Off to a good start but wanders off into the woods. Suggestion: start with two clips, trim them, join them and print. Then? Cut! Leave your audience with something to show for their time: how to make video from two clips. In general, state what it is you propose to teach your audience, teach them, then summarize what you've taught. Stay the course. If it isn't relevant, leave it for another time.
I really like and dislike at the same time all those separate windows for the interface, but i guess u can rearrange them as u do n any of the adobe interfaces as well ... see this as a very powerful tool for quick n very professional looking gigs when ur not in ur station n even for those that are starting video editing ... so hurray for free source!!
I am a student film maker thinking about making the switch from final cut to lightworks when it is released for mac dec 19. I just have a couple questions though...
1. is it completely free? do you have to pay for, say licenses, etc?
2. will it always be free, or is this just the beta for a future expensive software?
3. do you recommend it as opposed to other editors?
I love this video...especially the speed of it..quick and to the point. If I miss something, I can just back up...when tutorials go too slow, I can't do anything about it because I don't know what I'll miss! Love this!
Nice an' speedy. I haven't done much video editng before, so this was new stuff, and I lost you a bit half way through the video, but I liked the fast overview you gave us. Either you must have practiced beforehand or you are extremely skilled at 'winging it'. :)
@GAMINGMANIA100 you need to convert your videos into a supported format which are listed here: lightworksbeta[dot]com/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=19&id=1277&Itemid=269#4743
When i import my video and its in the trimmer thingy i try and play it and it only plays for like 5 seconds then it gets all laggy and stops... any advice? please help!!!
I too love the speed of this tutorial, just as I prefer to read fine print on one page rather than large print on ten. I'm sure I'll watch again and again as I'm new to Lightworks. Thanks!
Hi I just wanted to add my vote for tutorials that are a bit faster. I'm often frustrated by video tutorials that have people talking too slowly, chatting off-topic and generally not being focussed so this is quite refreshing! If I miss something I can always go back!
I have a problem whenever i import a video. I've made videos in both camtasia and snagit and when I import them into lightworks the video is always sped up and not in sync with the audio. In a 10 minute video the video part ends at about 6 minutes but the audio is fine and goes for the full 10 with blank video after the 6th minute because the video played too fast. Is there some setting i need to change? I'm thinking maybe my fps but I'm fairly sure the videos i want to edit are <24fps . Thanks.
It's clear, fast, nicely explained, maybe too fast for beginners in English - at least for my own, I guess I understood all in 5 minutes instead of drag'n'dropping everything and delete finally 'cause I was fed up. Thanks a lot for this "quick start" video !
Good tutorial, but you are going way too fast, especially because the interface is completely different from almost all the other standard editing programs. Slow the video down so people have a chance to catch up with you! And, please answer your viewers questions in the thread!
@Adnezal i answer as many questions as possible, but many of them are easy for users to solve themselves- by watching my other videos or reading the other answers I have taken the time to write. 15 questions about why the video format doesn't work and 15 answers telling people to download codec packs is boring and serves no purpose. Thanks for the support though. Did you have a specific question I can answer?
Thanks for your efforts, but I can't really follow your tutorial. You're telling me to click here and there, but not really explaining what here and there is or why it's useful.
Sure, thousands of Hollywood movies were made on Avid and Lightworks, but that doesn't mean those programs are intuitive to use.
People had to use those systems for years before easier programs came out, and then when something easier and better came out, they couldn't migrate because they didn't want to learn a new system.
So these dinosaurs stick with their old programs and go around telling people how 'easy' they are to use.
If you are tempted to try this program please be aware that you will face a massive learning curve. This program raises unintuativeness to a new record high. The interface does not look like a video editing program so any previous experience of video editing is useless. The interface starts off virtually empty then fills up with boxes as you flounder around trying to make sense of it. While I guess this is a powerfull program all I want to do is trim an AVI clip down.
why when i click on start after picking my files, it says "warning!! unable to start - there are no material drives attached to the system." what do i do?
All I get is an 'unsupported codec' error. I can't progress any further. I was looking for an alternative to Windows Live Movie Maker, but NOOO, they had to bugger it all.
My God.What alot of arseing around just to import video. I had high hopes for this program but for GODS SAKE! Why not have a timeline like Roxio or Pinnacle and drag and drop. Are programmers these days so damn thick that they cannot grasp the basics of making things quick and easy???? I wish I had have gone into programming - then again, when Windows 3.1 came out I said then that it was complete shite. And so is this program! Oh but thanks for the tutorial dvstudios,
