I started singing this in English class out loud during this big test at the end of the year and everyone was laughing as i started to dance but i was just day dreaming XD it was fun though
i love this scene, makes me feel like jumping onto my english teachers desk and start tap dancing. lol. of course to do that in real life would make you look crazy.
Oh, I love this scene!!! I think I saw this movie several times a week growing up..! hehe, when everybody else had celebrity crushes like Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto, I had a huge crush on Gene Kelly. My husband even looks like him:P Aaaand he's a dancer too..! :-o
My wife got me into this movie when I was 20 and we started dating. This movie *is* timeless... just a stone cold classic from a simpler time, but no less endearing, intelligent, or fun. This scene is just amazing on a lot of levels- they just had *fun* with it.
I'm 16 and I've known about these for most of my life. I was raised by an opera singer, so I got the brunt of the older music and movies. It's wonderful.
The movies and the songs and dances were very intelligent as well as intellectual. Not at all like the crap,Rap,and silly female pop singers of today who barely finished high school. They can barely speak English.
Im just wondering how old you people who are posting positive comments on this video because I'm 14 bout to go into highschool. and basically everybody thinks im a freak for loving this move just cuz its old
I'm -thirteen- and I love this movie! It's so amazing to NOT love it!! Don't listen to what other people say, because they can't control you or your likes/dislikes.
If anyone can find a better musical number in all of movies, I'd like to fucking see it. Seriously - it gets everything perfect.
The two of them have a major jazz element to it, in that they look like they're genuinely having fun and screwing around, slightly off time - it takes a lot of talent to make that look so good, take after take.
It's ffset by the diction teacher, who plays the part of Reality - he's as bewildered as anyone would be if this happened. And that makes it even more fun.
I don't think they were being mean the man, I think they were just bored in class... who hasn't done some silly stuff our of boredom during class with their best friend? That's kindof why I think this is such a cute scene... even though both Gene and Donald are adults, they're being very playful...
And the old man seems kindof to be enjoying it when they start dancing...
Yes, it bothers me that they treat the inoffensive old man so disrespectfully. The dance number is great, though. But they need a lesson in manners more than in diction. :-)
I don't think there's any ground for comparission really, both movies are so different, made and watched for entirely different reasons, and feature entirely different styles.
Ah my favorite musical ever. I wish i knew how to dance like Gene Kelley. Can't have it all though. heh wish we had talent like that in our moveis today.
your are absolutely right! it would be so awesome if they were still alive and this young so that we can see even more of their amazing dancing. i love Gene and Donald together! : )
All time favorite musical! Now that I've said that, time to be critical. Donald may have been as good as Gene eventually, I'm not sure, but he's definitely not as good here. He constantly looks down at his feet, trying to keep up with Gene's steps, and Gene hardly ever does. Also, notice how they're not wearing tap shoes? All the tap sounds you hear have been recorded in a separate studio and dubbed over the original audio.
... (my post contd.) Gene was notorious for adding extra taps in the audio that you don't actually see them doing on video -- listen and watch closely and you can tell! So, in reality what you're seeing isn't as difficult to perform as what you're hearing Gene do in the audio, so, who really knows the skill level of Donald? Maybe they had to make the steps easier so he could keep up... ?
Totally agree. O'Conner is accomplished, no doubt, but when you watch their solos Gene demonstrates a sense of control over every part of his body. It allows for both a fluidity and precision that O'Conner lacks. It's the difference between very good and great.
Donald O'Connor was a very underrated dancer. This clip shows that he could dance just as well as Gene and Fred. It was no small task to partner with Kelly but O'Connor matched him step for step....not to shabby for a self taught dancer.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT!! I used to be a tap dancer in my young days. Donald O is really, really excellent. As good...dare I say it....maybe even better than Gene. It's just that Gene is so hot to look at. Donny just to thin to be a leading man.
Ok...I admit I agree with you to a certain degree...But Donny was not better then Gene..Sorry, Gene and Fred will always be the all time BEST tap dancers of there time..Nobody will ever replace them..Or be able to make history as they did..
ah... this song is where I got my very first email... my nickname's been Moses for longer than I can remember and my parents agree. So... when I finally convinced my dad it'd be ok for me to have an email, he signed me up as roses4toeses. XD Sadly, I've changed it since then because of spam... but that was such a fun email address. any time you get to break into a SIR song as explanation of something, it's fun and great. XD
