Love this version. Thought Mrs Gardener was much more like the book in this version. She was very insipid in the 2005. Did this for Inter cert at school and we kept rewinding the bit at the end where he smiles!!!
I can understand why people say they like Colin Firth's Darcy better than Rintoul's, the problem is that mr Darcy, according to Jane Austen, is not exactly someone you would like at first sight. While every other P&P version always depict Darcy as the most stereotypical romantic hero, David Rintoul just gives us the character as Jane Austen wrote it - so, who thinks he's not as good as the others should probably read the novel with more attention.
I am doing a close reading and extraction of specific extractions from P& P at the moment and it is these two that I come back to in my head. other characters from the other bbc & film fill in.
For me, the end of this version, with Darcy offering his arm to Elizabeth and her accepting it when they finally become engaged, is more meaningful than all that kissy schmoosy stuff at the end of the 2005. Grew up on this version and will always love it the best.
I just watched this yesterday and I absolutely loved it. David rintoul was great! And even though he seemed akward, it's what I imagined mr. Darcy to be. I also loved the few times he smiled :D
For years my sis and I have known that the 1980 BBC version of P&P is the only one worth considering! Garvie and Rintoul are incredible--and the rest of the cast is ...perfect!
I always thought Elizabeth Garvie was a fantastic Lizzy, but I never cared for Rintoul's Darcy. He didn't connect with an audience, which is somthing Colin Firth had no problem with.
Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle were too old for their parts. Garvie and Rintoul are the perfect ages and this adaptation is excellent, despite Sir Lucas and Maria being left out of the visit to Hunsford.
This 1980 Pride & Prejudice version with David Rintoul and E. Garvie is the most authentic. Read Austen's book and you will discover that Mr. Rintoul played Mr. Darcy most accurately. I have seen the Colin Firth verson. Mr. Firth was good and quite handsome but not as convincing a Mr. Darcy as David Rintoul. Miss Garvie was amazing! I promise you, if you love Jane Austen, you will love this 1980 version--- the characters are endearing and memorable.
@oxford14 I've re-read the book recently and re-watched all the 4 productions. Be sure that I'm not just getting impressed by colin Firth's shirt, although it pleases me a lot. I've cut the same sequence in the four productions and put in my channel. So people can watched t hem and get a better vision of it. And I keep my opinion. And don't think that I despeise de 1980's versions. It's really good, but Rintoul does not impresses me as Darcy.
@oxford14 You are absolutely right. David Rintoul does perfect justice to Mr. Darcy's character, sticking to the book as much as possible. I saw others as Mr. Darcy (including Colin) and it seemed they have made an effort to please the general populace and trend rather than what the book represents, a smug, arrogant and proud man who has as much difficulty in displaying his emotions as he has in making acquaintances .
To see a video of 1980's P&P is a lovely surprise. Nice video. But, in fact, I cannot praise David Rintoul's Darcy. It's not enjoyable. It's only best than Laurance Olivier's one... or else, I do not know.
I just received this version this morning from Amazon via Holland import, you can buy the copy from them reasonably priced, only about £7 including post.
I'll gladly put the version up myself, but need to find out how to do it first.
It's so underrated because everyone only sees the 1995 one with Colin Firth as the only P&P .. this was actually the first .. excluding the 1940 version.
good job with the video...i have one question though i've watched every version of pnp ever made but i can't find this one anywhere doeas anybody know where i can download it or watch it..
This is awesome! Damn, I wish I was creative enough to create videos like this and find the appropriate songs to accompany it. I mean, I hate when my VP asks me to create powerpoints...I am great with computers but not very "creative"--except with fashion. LOL! Again, thanks and this was very nice.
oh, my God !!!! I was thirteen years old when I saw this version on spanish TV, and I still remembered .... And now, I´d just watched this video.... I remember than after saw this version of P%P, I read the novel....my favourite since and until now... but I prefer Colin Firth.... He is the only Mr Darcy forever......
I haven't seen any other versions than this 1980 adaption. It is good enough for me. The 1995 version is posted on Ytube so maybe I'll watch it. I can't be any better than the book and this version would be hard to beat...
@erikasfo Are you kidding? Jane is gorgeous in this version, unlike the 1995, where she looks like a chubby version of a badly-done image on an ancient Greek vase or something, with Jennifer as Lizzie clearly outshining her.