Can you import basic video files or do they have to be from a videocam because I want to use this for editing the gameplays I capture from my game cap card.
Great work guys. I can't believe that this NLE software is FREEE!!!... it just to cost several thousand back in the days. And it was only for off-line editing... and now, here we are, with its beautiful fully customizable User Interface for every body to play arround. And multy format support. It`s just to good to be true... but it is...
Is it normal to take a long time to extract this thing? Mine's still stuck at the first bar after like 5 minutes, and I usually download fi--Whoops, it extracted as I was typing.
Oh well. It look awesome. Vegas is going down....
for someone who used to use vegas i find lightworks far too complicated and way too fidigety to use. it did my head in just trying to add simple stuff like Text. how in gods name do i crete subtitles? or some sort of intro.
Heres the problem I'm having: I imported a 35 minute clip with corresponding audio from my DAW. so I have unsynced audio and video which could be easily synced if i could zoom and drag the video or the audio into place. however since my clip is so long, the only place i can drag while being zoomed in is the middle of the clip.. am i just doing it wrong? probably...
The tutorial was too fast; more precisely: the mouse cursor moved around too much and was difficult to follow, especially once I put the video in full-screen. Also, there was a lot of clicking around besides was the speaker is talking about.
I know it's difficult to record screencasts (I have one up here on YouTube as well), so thanks for your effort and hope you can slow down a bit next time :)
Thanks for making this video. I spent about some time messing with it and was unimpressed and actually frustrated. It is difficult to use unless you know exactly what you are doing and even then its a hassle having to remember all the hidden places for things. The worst part is that it wont accept lots compressed formats, not even from my Cannon camera! The only good thing about LW is that it is free, but you get what you pay for. Ill stick with AVS4YOU, and make the worlds first criticism of LW
Thanks for the video. I am still a bit confused about some parts, but I just need to mess around with it more. This is so much better than using Windows Live Movie Maker, but much more complex.
Very helpful, I downloaded it this morning as started playing with it. This is going to be awesome. I used to use Adobe Premiere 6.0, it doesn't support HD and I can't afford any of the new pro software. Tried Premiere Elements, not to happy with it. Currently using Corel Videostudio X3, it works but crashes a lot. Thanks.
hmm it was quite fast, maybe even too fast, especially for non native english speakers like me! but still thx for your effort. maybe u can make a tutorial for english dummies sometimes!!
@hansknecht haha check out the other tutorial I have (like 16 others) that are slower and more in depth. I cannot offer much in the way of other languages, but if there is a specific one (french, spanish) I might be able to provide a transcript if that helps for a particular video.
Okay so I NEED HELP!!!! I just downloaded Lightworks and i'm fairly new at editing. When I tried to import a video into it, it loads fully but then it exits out of itself autoatically and can't get past that part. :/ I'm wondering if i did something wrong or if my computer is messed up even though it is brand new.. So again, can someone please give me a hand?
@JDMaddiction9 "Lightworks 10.0.4 Public Beta requires 'Matrox VFW' codecs, available as a free download here:"
Did you follow the link on the download page to download the extra codecs you need? Just the first thought to cross my mind. If it's something else I wish you luck.
@JDMaddiction9 I had a similar problem with my new computer last night (you've probably already solved this by now, but for anyone else...) I had already loaded the Matrox codecs, so I did some research and then installed Quicktime, and then (this was key) restarted my computer. Works just fine now. Good luck!
Yeah. So there. I am counting all the money I didn't spend - whee! On stuff I couldn't afford anyway. Great, great, job. I want to learn to talk fast like you bt wtht skpg thgs. hpy fc
@zacdee316 Heh, heh, no problem. Glad you liked it. Lightworks can handle some chroma keying, but I haven't tried it out yet. I will though, thanks for the idea. I should have something posted this weekend mate!
@MansujaChannel can none of you think for yourselves? how about the other 15 lightworks videos that deal with each part of the program seperately? Oh, bet you couldn't find those right?
@dvstudiosproductions Now this I don't understand. You make a video and then when there's some reasonable criticism, you ask why the person didn't watch all the other videos other people made? What is the point of making your video in the first place if there are so many other good videos?
You did this presentation VERY quickly. That's a completely reasonable critique for anyone to make. Talking down to them in response isn't fair on your part.
