Talk about a dilemma!! I've been a Mclaren fan for about twenty odd years but I used to love the old Black and Gold lotus's when Senna used to race them. Kimi is also my favourite racer since Mika so I think I'm going to have to cheer on Lotus this year.

If the car is within a tenth of the Mclarens and Red Bulls then I think Kimi's driving ability will make that up. When motivated (which he wasn't at Ferrari) he's the best since Senna at driving an F1 car to it's absolute limit,even beyond at

kimi will be fast but his gear shifting will have to change. he's shifting like the old f1 cars he use to drive, breaking into corners far too early. todays f1 drivers shifts and breaking zones are far quicker and later into the turns. its why shumi has struggled so.

@xevious2501 That's partially correct. He does have to change his shifting, but not for the reasons you stated.

The shifting has changed due to the blown diffusers, where fuel was discharged to the engine to force it to produce enough exhaust airflow into the diffusers. That's why the down-shiftting technique changed.

But it's an issue that he can quickly correct when Lotus starts to explain to him the new changes (which can be irrelevant, since blown-diffuseres are banned).

@xevious2501 I think Kimi is a very natural and instinctive driver so he will easily get used to whatever set up you give him. Besides all that telemetry and briefings will educate him on any new technologies but at the end of the day it is his skills, experience and seat-of-the-pants feel that will determine the way he will drive and will make the difference compared to other cars. Schumi is another case cuz he is much older so I feel he has lost some quickness only young drivers have

That sounds like the exaust system that got banned after last year becuase every time the driver lifted off throttle mid corner the clutch would cut in and the engine would actualy throttle on more to make exaust gas flow over the defusers for more downforce ,but i thought it wasnt going to be alowed in the 2012 season hmmm i coluld be wrong.

@jackobcooper He is getting used to the new car. Besides, he isn't using good tyres. I read in ESPN that the tyres used in his first laps with the car were demonstration tyres, so he can practice and drive without braking the no-test rule.

These tyres have nowhere near as much grip as the normal tyres, and not even the same amount of grip that the tyres he used in the past had. That's why he slides so much.

But, I'm really looking forward to see him race. this season is going to be epic.

@jackobcooper yes but not the way you are thinking. he is deliberately probing the limits, not deliberately "drifting".  Big difference. Drifting has no place in circuit racing. You drift, you are slow and corner speed is more important to be drifting.

Drifting doesn't mean full lock sliding, it can mean using the throttle to steer or rotate the rear (which is what we see in the video) or the car or it can mean a 4 wheel drift. Of course he's deliberately probing the limits, but Ironically you say drifting is slower, but in actual fact 4wheel drifting is the fastest way through 1 to 4th gear corners.

When you lose grip, you lose corner speed. However, that is not the end of the story because fast lap times is compromising one sector with another so that some drivers will set up to slide in one corner only to get more speed into the next corner

@AccordGTR Since cars were invented. Through any corner a car is drifting with all 4 wheels by a slight ammount, in a sharp corner it's faster to 4wheel drift, emphasised by WRC cars taking a hairpin sideways.

@jackobcooper OK "slight amount" is a key phrase because maximum grip for every tire has some slip angle and therefore a little sliding will occur depending on the road surface, tire temperature, steering angle, etc. WRC cars will slide more than F1 cars because they have less overall grip, plus the fact they are AWD requires a slightly different driving style which emphasizes corner exit acceleration rather than corner entry and mid-corner speed to maximizes AWD.
