it's still on air),the older characters won't be around, unless the next storyline is about Kevin finding the elixir of youth under his workshop, lol.Hopefully by then the younger crowd will have established themselves as the natural successors to the likes of Rita and Ken etc.

  • @popazz1 yeah I miss the older characters of uncle Albert Ena Elsie Betty etc they were charming to watch and listen to and idenify with and it is so sad that the newer crew don't have the stamina and strength of those to me they are always whining and moaning and such

  • @ohwell94 ,

Well, being 51 I can remember early episodes,in black n white,: ( & yeah, the likes of grumpy old Uncle Albert, lol, and Stan & Hilda, even purple-haired Phylis were so much more credible.I'm not gonna lose any sleep over the likes of Rosie leaving on friday. She simply didn't 'do it' for me.Becky was a terrific character but towards the end it all became a tad 'samey'.And now Terry Duckworth's making a return,to open a lap-dancing club no less.Ena Sharples would be furious, lol.

  • @popazz1 lol I am up there too close to your age myself I cried when Ernest died Mike died and so on but my heart will continue beating when Rosie goes pmsl

  • @ohwell94 ,

Oh,you nrearly had me there, lol.Ernest,Emily's hubby, yeah,I got a tad moist there myself, lol. And Mike's death was a real show-stopper,well,literally for him! 'Rawsie',pah, best she goes now, definitely. As for the wooden-top known as Frank, lol, puhleeeeease,he's about as threatening as Kermit the Frog. And Sally soooo needs a good slap.I'd happily volunteer for that duty.In fact, you & I oughta write future episodes, lol.

  • @popazz1 Darn tootin we should maybe do some casting too and we can draw straws for smack duty for Sally one gives her a good "swipe that superior I am better that you look" off her face and the other hold her down for it!

  • @ohwell94 ,

Hahahahahahaha,oh I imagine there'd be a lengthy queue for that particular duty.Watch out,Sally.Does she never remember she's actually crap at business?! Yup,they've gotta come up with more inventive ways to kill off characters, lol.Maybe Emily could become the next Street serial killer, hahahaha.Death by Charity, hahaha.I mean, surely after so long she must have some simmering grudges building up.She could become a sniper on top of the factory!

  • @popazz1 Maybe Betty killed Frank her and Emily the Thelma and Louise OAP's lol

  • @popazz1 or would that be Gail and Carla? Gail finds the psychos and Carla finds the psychos in the making and "brings out the beast in them" pmsl

  • @popazz1 and I do have one question and comment for the writers if they read these... the smack on the head causing death has been done to death on Corrie PLZ come up with something different!!!

  • @popazz1 Des Tommy Charlie Maxine Emily Richard Hillman's ex Charlotte attempt on Tracy on New Years Eve all within the last decade! Enough

  • @ohwell94 ,

Hahahahahaha, what a memory! Now I think about it,Gail's not had an attempt on her life for quite a few months now.Perhaps Emily could start with her.I dunno, maybe she's pissed off with David's attempt at giving her a rinse & she flips, deciding to take the Platts hostage, lol.Or young Simon steals the charity boxes & Emily becomes God's avenging angel.Emily definitely needs a storyline, with BLOOD,hahaha.

  • @popazz1 now THAT would be quite twist! Or maybe Ken killed them with bordem by reading to them out load a new breed of serial killer

  • @ohwell94 ,

    Hahahahahahaha,oh I can't keep up with you,lol.Lol,Death By Reading."Dreary,I say,Dreary,put t'kettle on,I've got me reading group here" Bwahhhhhhhhhhahhhhhhhh! Anywho,Corrie afficianado,it's time for me to hit the hay,busy day tomorrow.Been a little slice ofheaven,for sure.To be continued.......

  • @popazz1 lol how about death by kettle? just a question here but is it just a Corrie thing or what that the answer to every crisis on Corrie is put the kettle on? tram crash? put the kettle on! murder? put the kettle on! rape? put the kettle on!

  • @popazz1 and furthermore the rumor mill Frank is supposed to be murdered and I don't care I won't miss him I am more interested in seeing the smirk wiped off Sally's face pmsl

  • Great Stuff! Bet Lynch please come back. Far better than that Panto Dame Shaun behind the bar

  • love it. but rita looks older there than she does now lol

  • Is it just a coincidence that Les Dennis' career fell down the bog when Mavis Wilton left Coronation Street?

  • @GuantanamoFever In answer to your question, 'ooh I don't really know...!'

    ;)

  • @pufferfishish If it's up there, Ill give you the money myself

  • @GuantanamoFever haha, I know that on one occasion, the obscure/funny answer they gave WAS up on the board and I think he actually gave them the money himself

  • Those Taj Mahal wigs were impressively unshakeable during that bust up. Outstanding!