@DavePerry2012 Hmm, well you see, I made the OTHER videos. And they are much more in depth, which I think I mention in the video. That wasn't reasonable criticism- it covers a lot yes, but you should be able to follow it. And if you need clarification on something, look at my channel for videos on a whole bunch of lightworks stuff. It's broken down into small bits by topic (ie. effects, cutting, importing, capturing, etc) Does that help?
@dvstudiosproductions Ah, ok, well then I misunderstood you if you were talking about your own videos. This one is hard to follow as an introduction, but if you break it down more later then it may be fine. If you always talk as fast as you do in this one, I'll have to run it a few times to get everything, but I appreciate you trying to be thorough. It's a great program and kind of a miracle that it's free.
@Shaunakde Hmm, that's also strange. I apologize- but I'm going to refer you to the VFW codec download or to the Lightworks forums, becuase, they ought to know about these problems with the beta, and then they can fix them! Good luck and let me know if you need any other help...
@Josour17 No problem man, there are a bunch more on the way next week!
Perhaps it has something to do with needing the VFW Codecs installed. I'm not an expert on codecs regretably- I only really use AVCHD and .MOV on my PC. But perhaps if the install doesn't do the trick, checking the Editshare Lightworks forums will yield a favorable result? Best of luck man, thanks for watching the video!
@Josour17 Hmm, yeah I think just installing it is enough. If you post a thread, that might be best on their forum. Other than that, does Lightworks support MPG files? I'm on my laptop which doesn't have lightworks, but perhaps thats worth checking out. You can convert them using a freebie- Super- or something like VideoWrap, which I have the LITE installer for if you'd like, just message me. It works great but the pro version isn't sold anymore.
Thx for the tutorial, it's a good start to the topic. But I have a problem with codecs. Besides the fact that my Lightworks doesn't import mp4-encoded mobile video files, I don't have all the export formats seen in your tut. My export menu like different than yours. Choosing Quicktime I don't have that video/audio box, instead there's a compression button with the only the DV compressions codecs available. Which of Lightworks do you use and do I need Quicktime Pro? Thx a lot if u answer.
@ComancheMan81 Have you tried to downloading and installing the codec pack from the Lightworks website? That could be the answer- its on the LW download page. Otherwise, try updating Quicktime, or reverting to 7.5.5 which seems to help some users... let me know if that helps.
@dvstudiosproductions Do you mean the 'Matrox VFW' codecs? Yeah, I installed these before. Also my Quicktime is the newest version. Thing is, at first I forgot to install Quicktime BEFORE Lightworks. So after Quicktime, I reinstalled Lightworks for reasons of precaution. My assumption is, that Lightworks registry was kept despite the reinstall. Do you think this could be the problem?
@ComancheMan81 It's possible that you could try reinstalling lightworks. Those were the codecs I was tallking about. Perhaps you could check out the Lightworks forums for more specific support, because, I'm not entirely sure what is going on in this case. :-)
Thanks for this tutorial, this helped a lot. I was lost when first starting Lightworks. Is it possible to create a movie, in which the camera is moving over a picture (JPG) - so zooming in / out, moving along a path, etc. ?
@mrnormalnormal its a great professional option, which costs noting (so hundreds less than premiere and vegas). Personally, I like the ease of use of Vegas Pro 9, but this does the job well too. I like LW more than Premiere, but Vegas' color correction features make it the best for me. Overall, if you own Vision Lab or AE, then using LW would get you great results anyway, cheaper than Vegas.
Thank you very much for this. I was sent a link to this software because through a chain of events Lost adobe premier pro CS4 on my computer and because adobe have brought out CS5 for only a 64bit system I couldn't download CS4 again. Back to my point. Thanks to you I'm now back to editing videos and now have a slight clue in how to use this software after spending 2 hours trying to figure out how to use it. A big thank you again
Q: Do you know if this supports AVCHD files. I'm sure it does but I keep getting an error when I try to import them. I installed the matrox codec pack that lightworks suggested, but I'm still not getting them. Any suggestions?
@redsox42311 I don't think it works, at least not with AVCHD from my HDR-SR12, because I just checked, and the files aren't even able to be selected/don't show up. Perhaps it depends on the camera, but I'm not sure. I have always used Vegas Pro to edit AVCHD from my camera which I use for the behind-the-scenes on some films where the T2i is the primary camera. Heh, cheers man.
@dvstudiosproductions Yeah, I use Vegas as well. I thought I saw somewhere that lightworks supported AVCHD but I guess not. It would be nice to see them add support when the stable version is released.
Thank you for this very first tutorial. I was using Premiere Pro till now and I am quite unexperienced in using this one but hopefully you can create some more tutorials like that that I will be better soon.
Nice - so this is the first video out there that acutally shows the use of lightworks. Thanks! But I must say, it seems to be a little hypaethralcand jumbled.
But anyway, I thinks this might get you a youtube partner in the long run.
SLOWWW DOWN! I watched this three times and have no idea how to work with this.

