Was in a mental hospital for five days & he absolutely nails what it is like. No one wants to visit you & you get bored out of your mind either staying in bed, going to meaningless therapy & choking down tasteless food. I know, Elliott. I know.
all elliott arguing aside...if you've EVER spent any time at all in a STATE (state, to hospital with a cafeteria and activity days) mental hospital, it will bring tears to your eyes every time you hear it.
I know saying Elliott sometimes sounds beatle-ish could be taken as putting him down as an unoriginal author, but forget about that: I mean it in a mild way. As someone who wants to state that he shares that place-to-be feeling you experience when you hear a melody composed by someone with a nearly magic gift.
"If it's your decision to be open about yourself, be careful or else."
I just learned how true this is recently. People will attack and then seek to force conformity on people in some incredibly cruel and hearless ways when one is different enough. They truly believe they are "helping" you by shunning and questioning your mental stability if you don't think, feel, or dress the way they do. (Just as a few examples.) Even if you aren't harming yourself or anyone else in any way shape or form.
No idea why people are always comparing Elliott Smith to The Beatles. In my opinion, Elliott's music and lyrical quality is worlds ahead of anything that Lennon or McCartney ever did or could have come up with.
This song got me through one of the worst x's of my life. Listened to everyday for a month of a bad x at College. Still listen to this song to remember who I am and can be. He is a magificiant psychiatrist shame that he is no long with us. Now he is at peace let us remember !!!
As far as I'm concerned, one of the best songs ever written about loneliness. The lyrics are so tightly pack, and each metaphor hits dead on. The words could certainly stand on they're own as great poetry, but the music adds so much in addition that it would be a shame. This is true talent right here, what a shame that he died young.
Damn! How many tattoos did you have Elliott? :) I love your voice, you have such a beautiful soul. The world misses you, thank you so much for your art and expression.
He was an AMAZING songwriter, his songs are really rich and complex... it's not just 3 chords repeated over and over. By the way this song is freaking hard to learn !

it gets better with each listen
a rare individual who actually deserved his recognition (celebrity is not the same thing as recognition).
This song deserves the highest commendation one can give to a song. It is true.
