Although I've 'upgraded' to a Cayman S, which is hassle free, my old 944S2 Cabrio is a better drivers car. If you can live with its over engineered, tedious faults, its a bargain.
I used to have a 944S2. It was an amazing car that was very easy to drive, not the mention the gas mileage wasn't half bad. The only problem was the maintenance was pricy and needed to be done often.
For someone like Clarkson who normally doesnt like Porsches, I was pleased to hear him speak highly of my beloved 951's. The 951 is an outstanding sleeper. 951 with 400 to the wheels is nearly untouchable in most situations, with a proper driver.
The Porsche 944 Turbo is an amazing car. The S2 version is pretty good as well. I love its looks(with pop-up headlamps). I wish Porsche would make it again.
I love both the Porsche 928 and 944. Never really got on with the 911, although I respect the later models abilities.
@alphabetaxenonzzzcat I work at a Ferrari dealership and I recently bought a 944 Turbo that I intended to convert into a racecar. It is amazingly quick this car, mine has a wastegate with a stronger spring, shipped and different sparkplugs for a total cost of around 500 dollars and it now has around 270 hp. It does feel as fast as a 400+ hp Ferrari though, and it barely costs anything. It is an EXTREMELY underrated car this.
@Lillie1986 As a 'driver's car' the Porsche 944 is right up there. It has superb balance(engine at the front and gearbox at the back help). The engines are really good as well. Granted that with the turbo, there is some turbo lag, but still it shifts.
@haydenlewisd Me to, theres absolutely no downsides to that car. Its fast, handles superbly, easy to tune if you want to, semi easy to work on. Much cheaper both the car and parts than equal performing cars.
@alphabetaxenonzzzcat they just were many years up their time when they came out. the 928 and the 944 are those cars i definately i want to own within the next few years and hey. at least theyre not as expensive as all the 911 and 993 models ;)
@MagicAyrtonforever to each his own but I hate modern Porsches. I honestly do not want one at all. They're fast and all but they look like vw bugs or something. Just boring, uninspired, and not very cool. For porsche money, almost anything else is better looking.
@MagicAyrtonforever Don´t get me wrong - but you will not pay for a quality car, but rather have a "...I wish a had the money for a real sportscar, but I don't " - with a family car logo on the steering wheel ;-)
Your Nissan will not last for 35 years - the Porsche will...
@maikeru01 Just to inform you. There is such a thing as "design icon" and "style". Plus, the Porsche was here before the beetle. So if anything, the beetle is a "Porsche Look Alike" ;-)
@claus964 sorry, but no. Ferdinand Porsche was comissioned to build a car for the people. A so called Volkswagen. It was Hitlers idea that everybody should have a car. Anyways, Porsche then built what we know as the first beetle. After the war Ferdinand and his son Ferry founded a car company and used their surname as a brandname => Porsche. By the way, the beetle was the platform for the first Porsche 356 and it was Ferry who designed the first 911. Also, Ferdinand came from Vienna, Austria.
Typical shit top gear start by testing a car then screw it up by doing stupid things to put put the focus on themselfs and not the car.

i love the pop up lights...
just think about a modern car that would come with them...
a big FU to all the small bullshit these days...
and the big rear window...awesome...
the new rear lights of the 911 are so tiny-.-
and they make todays car always longer and longer...
someday the 911 will be as long as a S-Class

@alphabetaxenonzzzcat, The only existing Porsche is the 911. 924s, 944s, even 918s are uncool.

@Vaicurious uh, right. ever consider that some people just enjoy driving? I think that's a very childish generalization.
