@ValentinaLisitsa Incredible and breath-taking sounds! But, I think the TRUE world's fastest pianist is Cyprien Katsaris! Watch his J.S.Bach: BWV565 (his own transcription to piano!)
@sternumagnum The artist name is Valentina Lisitsa. Logged in my youtube account just so you could know what to look for when searching for a great GREAT piano genius. (:
Indeed a phenomenal pianist. All of these geniuses,Lisitsia,Hamelin,Wang,Volodos,Grosvenor etc.have their own unique characteristics. When communicating music there are 2 parties.Giver and receiver(we). Also we,the receivers have our own unique way to decode what we hear.Thats why I believe comparing these geniuses is totaly irrelevant. You can like or dislike someone's playing.I,for myself keep always in mind the countless hours, love and passion they put in the piano. And I respect everyone of them.
You know, if anyone needed evidence this lady practiced 10 hrs a day for several years, this is it. Maybe her husband was jealous at one time of her enormous gift, but at some point he had to realize this is a genetic freak. There is no competition with this somehow impossible combination of Horowitz, Hoffman and a half a dozen other stratospheric artists,
This could so easily have sounded like schlock. Only a genius ... Just stop it now, OK, V? You've practiced enough now. Just blown AWAY.
@rickideemus I put her in a class with Hamelin in terms of her sheer virtuosity, but I prefer VL's music-making. She also strikes me as a really thoroughly nice person, which is such a bonus in an area of endeavour so prone to prima donnas and diva-ish behaviour.
I watch this performance over and over again and keep looking for evidence of a second, or perhaps third, piano. Alas, again and again, just one piano on stage ... but I am now convinced ...two separate brains both under the most exquisite command of this musical giant.
I watch this performance over and over again and keep looking for evidence of a second, or perhaps third, piano. Alas, again and again, just one piano on stage ... but I am now convinced ...two separate brains both under the most exquisite command of this musical giant.
Also, this is the most killer piece ever, most pianists I know, including myself can't play it correctly. So goddamn complicated. I respect you ever more know, I mean, HOW MUCH BETTER CAN YOU GET!? (LOL!)

