So to prove his innocence he's calling upon God to let him kill the other guy - who had nothing to do with the quarrel. And God is supposed to take sides over the ownership of a city? Christianity is sooo messed up! Always was - always will be.
El Cid killed his fiance's father? That's one way of getting out of a marriage. Haven't seen this great movie in years. And it's nice to see an action movie w/o CGI.
I agree with Maunus: the battle scenes are REAL, not CGI--and have real danger and thrills to them, especially the "unhorsing" moment and the Cid's use of the saddle as weapon.
@MStrat1106 No film is 'real' & whilst there's considerable risk to stuntmen, everything' s planned to the last detail. This scene works because of Miklos Rozsa's great music score too: his piece uses two authentic Cantigas of Santa Maris from the 13th Century. This was one of the last scenes in the film to be shot. You might notice that Rodrigo and Don Martin actually charge each other on 'the wrong side of the road', with their shields not facing each other's onslaught. A real mistake.
The battle scenes in earlier movies are a lot better than battle scenes these days. Battle scenes these days suck because they focus on too much dram during battle. But the earlier movies it was pure action!
Hollywood is famous for twisting both religion and history... pity the fools who learn both only from movies

@gandm4m Nonsense. the Bible is replete with examples of God taking sides in battles.

"Our Lord was surely with you." Would this be the same Lord who said "Love your enemies ... turn the other cheek."?
