When I was growing up, any official English source you used would have it spelled Koran. This change was probably the result of one professor's efforts to put himself on the map -- like the one who came up with Ebonics or the one who insists that we should pronounce centimeter "sontimeter." Anyway, who cares.

Often, we see people trying to distinguish themselves in a profession by arbitrarily promoting some interpretation, policy, or pronunciation, etc. In the late 70's, somebody came up with this "revised and corrected" pronunciation of centimeter. I remember a principal who became somewhat of a celebrity for encouraging students to run in the hallways. (Education seems to be the most vulnerable to this kind of crap.)
