I have been playing drums for 35 years and only recently started playing congas.
I've found them to be much harder to play than it looks and very little (other than knowledge of music, time signatures etc.) seems to carry over from playing a kit with sticks. JMHO
Every body has different way of playing Congas I have been playing for 40 yrs playing Salsa, Merenque, Cumbias and Funk your style is unsual, but as long as you can get a sound I guess it's OK, but nobody knows more than the Masters
i have question im a begainer conga player and i have a set of lp aspires with what looks like the same heads ur playing my heads are way to stiff very hard on the hands do they make a softer head ? or can you make the heads on them softer ?
@paulolivares21 I do think that for a good sound you strive for the best vibration between you and the instrument. Just hit it many times, and stay open for how it felt, littarly, and how it sounded. Every time make minor changes in how you hit it and and again make an (e)motional imprint. This way, keep searching for your optimal sound.
@paulolivares21 Thank you for your comment. I am sorry, but I have not much to say about tuning. For these movies, I just used what was available in the room at that moment. Tuning wise, sometimes I was lucky, and some times I was not.
You make it seem so effortless and 'clean'. Great to try to learn from, but would be nice to have more teaching clips from you. Also I have tried to find your other conga clips but apart from the three that always come up nothing else to find. Bracumba brings up nothing and your web site shows the amazing little girl doing the clave rhythm but nil else for congas. Worth a visit however to see the clips of the fantastice djembe drummer from africa
u invite him to habana my friend?? what s so strange about him?? can unplay better than him? This is only a conga lesson and u r making too much fuss!!
i'd give my left nut to play like this

Does it take 10,000 hours specifically on the congas to master them, or does time on a drum kit and/or bongos count?

They are/were not mine. I just borrowed them. So I don't know the type, but the small one was a Sennheiser and the bigger one a AKG

I love those grooves! What size congas are those? Kind of looks like quinto and tumba.

They are a Conga and a Tumba.
johanaben 2 years ago
@johanaben Can you give head sizes please? Standard11 3/4" conga and 12 1/2"tumba?
drowe77 1 year ago
@drowe77 They are indeed standard Conga and Tumba from LP. I don't know the exact sizes. Sorry.
johanaben 1 year ago
I do not know, sorry. I make no conscious decision about them. I have no microphones off my own, and just use what I can borough from friends.
