anyone know the names mentioned in the song are all people important to sesame workshop- Joe (Raposo), Jane & Jim ( Henson) and Joan( Ganz -Cooney.) Just an observation,.
It's gotta be Frank, because the voice is quite clearly him. Anyway, here's another mistake that someone once pointed out to me - after Fat Blue's verse, he goes offscreen for a second, well before that his eye looks loose. He went off screen so they could press his eye back on!
I always thought the last J Friend was "Jones" instead of "Joan", guess I was thinking of the muppets singing the song, three guys and one girl, that the descriptions applied to one another. Of course I've since found out that Jean, Jane, Jim and Joan are the geniuses involved with the Sesame Street muppets, and a mighty fine job they did, too.
This song is such a sweet little tribute to Jeff Moss' real-life "J Friends". Joe Raposo (with his famed sweet-tooth), Jane Henson (I love that Jim Henson sings the verse about his friend Jane), tall slim Jim Henson, and Joan Ganz Cooney (co-founder of the Children's Television Workshop who handled a lot of phone calls). Great stuff!
I cant believe that I found this. This is my another of my favorites. Thank you thank you. some one stole my tape with all my favorite songs on it. Thank you thank thank you.
@4iamaqt : There were a lot of popular-song parodies on Sesame Street, but this isn't one of them; it was an original composed specifically for the show, with no other song in mind.
I'm not sure, but I think they may be referring to the "Sesame Street" creative staff, many of whom had names that begin with J. Joe could be Joe Raposo, Joan could be Joan Cooney, Jim would obviously be Jim Henson (who was tall and slim). I'm not sure about Jane, but Jane Henson, Jim's wife, was occasionaly doing puppets, I think.
You are absolutely right. Joe is Joe Raposo (who was Sesame Street's songwriter); Jane was Jim Henson's wife; Jim is, obviously, Jim Henson, as he's tall and slim; and Joan is Joan Ganz Cooney (though I doubt she talked on the phone all the time, as mentioned in the song).
@TelephoneRock4ever : From what I read in "Street Gang: a Complete History of Sesame Street", Joan Ganz Cooney *did* have to take a lot of phone calls in CTW's early days, mostly from people looking for work or for merchandising tie-ins. Sounds as if that "jawing on the phone" described her accurately, after all.
Don't forget Jerry Juhl either. Although he wrote primarily for "The Muppet Show" and "Fraggle Rock", he was also involved with "Sesame Street" in its early phases.
@efil4own1 : With two Jerrys to choose from, Jeff Moss would've kept the other friends (not to mention millions of viewers) guessing who he really had in mind. :-)
@AnimationDiana : Jeff actually wrote this song himself, as a light-hearted tribute to his "J friends" at work. (I'm guessing that one or more of them joked about the gang sharing a common initial, and the rest was history...)
I'm 42 & still sing this.

J-joint, that's the point, because that's what the King used to anoint the people. J-joint, I appoint, to be my friend, not for the coin.

It's ironic- J is the fourth least used letter in the alphabet, but about 10-15% of Jeneration X-ers have a name beginning with J.
