  • Sorry. I meant Gallows Pole.

  • Led Zeppelin did this and called it Hangman on Zep III

  • WOW!! Her voice has only got better, her choices of songs were unbelievable, and she has gotten better looking as she has gotten older. I wish I could say something incredibly special, but she just seems to be magic. Isn't she from (or lives in ) Montana??

  • This is the same story once made popular by a little known playwright William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure. The play would probably be popular in today’s society because of its theme on sex in society, but sex is far more important in our society than brilliant poetic works. "Some rise by sin, some by virtue fall".

  • Before being replaced by the ground breaking "SHINDIG!"-"HOOTENANNY" was

a fantastic excursion in the world of Folk Music, and did a great job in showcasing

these wonderfully talented musicians-this old series, which originated on ABC-TV

in 1963,was recently released on DVD a few years ago,and it is simply a great and

wonderful expirince for those who love this type of music!

  • What a babe she was! and what a great voice! This is a live performance and sounds every bit as good as the recording done in a studio where any mistakes can be corrected. Great song from a great performer.

  • Love it. Thank you.

  • What makes the beauty of her rendition even more amazing is that she'd been in sanatorium for tuberculosis not that long before this. It most definitely didn't impair her talent even remotely--beautiful, beautiful voice.

  • I was so happy she sung this when I saw her last year. 70 years old and still performing! I love you Judy Collins!

  • Always had a huge crush on her. :-)

  • 2:22 absolutely beautiful. I love Judy Collins and I feel so lucky that I got to see her yesterday at Newport. She sang this song, and still has a strong and beautiful voice. Joan Baez and Pete Seeger were there too.

  • I probably saw this on television when it was broadcast. I was 12.

  • Outstanding! Thanks for posting. The record version I know though, has some different words like "from his golden bed at midnight" and "he will rob you of your flower"; also, one verse which was left out here: "curs-ed be the judge so cruel, 13 years may he lie bleeding......"

  • She also omitted the murderous ending to Masters of War, as did Odetta.

  • She is so young and beautiful in this video!! Thank you for posting. I have been a fan for almost 40 years.....

  • I am so pissed at whoever it was that stole my early Judy Collins records. That was just wrong, and I've never recovered.

  • Find 'em on Ebay. Very affordable these days.

  • nevermind, found it.

  • semplicemente meravigliosa

  • She looked great in this video actually quite attractive. I wonder how old she was here, because her looks took a dramatic change later on. She truly was quite beautiful here. Her voice most definitely matches her beauty. Great Post!

  • Judy was born in May, 1939, so close to or actually 24 depending on the date of this. She later was involved w/Steve Stills, who wrote 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' in tribute to her.

  • love this song!

  • what a treasure to find this early Collins performance on YouTube - I believe it was on her second album back in the golden days of folk music

  • How can you even think she is not beautiful. Look at the way she holds her head and injects the audience with her person. She sucks me in!

  • why can't i find thie lyrics anywhere!? HELP!!!

  • Is that Bill Lee on bass?

  • No, it's Norman Keenan. He was the "house bassist" for "Hootenanny" during its second season. After that, he joined Count Basie's band, where I imagine he was much happier! :-)

  • Awesome. I remember that show as a teenager.

  • She's beautiful

  • Your wrong! She was (and still is) a beautiful woman. I would be thrilled, just to meet her.

  • *shrug* beauty is something diffrent for everyone. I'd love to hear her sing in person!

  • what a strange comment!

she was very pretty! beautiful blue eyes she had (has) and always so peaceful looking

maybe its time to change your beauty standards?

  • It is so refreshing to know there are people out there who remember what a great folk singer she was. I know the times did achangin, but I wish folk music had not gone away. Her first four albums were true folk music, then she had to follow Dylan and go electric. I felt betrayed. Yep, I took it personally. She still makes good music. Thank you for all the postings of these vintage performances.

  • judy rocks check out the album "colours of the day"

  • This song and her version of "John Riley" simply blows me away. All these years (and I am 44) I had no idea that Judy performed music like this. Know wonder she went on to be so successful! The raw and sweet power of her voice and her guitar is awesome!!!

  • Thank you for uploading this video it is one of my favorite songs done by Judy.

  • principles...where did they go?

  • there, where all the flowers, the young girls and boys went....

  • I thought the boycott was because Hootenanny refused

to have Pete Seeger on the program because he refused

    to cooperate with the HUAC.

  • There was such a boycott, but Pete Seeger himself urged her to appear on the show anyway... in fact, he babysat her son Clark so she could do one of the three episodes she was on. But she thought the show was too slick and commercial - that, combined with the lyric changes, made her decide to boycott "Hootenanny" on artistic grounds.

  • A little trivia: lyrics were changed at the insistence of the producers. They didn't like the fact that the judge was the villian of this piece, nor did they want an overt sexual reference. So "golden bed" was changed to "righteous arms." Judy was inscensed, refused to make future appearances on "Hootenanny", and called for an "artistic boycott" of the show.

  • I notice they did allow the bit about "sweet favors" to stay in. No mistaking what that was about!