hey if you got the hole 5 chapters, could you upload them? I've search everywhere for a site to watch it but I can't find it anywhere and I have heard this is the best adaptation, so if you have them, please load them up
if you read people's reviews on imdb, this is the BEST P&P version. I tend to think so too. Nowadays everything is just sexed up. It's like they upped the sex meter. So maybe the actors are equally good (maybe), but the sexy parts are distracting. This is LITERATURE. This is what you imagine Darcy and Lizzie to be, not great beauties, or sexpots, just what Jane Austen had imagined them to be. And that's what we want to see - the novel brought to life.
Thank you for sharing this version. I've often thought it was the best acted version I've ever seen. In 1980 I had just finished reading the book when this came on the BBC Masterpiece Theater show. It was wonderful. There was a magical and innocent quality to the performances without relinquishing the under currents of intense emotions. Beautifully filmed and overall a true masterpiece. The choice of music is amusing. Best wishes & thanks.
Do you know a link where I coud watch the serie from 1980 I'm a litlle new on the internet and I don't find the full movie only small videos like yours.
This version holds a special [lace in my heart, too - I was ayoung, unmarried woman in 1980 and I remember seeing this when it was first aired. I love the 1995 version as well , though. 2005 movie was awful mainly because Keira looked sooo dowdy - no bonnets, no jewelry, no chest - she was dressed like a chambermaid about to mop the floors!
She could have been made to look pretty for the film because she is a beautiful actress. I watched 1980 version on youtube last year! Maybe it was deleted?
I've watched this version at least once every couple years since the early 90s - There is something special about it and the actors. Now I need to go find this again at the library!
This is a great version of the story! I got a copy from a British friend years ago, and both the actors who played Mr Darcy and Elizabeth were great. This is the only version that brought out the possibility that Darcy fell in love because she is the only women not persuing him.... Darcy is a bit twisted, Elizabeth is young, pretty, energetic and oblivious. Perfect.
oooooooo looks good never knew about this version before. i think they should start repeating them on tv or something so that moe and more people can know about them!
i dont think they chose the correct sort of character for elizabeth she reminds me more of jane. but i can also see that she and mr.darcy go well together and that she will deffinately grow on me!! she looks to be a good acter :)
Yes Lady C is a real terror here, & I thought Kitty was a real hoot too, trying to make eyes at Bingley! The revelation of the elopement too was better done with Lizzie sobbing rather than 1995 barely squeezing out a tear & the meeting at Pem, even tho I thought Darcy looked a bit scary - I think it was the makeup! 95 Mrs Bennet overdone, she irritated me no end & was disappointed with 2nd proposal in 95. Please don't attack me all you 95 fans! Loved Colin!
Loved this version. Dary a bit sitff but thaws out eventually. 2nd proposal scene so much more satisfying than 1995 without being untrue to book. Lizzie is brill much more likeable than the others. A 1980's budget unfortunately. My fav version. Some scenes v v funny with Mr & Mrs Bennet. Not keen on Jane as an actress though.
Agree, except the Jane comment. And what about the confrontation between Lady C and Lizzie, in the 1979 version, Lady C is really terrifying in the 1995 she is simply a weak old woman. Mrs Bennet in the 1995 version is completely miscast. Oh, yes, I really did like Caroline Bingley in the 1979 version what a nasty creature.
It was great... thank you for uploading this... I always wanted to see a few clips of the Pride and Prejudice (1980) and could never find a video. Thank you!
bellissimo video complimenti.adoro orgoglio e pregiudizio ma la mia versione preferita e quella originale di greeer garson e laurence olivier.alessandro.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes Keira must be such a bad actress, that's why she's paid millions and you are paid what?? Thousands of women love the Matthew and Keira version over any other. All these other videos and actors just do not compare.
This is an awesome video. Makes me want to see this version of Pride and Prejudice even more. Its one of my favorites. You did the video beautifully and the lyrics went well with what was happening in the movie. Wonderful!!!
Feel like I need to watch this series too. Darcy looks like I pictured him from the book. Elisabeth ... looks a bit too naive for her character. But I judge only by this clip.
I really think that this is the best Youtube video on Pride and Prejudice or on Jane Austen at all. I had seen many of them, but this is the only one that I favourited and viewed several times
It is a very lucky mixture of sceenes, musik and everything. I used to consider David Rintoul a little stiff. But you take this stiffness from him and make him perfect.