@MrLabrant I'm adding an 8th "dislike", so consider about searching for my parents too. I'll light a candle the day this lady understands that music is not by playing the fastest ;)
@1goodnessme Immature much? Did you even read the vid description? Do you even know who Lisitsa is?? Labrant's comment was dumb, but that's no reason for you to stoop to his level
Who the hell are you to judge Valentina Lisita? Are you out of your mind? My whole life of studying, completing and performing classical music at various orchestras and conservatories, I have NEVER seen any pianist of her skill! She plays everything correct and flawless, but is not some sort of MIDI file that plays nice, she makes it goddamn sensual and with her style. She knows more about piano and music than you will in your entire life. Asshole. You're epic Lisita!
@1goodnessme, In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community. I'm calling you as a troll. I'll light a candle the day you understand humour, and another the day you understand music.
I can't believe people actually think someone of her skill would have to resort to speed up her videos to impress people.... jealous people are jealous
The fact that you play so many things better than anyone else in the world doesn't make you a great philosopher. You may feel that "MUSIC IS NEVER ABOUT COMPETITION," and that obviously works for you, but there ARE great artists who obsess over the competitive angle, and that truly seems to works for them.
Valentina, do you have any idea if Strauss or even all the other great composers first made their pieces in their heads or on the paper?? im guessing on their minds first... such genious dont require a memory assistance such like the paper..
You're incredible! Your lighthearted-ness and sheer love for music always shines through your performances! I'm sure I'll have the pleasure of meeting you at Farley's one of these days.
@ValentinaListsa what do you do to keep your hands in such good condition for the piano? I am very curious please can I get an answer from you all mighty piano player O.O
the playing, while fantastic, is not as awesome as the use of "LOL" and "OMG" in the title and description... you're just a "ROFL" away from a 5 star performance...
Ah, Liszt is my favourite composer. I wasn't aware Valentina that he was considered to be underrated though! What a shame. His music is just amazing! I hope you do more of his works. Maybe his rhapsodies 4,5 or 6 :)
The fastest thing that I've ever seen, in terms of written tempo, at least, was Alkan's Le Chemin de Fer. It was measured at 112=half note, with 16 notes running in the right hand for the full duration of the 500 measure piece. It ends up being 896 notes per minute, 1 measure per second.
i don't think it was that fast. but then again, i think there were parts in there where i could discern some very precise and quick playing by which i realized i'm just probably not musically trained enough to hear every note that you are actually playing. :) you are a true inspiration
Valentina since we are talking speed here I was wondering what you thought of Richter. After watching his Chopin Etude Op 10 No 4 I couldn't to watch in amazement this performance. Some will say rushed what ever but the speed and dexterity is stunning.
Ms. Lisitsa, i must say there is no denying how wonderfully and perfectly you have brought off the piece. Presumably, since this is Godowsky that you have began to take into your repertoire, I would very sincerely suggest the Chopin-Godowsky Etudes for your consideration. I would dearly love to hear those pieces coming out from your astonishing pair of hands. Greetings from Hong Kong.
I have watched the whole thing not just because of how inventive and beautiful this piece is, but because of how beautifully you played it. Thank you for this. You are amazing.
What a wonderful music, the sound of that Bosen is only possible at Valentina's hands.
Valentina, I'm a fan of Mozart, it would be incredible to hear you a piece, just a piece from Mozart, I mean you have some Beethoven's pieces why not Mozart??
you are an amazing pianist, and i love listening to everything you play. but i would love more than anything to see you play Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz, by john stump.
Ms Lisitsa i can't find Chopin's Nocturne in C sharp minor recorded from you.Haven't you recorded this one?it's my favourite piece of Chopin and i would like to hear it from my favourite pianist.
By the way,i think this is the best performance my eyes have seen and unfortunately not live !Thank you!!
ps:i'm not living in Germany but i'll try to attend Dortmund's concert(my aunt lives there :)
I've seen and heard this several times. With a few friends and alone. And even when I'm alone I feel an urge to stand up an applaud Lisitsas performance.
what about little red riding hood (rachmaninoff)? doesnt that beat this one in terms of velocity... i think your interpretation of that is just ridicilously (in a good way) fast - beyond belief...
Awesome! Valentina Lisitsa, do you know the Nelson Freire's interpretation of this? It is quite different of yours, but both are very very beautifful! Congratulations! By the way, what do you think about my fellow countryman Nelson Freire (as a pianist)?
I made a very interesting comparison, by listening alternatively to chunks of performance by Lisitsa and Hamelin. There's no actual winner as they both bring out different shades and nuances from this very rich piece.
Someone could be surprised to read that I think Lisitsa's performance sounds more "virtuoso" while Hamelin's rendition sounds somehow more "intellectual".
Mrs Lisitsa, all your music is delightful to listen to, you've made some of my favourite interpretations of some of my favourite pieces, particularly your Chopin Polonaise op 40 no 2 in C min, and Rach's prelude in G min! I'm hoping to see you perform Beethoven's Pathetique, and I think your beautifully expressive technique would particularly lend itself to Debussy. Not to mention your wonderful Bosendorfer! Thanks for all your videos! Quick question: Have you recorded any Schumann Kinderscenen?
What can I say! I'm in love with you!!! lol u are a great pianist, like you technique and great sense of humor! If you want I can marry with you ;) lol Thank for your videos Valentina !
You are NOT a Horovitz reincarnation, you are Lisitsa, Lisitsa and again, Lisitsa! Never heard such an intelligent interpretation before! Unbelievable!
