I don't know why but the most likely reason is, the catcher was probably running his mouth. Watch the movie "The Sandlot" where the street kids play baseball against some formed junior league team and whoop their ass. The catcher keeps running his mouth to the batters. This is *most likely* just a real life situation of that. But again i'm just speculating I don't know the actual story behind this.

because when a batter charges the mound the catcher does everything in his power to not let the batter get at the pitcher. He'll grab the batter from behind and usually the batter will only get one shot at the pitcher while the pitcher then has a tee to hit from(the catcher). pretty impressive actually.