The last time I saw this was in 1980 and loved it. I was 22 and thought Mr. Darcy the handsomest man I'd ever seen. I made the man who would be my first ex-husband watch the last episode with me (pre VCR) and had to explain that when we walk in and see Jane and Mr. Bingley touching that surely meant a wedding was coming! That was the first and probably the last period drama we ever watched together! Thank you so much for posting this.
This was the first P&P I ever saw, too. I remember that Darcy didn't crack a smile until the very, very end--when Elizabeth accepted his proposal. And when he did--whoa!
This P&P version is the very first Jane Austen adaption I ever saw, back early 80's and I've been hooked to JA and period films since. Thanks for posting.
I totally agree that this 80's version doesn't get enough credit! I grew up on this version! I was only introduced to the 95 version 2 years ago...and coming from a stalwart Jane Austin fan, the 05 version could have seriously stuck to the book more...I mean come on! Don't ruin a classic!
Thanks to ctslpt and caritanj for your replies to my comment. I managed to find Part One of the adaptation. It goes up until Jane and Lizzy return to Longbourn from Netherfield. Can't seem to find the rest of it. :-( :-( I think Lizzy is played very well by Elizabeth Garvie and it is very faithful to book.
I like, I like. Thanks for the video, ctslpt. I just watched it twice in a row. I love P&P, so I love any adaptation really. Unfortunately, haven't seen this one yet, been searching high and low on here for it, but can only manage to find music videos. I like the look of Elizabeth in this adaptation. Just wondering at 2:48, I'm guessing Lizzy has received letter from Jane re: Wickham and Lydia. Is she running to Pemberley or Lambton? Darcy being there when she arrives just confused me.
Hi LisMaree! Lizzy's running to Pemberley because her aunt and uncle were there on Darcy's invitation, and yup she's holding Jane's letter. This miniseries is truest to the book of all the adaptations out there.
YAY! I am so glad that someone's made a P&P '80 video! It's the first version I saw, and you're right—it's EXTREMELY close to the book. I also think that David Rintoul and Elizabeth Garvie are wonderful. Great video.
thanks you. this version is also my favorite. (i have seen 3). because not only are the 2 main characters good, in general the supporting actors are better than the 1996 as well; esp. Mr. Colins, he's just a hoot. :-) also Mrs. Bennet is better. less over the top.
I have to admit I did not know that this series existed, shame on me.
But it looks as if it is just as nice as the one from 1995 (which I like way better than the movie btw). So, out shopping for this one on DVD as well :-)
Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention and for making such a great musicvid. from it :-)
my internet connection is too slow, and besides, I think all P&P lovers should get a copy of the DVD for keeps. the music vid I posted here is sort of a teaser to get others interested in this version, cuz it is very much overshadowed by the newer ones.
Yes, buy the DVD, people! It's not very expensive and is well worth it. This is a great version of P&P. You just have to throw aside all preconceived ideas you picked up from the 1995 and 2005 versions, and enjoy the 1980 version for its own merits.
I have been searching for a long time but there is no DVD but only video tapes(I already have) for the P&P 1980 version. Some idea where one can get it? I even went to BBC shop in LON!!!
I tried to reply before, and either YouTube is malfunctioning, or the post will show up soon.
Anyway, Amazon dot com and Amazon co uk have the Region One version of this DVD. It's not expensive. If you are not in Region One territory, get a Region-free DVD player or play it on your computer's DVD drive, using VLC Player.
Really appreciate your reply and I have already bought the DVD through Amazon. For me 1980's version is my favorite version. Many thanks to you I will have a good time during Christmas holidays. Wish you all the best in 2008. Is Elvira your name? My name is Anna, comes from Taiwan and have been living in Austria since 1990.
After all these years, this is still my favorite P&P. I love pretty much everything about it. Rintoul's Darcy is exactly the way I'd pictured him from the book -- arrogant and mysterious. Austen doesn't tell us much about him, and neither does this version. No, it's not perfect, but no version is.
Many thanks to everyone who watched/rated/commented. This version is also my favorite, though the others would have made Jane Austen proud too. I'm sorry I won't be making another vid like this, but I hope you'll enjoy this one and watch the series, if you haven't already!
Thank you for such a lovely video. I liked all three versions of Pride and Prejudice that I have seen (1980, 1995, and 2005), but the 1980 adaptation holds a special place in my heart.
Love this version. Thought Mrs Gardener was much more like the book in this version. She was very insipid in the 2005. Did this for Inter cert at school and we kept rewinding the bit at the end where he smiles!!!