Valentina you've WOW'ed us once again. Your interpretation is so beautifully tuneful it makes us forget how difficult it is to play this piece - always the case with your playing. Thank you so much for bringing such wonderful performances into our homes. God bless you and keep you for very many more years of sharing your amazing talent with us.
miss valentina i am rana 24 years old a small pianist and music teacher and i think u r the best pianist in this time i wish if i had a teacher like u. when my professor saw your videos in my i phone he cried and tell me 30 years i was sure that iam good pianist and iwant to ask u can i make any progress in this old age i started to play and study piano in 17 years old ?
@kingofpopmylove I'm not Valentina, but if I may... You can make great progress, even if you started at 17. I think the most important thing is to develop your aural skills. Technique can be acquired by anyone. Musical imagination and understanding is what really makes a great pianist, and this relies on a highly developed ear -the main problem for adults. Many teachers neglect this, as some kids pick it up effortlessly. I'd bet that Valentina has a musical ear to rival her technique :)
So much beauty, heart and soul!!!.....by the way...there are many people with Sudden deafn of one ear...like me...many videos in my channel are in mono for that reason. There many russians musicians in my family. Regards and spasiba!!!, Sergio.
Considering your strength when you are playing and the muscles of your hand, Valentina, I have the funny impression that you could stop a wrestler with your fingers LOL.
@TripleRhu i will record it after Liszt anniversary crowd disperses :) I feel that Liszt is one of the most under-appreciated composers and I am mortified to think that after a small splash due to his 200th birthday pianists will abandon him yet again. It seems now like just about anybody and their dog try their hand in Sonata. But it's not a piece to do once and forget. It's just as ground-breaking and visionary work as Beethoven sonatas.
@ValentinaLisitsa Not me... i am crazy about Liszt and I am currently trying to learn La Campanella.... Liszt is my favourite along with Chopin and Beethoven...
From your description, I went from reading about Joesph Hoffmann to Anton Rubinstein to Frederic Chopin. Although it did help that Chopin is my favorite composer. Thank you for the inspiration.
@BeBopDeluxe85 Or Chopin competing with Liszt - behind a curtain? So the audience mixed the two up - they thought Chopin was Liszt , and Liszt - Chopin. I always wonder if those two guys did it on purpose :)
@ValentinaLisitsa hahaha, well said. They probably did do it on purpose just to mess with the audience. Might i just say your performance in Beethoven's Emperor was amazing... i have literally broken the replay button from listening to it so much. Along with Gould and Horowitz you are one of my most favorite pianists..
valentina, as you state, these categorizations of "best" pianist seem more an attempt to validate one's own prejudices, but speaking of another youtube phenom, yuja wang, would be very interested on your take on her ability and accomplishments. although basically subjective, your well documented credentials as another extremely gifted artist would certainly lend more credence to your assessment than the typical youtube troller.
Im still waiting her to play the horowitz style Schero No.1 and Horowitz Rachmaninoff 3rd Movement Sonata No.2 and some of Liszt Horowittz Rhapsodys like 15 2 and 19 hehehe! Great work btw!
@frankorusso I am doing an analogue one - with Liszt. The primary "product' will be an LP. There are many pieces that lose too much aural quality in digital.
Wow! Wonderful interpretation. For the next edition of the competition, you can play Pancrace Royer's "The March of Scythes", one of the most virtuosistic pieces for Harpsichord. Of course, many ones play it in a Moderato style. But his true character is as fast as possible. You can look for the version of Skip Sempe. I'm sure that, in your hands, will sound fantastic! Greetings!
I have watched your video many times. Some times I mute the sound and just watch your hands dancing on the keyboard. It is the most beautiful and elegant movement ( body, arms, hands) of all the pianists I have ever seen. Thank you, Vlentina for many enjoyable hours.
You know that experiment wasn't confirmed yet (probably never)? The scientists at CERN submitted their results for review precisely because it is far more likely a mistake was made somewhere in their methodology than for neutrinos to travel at superluminal speeds. The same thing happened last year with the results from the Tevatron. After much investigation it turned out to be a false alarm.
It reminds me of other genre pieces written for American audiences and sometimes used in high end mechanical pianos at the beginning of last century. Demonstrating how many notes can be struck quickly after another or at once helped to sell Duo Arte and other expensive machines. At least you put enough of your own in this performance to bring this beyond the mechanics. And yes, I also find Hoffmann interesting (see one of my Chopin video's for Wildejagd)
Ms.Val! The performance of the palace of Salzburg was shocking, too, and the performance of you was good. I think that both are elegant, and the performance in this Beethoven-Haus is splendid.
I think that you are the modern best pianist.
The world is fastest, and it will be a maximum that you return comment. (LOL)
I saw you a few weeks ago here in Italy at Villa d'Este. It was amazing, I've never experienced such a performance in my life. Is there any video of that night? I would be very glad to watch again Liszt's ballade no 2, or Totentanz.
Valentina, you are so wonderful to post your thoughts here to give us your insights into what you put into each piece. What a brilliant performance this was and I agree with your sentiments about LOUD, FAST, etc... Still, it's a lot of fun for the audience to see and hear you tackle such showy pieces as this one :)
Hey @valentinalisitsa I would love to watch you play the tempest sonata 3rd movement cause thats the song I'm doing right now... And if I practice enough one day I wanna see how it would sound like ... Pleeaseeee :) :)
I wish I played the piano before I hit the age of 5 I'm 14 and have been playing the piano for 7 months and still thing I will be able to do this one day..... Something like this , it is so beautiful thank you Valentina because you make me feel better when I think something is hopeless ;)
OMG the jumps you did with your left hand ! Do you make sometimes mistakes ?