  • I remember this. The two characters were best friends but never made it up after their argument. Then Bet left.

  • I Personally think Bet Lynch should return as a perm role, look at most of the characters today, Bet would defiantly get a big storyline return. Especially if it involves her and Rita.

I could see Bet returning and her and Rita make up and end up buying the Rovers together and then keeping them two running it until Julie and Barbara decide to leave the show or leave for other reasons. Think they'd be a great pair to run a pub at their ages. Annie Walker did.

  • she had some pair of fucking jugosaura's on her back in the day....but she turned out to be a lesbian,,,she had a pakistani girlfriend, i think her name was Mingetar!!!!!!

  • Brilliant fresh as a daisy i remember this, i say fresh as a daisy.

  • I can't quite remember this scene as I was only two at the time but just looking at this makes Bet my all time favourite bring her back

  • "You'd not be stood there with a bulging bank balance if you hadn't flaming' married it"

Love it!!! They just don't write scenes like this anymore. Such a shame.

  • Wow, it's scenes like this which make you realise how much soaps have changed in the last 16 years. None of the newer characters in Corrie today could ever become legends like Bet Lynch.x

  • "PALS?! PALS?!?!"

    Go Bet.

  • What a scene.........Julie Goodyear is exceptional here, you could really tell that Bet was loosing everything. The last few seconds when you can see the hurt in her face is outstanding acting!!

  • This well written and brilliantly acted scene, part of Bet's departure storyline, running alongside the ridiculous if comical wandering gnome saga!

  • "But for him you'd have been nothing but a clapped out chorus girl!" "Better than a clapped out Barmaid!" When these two fought they fought nasty lol.

  • Julie Goodyear - the Susan Lucci of the UK!!!

  • corrie was here before dynasty and dallas

  • PALS?! PALS?! lolz :)

  • not an eighth on peggy vs pat... what stale, copycat, weak, overacted crap!!

  • @Eurafrican This was many years before Peggy vs Pat, troll

  • @triggsy80 copycat of dallas and dynasty, did i say it was copycat of peggy vs pat ape

  • @Eurafrican they were here before pat and peggy actually

  • @TheRenardpoint am i disputing that?! my point is this scene was fake as julie goodyear's hairpiece. barbara knox is a good actress tho.

  • @Eurafrican you cretin, the only similarity to Dynasty & Dallas is the shoulder pads. You're seriously trying to compare American shitty catfights between Alexis & Sable to these two working class characters? And if truth be told Coronation WAS the first to have catfights, watch Elsie Tanner & Ena Sharples fighting on the cobbles back in the 1960's, you gimp.

  • That was good.

  • Bet Lynch was Corrie, Julie knew it the viewers knew it. This was Classic. As Betty Turpin said recently bet Lynch was the best bar maid Corrie ever had... But everyone knows, she was so much more!

  • @DMF1310 Agreed for more than 25 years she enterntained nation as Bet Lynch/Gilroy with her constant wisecracks and one liners.

  • Wow - watching these Youtube clips of classic Corrie reminds how much better it was in the old days. Corrie today has nothing on the golden years - even with exploding wine bars !

  • im the one thats sorry cock...lol

  • Miss Bet she was and will always be Corrie legend.

  • The acting in this scene outshines anything Corrie has produced in the entire last ten years. Even the facial expressions are down to a tee. Compare these two with the likes of Fizz. It's rather quite depressing.

  • @BCJ1985 I really agree with you there. There is a thing such as timing when acting, getting that timing right, and producing the appropriate facial expressions, to make the performance look even more convincing, looking at television now, it only seems to be the older generation of actors that has these qualities. I am fed up of seeing bits of kids who cant act 'thrown in' to soaps whether they can act or not, all to try and attract a 'teen' audience to the show.

  • @BCJ1985 I cannot stand Fiz.

  • @BCJ1985 LOL! Yes, quite right!

  • Bet's exit heralded the end of the golden years for the Street.

  • @morgansifer82 Agreed so sad when Bet left, Rovers and Street its self was barely the same after.

  • "But for 'im, yerd be NOUGHT but a clapped out chorus girl!"

  • I will always remember this scene I was about 11 or 12

I wish Julie would return for more juicy scenes with Barbara Knox - such chemistry

  • @smck2009 I was about the same age and these were very emotional scenes played out by Julie Goodyear as Bet and Barbara Knox as Rita, knowing she was fighting losing battle trying save Rovers Return and Rita was her last hope.

  • this is when corrie was at its best !!

  • Corrie had such incredible characters at this time -- even when the stories weren't great the characters pulled them through.

  • Two great actresses and a brilliant story for Bet. Both are iconic corrie characters and its worth remebering them and their stories as Corrie turns 50!
