Totally agree. The joker is a brilliant antagonist. Heath Ledger's portrayal was extremely overrated though, kind of ironic that his most famous line from the movie was "Why so serious?"All I kept thinking was when did the joker become so emotional and boring. Bale also did an astonishingly poor job as batman the lisp totally threw me off and as far as being complex, I just didn't see it. But the movies made money which in this day and age is more important than telling a good & accurate story.
@Susi2584 I suppose if you haven't read the comics or watched any of the original WB cartoons or the animated movies featuring the Joker, especially when voiced by Mark Hamill, you might think Ledger was underrated but I have read the comics and watched the movies. I don't think he did the character justice. He wasn't bad, just not what i think the Joker was meant to be. I guess though that also falls on the writers not just the actor.
@Kajujuu but Christophen Nolan wanted The Joker to be a person that would exist in the real world you know more realistic...also Ledger came up with the make up...but hey everybody has their opinion :D
@Susi2584 That's the point, the Joker doesn't exist in the real world, he's a fictional character. The beauty of the Joker is that there's no particular reason he's the way he is, trying to make him more human and relatable kinda ruins the whole point of him being the insane criminal mastermind. Anyway to each his own. Personally I think Nolan's entire series wasn't all that, it had a good budget and that showed but thats about it.
I think they ripped off the Glasgow grin from Ichi The Killer. Nowhere in the comics or previous films did the joker have a cut mouth. He also wasn't a sadomasochist who loved to torture his victims with knifes. Your right though the Joker stole that movie because Batman was a grunting asshole that nobody could relate to. Christian bale is awesome but he cant play a good Batman in my opinion.
I think the Ledger Joker was a lot less fun than the Nicholson Joker. not to mention, we don't really know his origin very well, we don't know his real name (apparently it's not Jack Napier), and we don't know where he came from and why he decided to put make-up on. The Nicholson Joker, fell into tub of chemicals and you almost feel for him. (almost).
Couldn't agree with you more. Even though I consider Ledger's version ''my Joker'' I do think his performance has become insanely overrated. It annoys me that people overlook Christian Bale in the film because he actually puts in a very complex and understated performance. He nailed the Bruce Wayne / Batman character. Plus when you look at their career's as a whole, Bale is overall a much better actor than Ledger.
People aren't focusing on Christian Bale because Michael Keaton played a better Batman over a decade before. Heath Ledger got the attention he did because by accepting a role played by one of the greatest actors of the 20th century, and exceeding his predecessor.
...and for your argument as far as "the dark knight" . The movie is still based around batman but, it is because of the joker that batman became the dark knight right? and it's because of the joker that two face came to be right? The first movie was all about batman, but it can't JUST always be about batman, there are always external factors that make him take the decisions he takes. For one, I'm glad a movie focused on the external factors more than only the main character.
people are not focusing on the joker because the actor is dead, they focused on him because of the performance, Now sure the character wasn't as funny as in the cartoons but the intensity and cleverness showed. Besides, Batman has multiple movies, the joker only has one! Batman costumes have always been and will always be in stores but the joker had to have a time to shine for 15 minutes of fame and then we'll go on to the next batman villain.
I didn't see any intensity, cleverness, or anything. I think anybody who thinks Heath Ledger is a great actor is an athiest. Because talent is a gift from God, and he has no screen presence, nothing. He's not even good looking. He's an athiests' actor. Athiests like clever people. That's it. They can't see talent though.
@1Thompsonmusic You have presented a very interesting if perhaps oversimplified idea. If I may add:
The hoopla surrounding Ledger's Joker has nothing at all to do with the performance, and everything to do with his death and people who refuse to break a subject down and analyze it, and instead join an emotion-based feelgood bandwagon--"Oops, Ledger died, that means automatic Oscar or it's not FAIR". Dying can magically change a previous performance from bad to good, or good to great.
The world is becoming too boring. We need more Sylvester Stallones and Arnies. Not boring Ledgers. You're paragraph by the way is also boring. Very very boring.
Lol, The Joker isn't supposed to be a violent and murderous thing? That statement makes your video an epic fail in itself. No, I'm not going to call you stupid. In fact, you are right in a certain aspect....That aspect being that the movie got more attention due to Heath's death. When people get together, they have a sick-minded, collectivised obsession with death. But that doesn't mean that Heath's performance was overrated. He played a creepy, sadistic fuck down to the bone. Stop the hatred.
I think it's because the Joker in TDK was a more interesting character to focus on. Batman/Bruce Wayne whatever you wanna call him, wasn't mentally disturbed, had motives, and had limits. The Joker on the other hand, the way his disturbed mind worked- he still reached his goal. It's kind of impressive- considering that he's insane. Because a lot of people wouldn't expect a wacky MESSED up as heck guy in CLOWN MAKE UP to almost destroy Gotham single-handedly.
THANK YOU!!!!! Though the Joker kicks ass, almost every performance in the film was just as strong as his. However, Christian Bale can't act, and Batman is the most boring character in Batman fiction. Still you are right, even if you have small bits of difficultiy conveying the actual point. =-)
Although, I do disagree with a couple of your points;
I do think that Heath Ledger did an exceptional job as the Joker, and, also, Christian Bale s one of the best actors I know of. He conveys emotion very well.
I agree that Batman isn't his best character, though...
finally someone who agrees that the joker is overrated! its not that i dont like the joker but seriously, whats so amazing about him? though i do think romero was an awesome joker.
the Joker is just a really cool character. its a fad, and to be honest it wasnt Heath Ledgers death that made him popular, it was just that he played a great role in the movie and showed a different side of the world that people enjoyed peeking into. He was a great actor and people loved the character for that. the hot topic stuff is a fad though, get over "All about the music" my ass. more like "All about anything thats going on this week"
i kinda screwed up in what i wrote.......anyways hes just the joker. i've loved him since i was a kid.....i grew up with batman. i love them both but the joker just throws a twist to the same old bat catching criminals....he also adds humor. and yes the joker has gotten more attention because of heaths death, but the attention is not all because of the death but also because its the joker.....i didnt grow up in the 80s but from what my family has told me jack nicholsons joker was just as popular
the joker is one of the all time greatest villains.....and everyone loves batman but the joker is a fan loved character. and ive seen plenty of batman shirts in hot topic.......the joker was the main villain and in TDK and thats why he gets all the attention.....batman is the hero and he has to face new things every movie...joker=new.
and as for your "grin," they were making the joker more realistic and not fall into a vat of chemicals....
You look like some kind of Hipster emo crossbreed.