Very nice video - thanks for putting this together! Haha, I just love David Rintoul's hair - I think he's the only curly-haired Darcy we've had. :-)

You made me want to watch this version. Blonde, blue eyed Lizzy, tht's different

thanks

For me, this is the definitive adapation of P&P. Garvie and Rintoul are perfect! Thanks for the beautiful video.

Best acting ever. Darcy and Elisabet are excellent here. KK is a very bad actress.
cathylikesmusic 3 years ago 7
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Yes Keira must be such a bad actress, that's why she's paid millions and you are paid what?? Thousands of women love the Matthew and Keira version over any other. All these other videos and actors just do not compare.
blossy7 3 years ago
I don't think Keira is such a horrible actress. But I agree with you - Darcy and Elizabeth in this version are wonderful!
TheEditrix92 3 years ago
in my opinion no greater love story ever written!! good job on the vid :)

that darcy's not half bad,but the ultimate mr darcy will always be colin firth

totaly agree!
ArwenUndomiel87 3 years ago
Yeah. . . I'm actually more of a Matthew MacFadyen fan, though I think my favourite Mr. Darcy would have to be Elliot Cowan from Lost in Austen. :D
TheEditrix92 3 years ago
he wasn't half bad either...:)

i've never heard of this version before. i'd love to see it if anyone knows where i can find it?

This Elizabeth is a tas weird. I'm a blonde but I really can't imagine her as a blonde.

This is an awesome video. Makes me want to see this version of Pride and Prejudice even more. Its one of my favorites. You did the video beautifully and the lyrics went well with what was happening in the movie. Wonderful!!!
Marqaisa 3 years ago
This was the best Elizabeth, best Mr. and Mrs. Bennett and truly the best Mr. Collins. Felt most like the book.
lolbox123 3 years ago 3
Feel like I need to watch this series too. Darcy looks like I pictured him from the book. Elisabeth ... looks a bit too naive for her character. But I judge only by this clip.
Nothing compares to the book, of course.
dAvrilthebear 3 years ago
I've not seen this version of P&P, but the video is awesome.
Not keen on Elizabeth's "blonde" hair either. Looks to be ash blonde.
1EleanorRigby 3 years ago
she's not blonde
I didn't like Darcy in this version. His voice annoyed me more than his stiffness. But Garvie is the closest to the novel Elizabeth's wit!!!
ROSEYROSE12 3 years ago
Great clip...though I'm not sure I like Elizabeth as a blond. Just a note.
marchinbndgeek25 3 years ago 2
Woah woah woah. He looks ridiculously handsome in that get-up.
saramarinara 3 years ago 3
Best film versoin ever. Elizabeth's singing scenes were great, I wonder if she was really singing...(Elizabeth Garvie)
The song seemed a little somber though for what is a relatively lighthearted story.
ShawDAMAN 3 years ago 2
It's interesting that you find it a lighthearted story. I would consider something like JA's 'Emma' lighthearted, but not P & P.
LisMaree 3 years ago 2
This is amazing! I am so glad you used clips from the 1980 version. It is my favorite. beautiful song too. Jans Austen Rules :)
Quebeth1 3 years ago 2
I love the one with collin firth..... he is so dreamy as mr darcy......
kieghacat 3 years ago 3
I really think that this is the best Youtube video on Pride and Prejudice or on Jane Austen at all. I had seen many of them, but this is the only one that I favourited and viewed several times
It is a very lucky mixture of sceenes, musik and everything. I used to consider David Rintoul a little stiff. But you take this stiffness from him and make him perfect.
Kybeline 3 years ago
I like the costumes alot better than the other versions. I would really like to see this one. Thanks for posting it.

Thank you so much for posting this.
cledak 4 years ago 2
He hasn't aged very well. He was in Horatio Hornblower as the doctor. This was the best version of the story.
diggiemac 3 years ago 2
This was the first P&P I ever saw, too. I remember that Darcy didn't crack a smile until the very, very end--when Elizabeth accepted his proposal. And when he did--whoa!
unowho5000 4 years ago 3
This P&P version is the very first Jane Austen adaption I ever saw, back early 80's and I've been hooked to JA and period films since. Thanks for posting.

Wow this is the first i see this version....how many versione are there?

About a billion. There's even one with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a silent version, too.

