Better than "great job"! Young man, you have a fine foundation. What are you doing now, may I ask? I am a drammatic soprano and have been intending on doing this cycle in concert for years. Finally, I'm preparing now, looked on youtube and was so impressed by your voice, technique, and understanding of the musical/poetic lines. Are you in a singing career now? Do tell....
you did an OK job on it. your swaying back and forth was definitely distracting, and you scooped A LOT in this piece.
idk, for it being pretty much completely arpeggiated you smoothed it out a lot and that was really great but like i said...the scooping occured way more than necessary :/
organman52: if you don't like this, or find it unoriginal, visit your local Starbucks and hear Shelby Lynne sing "Gotta Get Back." Tell us what you think. (To the rest of you: this is Shelby Lynne song is one of the most obnoxious things imaginable. Pure drivel).
1] I am one of the most calm people I know. 2] I think you need to develop a sense of what makes great music great. 3] Anyone who supports this drivel as art music needs rehabilitation.
I was just giving you a hard time. It's an opinion, you can hate Rorem if you'd like....but palpably he he has done pretty well and has done something right.
I hated the music at first, but ended up appreciating it. It's not a Beethoven String Quartet, or a Mahler 'Lied', or one of Schubert's Lieder, or a Brahms Symphony - but it WORKS. It portrays the text with a continual and never ceasing accompaniment that offers the vocalist a consistent and perpetual foundation to sing upon.
You won't find anything approaching drivel in Rorem's beautifully crafted works - try Stockhausen's Helicopter String quartet, or anything by John Cage.
@organman52 : You're such a f*ckface, I argued so much with you. Endlessly I see your stupid comments here on Youtube. You are such a buffoon. I wipe my ass with your brains.
You really have some serious issues. I don't even know who you are.
I'd remove your comments, but I think the fact that you try so hard to broadcast yourself as a fool is admirable, so I'll let your comments continue to sit.
sweet. i'm singing this song for lessons this semester.. its so good. I love how unpredictable it is, and how it clearly conveys the emotions that go along with the text.
good job! although i'm a girl and it sounds different in my voice, i liked your style. the way i sing it is a little lighter and softer, and your second section is a little faster. but i kind of liked that.. it gave me more of a sense of urgency.
At first, I didn't really like this set of pieces...but they really grew on me. I think Rorem did a great job of using the music to portray and capture what David was feeling when he wrote/sang his Psalms.

@npa589 Oh I see - it 'works.' Do Brahms' symphonies 'work?' Do Schubert's lieder 'work?'