I used to use Adobe Premiere 6.0, it doesn't support HD and I can't afford any of the new pro software. Tried Premiere Elements, not to happy with it. Currently using Corel Videostudio X3, it works but crashes a lot. Thanks.

hmm it was quite fast, maybe even too fast, especially for non native english speakers like me! but still thx for your effort. maybe u can make a tutorial for english dummies sometimes!!
hansknecht 11 months ago 11

JDMaddiction9 11 months ago
@JDMaddiction9 "Lightworks 10.0.4 Public Beta requires 'Matrox VFW' codecs, available as a free download here:"
Did you follow the link on the download page to download the extra codecs you need? Just the first thought to cross my mind. If it's something else I wish you luck.
TheCrypticPie 10 months ago
@JDMaddiction9 I had a similar problem with my new computer last night (you've probably already solved this by now, but for anyone else...) I had already loaded the Matrox codecs, so I did some research and then installed Quicktime, and then (this was key) restarted my computer. Works just fine now. Good luck!

Yeah. So there. I am counting all the money I didn't spend - whee! On stuff I couldn't afford anyway. Great, great, job. I want to learn to talk fast like you bt wtht skpg thgs. hpy fc

Informative video, but you remind me of some of the fastest talking professors I had in college. XD

MANY THANKS for the video. You just solved my video software dilemma.
One question though. How well (if at all) does this work with green screens?
zacdee316 1 year ago
@zacdee316 Heh, heh, no problem. Glad you liked it. Lightworks can handle some chroma keying, but I haven't tried it out yet. I will though, thanks for the idea. I should have something posted this weekend mate!

@dvstudiosproductions, Thanks in advance. I appreciate it.

MansujaChannel 1 year ago
@MansujaChannel can none of you think for yourselves? how about the other 15 lightworks videos that deal with each part of the program seperately? Oh, bet you couldn't find those right?
dvstudiosproductions 1 year ago
@dvstudiosproductions Now this I don't understand. You make a video and then when there's some reasonable criticism, you ask why the person didn't watch all the other videos other people made? What is the point of making your video in the first place if there are so many other good videos?
You did this presentation VERY quickly. That's a completely reasonable critique for anyone to make. Talking down to them in response isn't fair on your part.
DavePerry2012 1 year ago
@DavePerry2012 Hmm, well you see, I made the OTHER videos. And they are much more in depth, which I think I mention in the video. That wasn't reasonable criticism- it covers a lot yes, but you should be able to follow it. And if you need clarification on something, look at my channel for videos on a whole bunch of lightworks stuff. It's broken down into small bits by topic (ie. effects, cutting, importing, capturing, etc) Does that help?
dvstudiosproductions 1 year ago
@dvstudiosproductions Ah, ok, well then I misunderstood you if you were talking about your own videos. This one is hard to follow as an introduction, but if you break it down more later then it may be fine. If you always talk as fast as you do in this one, I'll have to run it a few times to get everything, but I appreciate you trying to be thorough. It's a great program and kind of a miracle that it's free.

Great tutorial.
I am sorta struggling with codecs too. Even if I transcode the videos, they all show as only black.
Shaunakde 1 year ago
@Shaunakde Hmm, that's also strange. I apologize- but I'm going to refer you to the VFW codec download or to the Lightworks forums, becuase, they ought to know about these problems with the beta, and then they can fix them! Good luck and let me know if you need any other help...