Sorry...my hand slipped when typing Austen's name...forgive me Jane fans out there!
elendili7 4 years ago
I totally agree that this 80's version doesn't get enough credit! I grew up on this version! I was only introduced to the 95 version 2 years ago...and coming from a stalwart Jane Austin fan, the 05 version could have seriously stuck to the book more...I mean come on! Don't ruin a classic!
Thank you for posting this vid!

the 05 one is better

Thanks to ctslpt and caritanj for your replies to my comment. I managed to find Part One of the adaptation. It goes up until Jane and Lizzy return to Longbourn from Netherfield. Can't seem to find the rest of it. :-( :-( I think Lizzy is played very well by Elizabeth Garvie and it is very faithful to book.
LisMaree 4 years ago
I like, I like. Thanks for the video, ctslpt. I just watched it twice in a row. I love P&P, so I love any adaptation really. Unfortunately, haven't seen this one yet, been searching high and low on here for it, but can only manage to find music videos. I like the look of Elizabeth in this adaptation. Just wondering at 2:48, I'm guessing Lizzy has received letter from Jane re: Wickham and Lydia. Is she running to Pemberley or Lambton? Darcy being there when she arrives just confused me.
LisMaree 4 years ago
Hi LisMaree! Lizzy's running to Pemberley because her aunt and uncle were there on Darcy's invitation, and yup she's holding Jane's letter. This miniseries is truest to the book of all the adaptations out there.
ctslpt 4 years ago
But they was on a walk to the church an Mr. Darcy comes to Lambont..?? Not after the book at all.
Anyways wish I get the chance to watch this sometime with better quality than youtube has.

YAY! I am so glad that someone's made a P&P '80 video! It's the first version I saw, and you're right—it's EXTREMELY close to the book. I also think that David Rintoul and Elizabeth Garvie are wonderful. Great video.
elvirasweeney 4 years ago 2
Totally agree!!! ;-))
I was 14 when I saw this version in '80 and fell in love with it instantly and with all of Jane A.'s work that is.
Love it!

Dont think the music matches the video well. It should be more romantic. But I guess thats a taste thing...
Bebita2711 4 years ago
thanks you. this version is also my favorite. (i have seen 3). because not only are the 2 main characters good, in general the supporting actors are better than the 1996 as well; esp. Mr. Colins, he's just a hoot. :-) also Mrs. Bennet is better. less over the top.
gee1996 4 years ago
Great idea! I was 12, when I first saw this movie and it made me "jane austen's fan". I still think this is the best version ever :)
ZBELZUM 4 years ago
I'm so glad you're willing to give it a chance, and so honored that you like the video!
ctslpt 4 years ago
I have to admit I did not know that this series existed, shame on me.
But it looks as if it is just as nice as the one from 1995 (which I like way better than the movie btw). So, out shopping for this one on DVD as well :-)
Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention and for making such a great musicvid. from it :-)
fruktkompott 4 years ago
agree with all saying this is the best version. ctslpt, why don't you upload the whole clips? thanks.
tiosatuh 4 years ago
my internet connection is too slow, and besides, I think all P&P lovers should get a copy of the DVD for keeps. the music vid I posted here is sort of a teaser to get others interested in this version, cuz it is very much overshadowed by the newer ones.
ctslpt 4 years ago
Yes, buy the DVD, people! It's not very expensive and is well worth it. This is a great version of P&P. You just have to throw aside all preconceived ideas you picked up from the 1995 and 2005 versions, and enjoy the 1980 version for its own merits.
elvirasweeney 4 years ago
I have been searching for a long time but there is no DVD but only video tapes(I already have) for the P&P 1980 version. Some idea where one can get it? I even went to BBC shop in LON!!!
27aug1968 4 years ago
I tried to reply before, and either YouTube is malfunctioning, or the post will show up soon.
Anyway, Amazon dot com and Amazon co uk have the Region One version of this DVD. It's not expensive. If you are not in Region One territory, get a Region-free DVD player or play it on your computer's DVD drive, using VLC Player.
elvirasweeney 4 years ago
Really appreciate your reply and I have already bought the DVD through Amazon. For me 1980's version is my favorite version. Many thanks to you I will have a good time during Christmas holidays. Wish you all the best in 2008. Is Elvira your name? My name is Anna, comes from Taiwan and have been living in Austria since 1990.
27aug1968 4 years ago
After all these years, this is still my favorite P&P. I love pretty much everything about it. Rintoul's Darcy is exactly the way I'd pictured him from the book -- arrogant and mysterious. Austen doesn't tell us much about him, and neither does this version. No, it's not perfect, but no version is.

david rintoul=the best mr. darcy hands down

i personally like this mr. darcy better than the other mr. darcy. don't get me wrong, colin and matthew did a good job, but david played it better.

My fav scenes was the First proposal scene an when Darcys Aunt called on Lizzies Home.
