@mohamedgna This globe is slightly warm to the touch near the top when it is left on at the highest power settings. The upward motion of the tendrils are electric arcs that create and ride warm areas they create, and the electrical resistance is less for hot gas than for cold gas. The glass is Pyrex, so a small bit of heat is not a problem.
@Clemsonkilz Yes. Green is the most pronounced color, but the plasma also shows areas that are red-orange. blue, and green. The manufacturer's shorthard for this mix is RBG, for red, blue and green.
Two options: Another YouTube video poster with UserID Lightningman2 works with and is in contact with the artist Bill Parker. Tell him you want to buy a Bill Parker 12 inch "Elegance of Becoming". Or you can look up William P. Parker using AT&T Directory Information (residential listings) for Waitsfield, Vermont and ask him yourself. The cost is about $3K USD. There are cheaper copies of this mixture, but only Bill Parker can make one with this much sharp detail and colors.
@40kDakota Bill Parker is the artist who created a large number of different editions (color schemes and special patterns) of 12 inch and larger plasma sculptures and who licensed them to be manufactured starting in 1983. He was the first person to develop a way to create multiple copies of the plasma images instead of one-of-a-kind sculptures that could not be easily duplicated.
@noah1786 The song is called "Harmonic Voltage" from the Animusic CD. It's from a CD compilation of music used in the Animusic video DVD. I bought the CD from Amazon-dot-com.
@SovereignName It's a leftover from a Light Sculpture Limited Edition of 375 called "The Elegance of Becoming" that sold out in1985 that came to me secondhand. The artist is Bill (William P.) Parker, and I have been told can still make these. I believe he lives in Waitsfield, VT. (I think he is listed in the telephone directory) He sells them for about $3K USD)
@ATOMICWATERSTUDIOS The fast globes are filled with higher pressure gas and the slower ones are filled at a lower pressure. Also the more xenon, krypton or argon in a gas mix the more it will tend to move around. The slower globes are mostly neon or other gases that tend to create a plasma that "floats" around more slowly.
@emodemon11 All you would see would be a very small purple corona discharge at or inside the electrode surface as the high voltage discharged into the air with a soft hissing sound at the end of the high voltage wire. These globes require a special gas mixture and a partial vacuum for the lightshow to work.
Hey. i like the music that's playing. can anyone identify the artist, and song title of this song? I think it might be tangerine dream, but i'm not sure of the songtitle. it rocks.
Tricky. This formula hasn't been made in a 12 inch globe since 1984 when the edition sold out. Surviving specimens in hands of private collectors. 5 inch versions of this Parker gas mix selling on eBay as "portable plasma ball".
That edition sold out in 1985, and the Elegance of Becoming edition has not been advertised for public sale since then. I bought one in 1986 for $1,200 from a private collector, and another recently from another owner who did not want his for another $1,200. I recently saw an online art gallery listing Bill Parker sculptures for $4,000.
"Multicolored" means having many or several colors at once. (multiple colors) Shades of red, blue and green in this case. (I needed a variation for the video title, and it sounded better than "red, green and blue plasma globe#2")
Nope. Pure krypton always fires up nearly pure white. My best guess is this one is mostly neon+xenon+unknown halogen color additive, and possibly a 4th secret component known only to Bill Parker. Check my other videos for other green and white plasma globes. I tried to make one like this with a neon+xenon+krypton mix and it came out red/orange, white and blue
I'm not sure, because it's not my formula, but if I mix very pure neon with a few percent of xenon and add a trace of iodine vapor at exactly the right total pressure I can get a globe that looks something like this. My best theory is that at exactly the right conditions some kind of 3-body collision creates a situation where red, green and blue emitting species are all energized at the same time. The green appears to be from a neon emission line at 532nm or a xenon line very close to it.
The green plasma globes have always been my favorite. My "Bright Green Plasma Ball" video is this same globe running at a different power supply frequency and the green color becomes even more intense.
I've ONLY seen a green plasma once or twice (those I saw were both 12"...by JF & WS). The green is a beautiful hue since people rarely see it in plasmas. Green (not teal!) is the hardest to stabilize at the time of creation. Just one fraction of impurity triggers a gradual breakdown. That's why so few artists risk making them. Yours is perfect! Take care of that one!!! VERY nice!
is it hot?