Thanks for the great video!
I now have a question. Why cant I import my MPG files?
All my videos are in MPG so i would really like to know if there is a solution to this problem.
Thanks alot!
Josour17 1 year ago
@Josour17 No problem man, there are a bunch more on the way next week!
Perhaps it has something to do with needing the VFW Codecs installed. I'm not an expert on codecs regretably- I only really use AVCHD and .MOV on my PC. But perhaps if the install doesn't do the trick, checking the Editshare Lightworks forums will yield a favorable result? Best of luck man, thanks for watching the video!
dvstudiosproductions 1 year ago
@dvstudiosproductions Thanks for the quick answere!
But after i installed the Matrox VFW codes, am i suppose to do something with it?
Because it still doesnt work.
Mabye converting my MPG files to .MOV is an alternative? Do you know how easy that is?
I've checked in the forum but i only find the answere that installing the Matrox is going to help.
Josour17 1 year ago
@Josour17 Hmm, yeah I think just installing it is enough. If you post a thread, that might be best on their forum. Other than that, does Lightworks support MPG files? I'm on my laptop which doesn't have lightworks, but perhaps thats worth checking out. You can convert them using a freebie- Super- or something like VideoWrap, which I have the LITE installer for if you'd like, just message me. It works great but the pro version isn't sold anymore.
dvstudiosproductions 1 year ago
@Josour17 Quicktime!!! That's the key. And there is also some sort of configuring of the codecs. They were blinking in the start menu... then reboot.
ericpalmer 10 months ago
Thx for the tutorial, it's a good start to the topic. But I have a problem with codecs. Besides the fact that my Lightworks doesn't import mp4-encoded mobile video files, I don't have all the export formats seen in your tut. My export menu like different than yours. Choosing Quicktime I don't have that video/audio box, instead there's a compression button with the only the DV compressions codecs available. Which of Lightworks do you use and do I need Quicktime Pro? Thx a lot if u answer.
ComancheMan81 1 year ago
@ComancheMan81 Have you tried to downloading and installing the codec pack from the Lightworks website? That could be the answer- its on the LW download page. Otherwise, try updating Quicktime, or reverting to 7.5.5 which seems to help some users... let me know if that helps.
dvstudiosproductions 1 year ago
@dvstudiosproductions Do you mean the 'Matrox VFW' codecs? Yeah, I installed these before. Also my Quicktime is the newest version. Thing is, at first I forgot to install Quicktime BEFORE Lightworks. So after Quicktime, I reinstalled Lightworks for reasons of precaution. My assumption is, that Lightworks registry was kept despite the reinstall. Do you think this could be the problem?
Thx for your answer.
ComancheMan81 1 year ago
@ComancheMan81 It's possible that you could try reinstalling lightworks. Those were the codecs I was tallking about. Perhaps you could check out the Lightworks forums for more specific support, because, I'm not entirely sure what is going on in this case. :-)

Thanks for this tutorial, this helped a lot. I was lost when first starting Lightworks. Is it possible to create a movie, in which the camera is moving over a picture (JPG) - so zooming in / out, moving along a path, etc. ?
GeorgScholz 1 year ago
@GeorgScholz I'm really not sure how to do that in LW. Sorry about that, I'm glad you are enjoying the program though and the tutorials.
dvstudiosproductions 1 year ago
is it better than vegas pro 10 or premiere pro??
mrnormalnormal 1 year ago
@mrnormalnormal its a great professional option, which costs noting (so hundreds less than premiere and vegas). Personally, I like the ease of use of Vegas Pro 9, but this does the job well too. I like LW more than Premiere, but Vegas' color correction features make it the best for me. Overall, if you own Vision Lab or AE, then using LW would get you great results anyway, cheaper than Vegas.

If Irate Gamer uses this, he could get so fustrated that he would cry back to something that people say is Ulead VideoStudio Plus.

Thanks for this tutorial.
Q: Do you know if this supports AVCHD files. I'm sure it does but I keep getting an error when I try to import them. I installed the matrox codec pack that lightworks suggested, but I'm still not getting them. Any suggestions?
redsox42311 1 year ago
@redsox42311 I don't think it works, at least not with AVCHD from my HDR-SR12, because I just checked, and the files aren't even able to be selected/don't show up. Perhaps it depends on the camera, but I'm not sure. I have always used Vegas Pro to edit AVCHD from my camera which I use for the behind-the-scenes on some films where the T2i is the primary camera. Heh, cheers man.
dvstudiosproductions 1 year ago
@dvstudiosproductions Yeah, I use Vegas as well. I thought I saw somewhere that lightworks supported AVCHD but I guess not. It would be nice to see them add support when the stable version is released.

@dvstudiosproductions
I´ve tried it, too. It doesnt work. It doesent show the files...
It would be more helpful (for me), if its in german. Can someone do this?

Nice - so this is the first video out there that acutally shows the use of lightworks. Thanks! But I must say, it seems to be a little hypaethralcand jumbled.
But anyway, I thinks this might get you a youtube partner in the long run.
