Sent here from Reddit. Just loaded the game on my emulator that allows separating the sound channels. Triangle is being used for bass, Noise for drums, Pulse 1 for melody, with Pulse 2 supporting the melody for chord effects. Sounds amazing, but pretty standard for most NES games that had amazing theme music. Keep in mind though that in-game music wouldn't be able to be this good, as there would be no more channels left for game sounds. Some games cheated by pausing a channel for a sound to play
This just has to be the best Title Theme ever, Tim Follin is a master, a god of the NES sound-chip. I love this theme to death, 8-bit sex to my ears. Certainly the whole soundtrack to this game is awesome, which makes me love this game more, I think this game is fun, and more enjoyable because of the music.
Basically thanks a lot Bucky for uploading this, and in this awesome sound quality, you're the man! ;D
I swear to god, everything made by Tim Follin sounds like it's too complicated for the NES, as though there's way more instruments than normal. This man was a god and fuck why doesn't he make soundtracks any more.
@MrRandomTux true... but i don't use midis for ytp making purposes. I use them as a reference every now and again for mario paint composer. I'm trying out this song by ear, but it's almost impossible considering how fast it goes.
And also yeah, i know you're not gonna make one, nor am i. :1
Look up 'nsfplay' or 'nsfplug' from pokipoki (dot org). It allows you the slow the music down, mute channels, and it even comes with a keyboard display so you can view all the notes as they playback in real time. It's the best way to learn NES music as accurately as possible.
he never ever used any sample on this trust me !!! i have listen carefully the track of "silver surfer" and "Solstice" and mute all the track with an emulator and Tim have just combine some pink noise with a glide of a low bass square wave form of the Nes chip.
Yup, this is the original, sampled from console. The bass is a bit heavy... this is the one soundtrack where I experimented and boosted the low end a tad on the mixer. Now it sounds like a bit much to me, so I don't do that anymore. Other than some slightly misleading touches from the mixer, the sound should be completely authentic. :)
I didn't hear the jump at 0:11. Sometimes YT glitches out a bit, let me know if you still hear it.
instantly recognisable as Follin ie awesome

Why is it that a good composer like Tim Follin always did the music for mediocre to crap games? It just doesn't seem right, really

I'm not sure what's the weirdest:
1. There's a soundtrack in a game based on Pictionary
2. Someone actually collected the music in the game
3. People have covered tracks from this game
4. The music is actually awesome

why has no one made a midi of this yet.
PurpleKirby54 8 months ago
@PurpleKirby54 Because we don't need Midi Replacements.
MrRandomTux 8 months ago
@MrRandomTux let me correct myself
Why has no one made a midi for this in secret and not give out to everyone who asks
PurpleKirby54 8 months ago
@PurpleKirby54 I dunno. But what I meant was that If a midi was made making YTPMVs of this would be easy. And they'd be sloppy too.

Or, Tim Follin made it sound like that.
Still, it's brilliant!!

Wow Tim Follin Really knew how crack the sound on that chip up to eleven.
Did he used DPCM channel for those drums?
arciks11 2 years ago 19
What porcodio said. :) It's the noise combined with a 'speed pitch' effect on the triangle channel. The triangle makes it extra beefy.
explod2A03 2 years ago 11
@arciks11 Also, Tim Follin says he doesn't believe in DPCM samples.