Valentina you've WOW'ed us once again. Your interpretation is so beautifully tuneful it makes us forget how difficult it is to play this piece - always the case with your playing. Thank you so much for bringing such wonderful performances into our homes. God bless you and keep you for very many more years of sharing your amazing talent with us.

miss valentina i am rana 24 years old a small pianist and music teacher and i think u r the best pianist in this time i wish if i had a teacher like u. when my professor saw your videos in my i phone he cried and tell me 30 years i was sure that iam good pianist and iwant to ask u can i make any progress in this old age i started to play and study piano in 17 years old ?
kingofpopmylove 4 months ago
@kingofpopmylove I'm not Valentina, but if I may... You can make great progress, even if you started at 17. I think the most important thing is to develop your aural skills. Technique can be acquired by anyone. Musical imagination and understanding is what really makes a great pianist, and this relies on a highly developed ear -the main problem for adults. Many teachers neglect this, as some kids pick it up effortlessly. I'd bet that Valentina has a musical ear to rival her technique :)

Great. After Scarbo, however, nothing surprises me any more:)
Much more interesting than the techniques is the musicality. In spite of all pianistic brilliance the joy about the music is shining through.

Considering your strength when you are playing and the muscles of your hand, Valentina, I have the funny impression that you could stop a wrestler with your fingers LOL.

Ms. Lisitsa, are you planning to play Liszt's Sonata in h-moll? I would be very happy to hear you play it
TripleRhu 5 months ago in playlist More videos from ValentinaLisitsa 7

CamelotRecords 5 months ago
What about the competition where Mozart destroyed Clementi... is that silly?
BeBopDeluxe85 5 months ago
@BeBopDeluxe85 Or Chopin competing with Liszt - behind a curtain? So the audience mixed the two up - they thought Chopin was Liszt , and Liszt - Chopin. I always wonder if those two guys did it on purpose :)
ValentinaLisitsa 4 months ago 10
@ValentinaLisitsa hahaha, well said. They probably did do it on purpose just to mess with the audience. Might i just say your performance in Beethoven's Emperor was amazing... i have literally broken the replay button from listening to it so much. Along with Gould and Horowitz you are one of my most favorite pianists..
BeBopDeluxe85 4 months ago
valentina, as you state, these categorizations of "best" pianist seem more an attempt to validate one's own prejudices, but speaking of another youtube phenom, yuja wang, would be very interested on your take on her ability and accomplishments. although basically subjective, your well documented credentials as another extremely gifted artist would certainly lend more credence to your assessment than the typical youtube troller.

@frankorusso I am doing an analogue one - with Liszt. The primary "product' will be an LP. There are many pieces that lose too much aural quality in digital.
ValentinaLisitsa 4 months ago
@ValentinaLisitsa
Maybe... (I'm not so sure, considering present digital technologies...)
However, if you are agree, I'd love to make a Binaural Recording for you, next time you'll play in (or near) Italy.
Happy to hear you! :)

Greetings!

@RefletdOmbres
After much investigation it turned out to be a false alarm.
elementc 4 months ago
@RefletdOmbres Which reminds me of a story:
The bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve neutrinos."
A neutrino walks into a bar.

And yes, I also find Hoffmann interesting (see one of my Chopin video's for Wildejagd)
donthuis 5 months ago
Ms.Val! The performance of the palace of Salzburg was shocking, too, and the performance of you was good. I think that both are elegant, and the performance in this Beethoven-Haus is splendid.
I think that you are the modern best pianist.
The world is fastest, and it will be a maximum that you return comment. (LOL)

Dear Mrs. Lisitsa,
I saw you a few weeks ago here in Italy at Villa d'Este. It was amazing, I've never experienced such a performance in my life. Is there any video of that night? I would be very glad to watch again Liszt's ballade no 2, or Totentanz.
Thank you very much!
