People are ridiculous with the “It’s just hair.” OMG say that to other women-you cut their hair or change it in any way and they would probably go crazy too. OR if they just went bald instantly-women, in general, take their hair seriously. It’s a sign of feminism and beauty to have healthy, gorgeous hair.
@markee871 its clear you're a troll. But since you seem to be uninformed on the subject, I invite you to look up on yt black women with natural long hair or visit the longhaircare forum. Hair is always growing, that is a scientific fact. If you don't care to look that up then you shouldn't comment on things you clearly have no information on.
@DayeDayeX no different than why people SHOULD take their health seriously. As trivial as hair may seem to some, African Americans hair is the most unique and used to be very important to the status the woman. Back in the day AAs began to straighten their hair in order to fit in to what Caucasians believed was beautiful. AAs were considered ugly if their hair was of it's natural texture. It's 2011 and it's about time we let go of trying to fit in and be proud of who we truly are foremost.
@DayeDayeX Secondly, the chemicals that make up relaxers have been proven to destroy the scalp and cause serious damage to the scalp and hair. To me, that more than enough reason to stop using it. Ultimately, I believe it's because of the history behind why we started and why many still fill the need to continue relaxing our hair that we take it so seriously. Life is to short continuing to do something that is damaging and expensive in order to maintain the status quo.
@DayeDayeX I've spoken to many women who told me they still can't wear their hair natural in the work place because they feel discouraged by their coworkers and employers. It's ridiculous. There's no other ethnicity in this country that has to hide there natural self in order to get a job.
I really feel you. I always thought my hair wouldn't be manageable in its natural state because it was too thick and coarse and that held me back from going natural. It wasn't until i began to research it that i realized it was something i could do with the right knowledge of my hair.
@TheGr8testbeing My scalp and many other people's scalps care. Also I save time now not having sweep my broken/damaged hair off the floor. Those that do care get it. Those that don't...well I don't really care.
@TheGr8testbeing Last I checked you don't regulate YT so I'll make whatever videos I wish just as you can. The only difference is, I won't be on your videos telling you not to make them and making negative comments. How about you go watch videos about things that interest you instead of things that don't. People like you irritate me. I don't waste my time watching things I don't like and leaving negative comments with the millions of videos on YT to choose from.
CHOOSING NOT TO BE ''PRO BLACK'' AND NATURAL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HATING YOURSELF...IT'S ABOUT LOOKING NICE AND PUT TOGETHER.....HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WANTING TO BE WHITE....
@MyrandaLuv1 Who said anything about being pro black? What does that even have to do with wearing your hair in its natural state? Natural can look nice and put together just as people with relaxers can look a hot mess. Back in the day and even to this day, many women feel like they can't wear their hair natural because it makes their white coworkers uncomfortable. This is very much the case in many cities. Thankfully I live in Atlanta where it's now the norm to see natural hair wherever you go.
@Elderyoungone Sorry but you have no idea what you're talking about plus you contradicted yourself several times in your own argument. No one needs to watch your video.
Black mother mess their duaghters minds up when they are young and other black women around them do the same as they are growing up. They do it to each other. Om glad to see this new wave of black females trying to change that though process to where one day it will be more than norm to see black women without the weaves and perms. It can happen, you guys just have to keep doing what you are doing
People need to sit down because unless your mother managed to relax your hair when you're still a fetus, we're all born natural. It's just a choice as to whether you want to stay natural or not.
@Dark0Malkavian It's just unfortunate when you're too young to make the choice and your parents make it for you. It's sad when I see kids barely old enough to talk with a relaxer.
wish black ppl can embrace their REAL hair and stop this obsession with long hair! YOURE NOT INDIAN OR LATINO OR ARAB OR EUROPEAN OR ASIAN OR ETC! EVEN CHRIS ROCK KNOWS THIS FACT! BITCH YOU ARE THE IGNORANT ONE! YOURE IN DENIAL! PEOPLE LAUGH AT YOU! U CAN PUT AFRO SHEEN UNTIL KINGDOM COME..IT WONT GROW AN INCH! ITS NOT RACIST U DUMB BITCH, ITSS THE TRUTH! U JUST CAN ACCEPT IT! HAIR IS LIKE SKIN COLOR! ITS GENETIC! FIND ME A SHANIQUA WITH INDIAN NATURAL HAIR! IMPOSSIBLE! STAY BALD
@markee871 Not sure why you felt the need to call me names, nor am I sure what your problem is. The obsession is with healthy hair, and when it's healthy it will be grown and be long like it's supposed to be no matter your ethnicity. Chris rock doesn't know shit. Just because he made a movie that only scratched the surface of an issue and did nothing to show alternatives to expensive weaves and detrimental chemical relaxers.
@markee871 Take your racist rants somewhere else and how about you know what the hell you're even talking about first. And by the way, it's been over two years since I stopped using relaxers and my hair is over 10 inches long now. No balding here.
I love my natural hair!Thanx to all the sistahs who stepped up and gave us the courage to get off the creamy crack,This is a discussion and movement that is looong overdue,Im so proud to be a part of it, it feels so good, I dnt kno but it almost feels ancestrol if that makes any sense.
@royalcoils100 I agree. I think we're now in the age of enlightenment. A time when people begin to wake up to the facts about what's reality and not the bs we've been sold for so long.
Black this, White that........When will you dark people learn to stop using racist terms to describe themselves. You only help to perpetuate the pale face European concept of "Race". This is soooooo common in the USA. Race is not a science, it is a european construct used to prove racial superiority. You are not "Black", you are dark. ...and there are very dark women with long straight hair. WAKE UP!!
@Born2Flesh You're right Born. I was not conscious of the history behind the term black at the time of this video, & thus would not have used it. The content I still stand by although my choice of words are not correct. Black is a color not a person. I'm not dark either b/c it's really no different than saying black. The point of the video was to discuss why women with kinky, coily, & curly hair may feel the need to use relaxers. Whatever they want to consider themselves is irrelevant.
@Born2Flesh I dont entirely agree w/ure comment.1st, the term blk isnt a racist term. It was bp who decided in the 60s how they wanted 2 b described-the power was ours. 2nd, bp w/darker skin tones r not the only 1s who use the term 2 describe themselves, so do medium & lighter & everything in btwn describe themselves. 3rd its not only common in the US, its used everywhere xcept in England it seems. 4th ure rite race isnt a science although its been made 2 b by racist wp & ... contd
@mscardioqueen i hate when white ppl comment on something they have no idea about. but i love when a educated black women comes along and drops knowledge and more !
@chachaslidein AHAHAHAH educated my ass! why do u assume they are white?????? ITS THE TRUTH! BLACK WOMEN CANT GROW HAIR U DUMB SELF HATING BITCH, U WILL NEVER HAVE LATINA/ARAB/EUROPEAN/ASIAN HAIR! u can rub that afro sheen all day until kingdom come!
@markee871 i never said i wanted that knida hair honey if you havent noticed all of you non black women have the same texture hair which is straight and has no texture which fall and is flat and limb and hardly stylable. and if you had any sense then you would know that this video is over natural hair. i would never want to be you or anything like you . you are very uneducated its obvious, you are jus blabbing because you want to be heard. and apparently you must be interested in our natural
@markee871 hair or you wouldnt even be on this hair channel. so why dont you look up the definiton of dumb before you open your motuh because you will come to find that you arent to far from what the definition say! i dont think these black women want hair like you because im sure your hair is flat, greasy, and limp and lifeless so i would never want my hair to look anything like yours. it sure is funny how all of yall hair is the same just flat and lifeles but black women can go
@markee871 afro to stright to curly all within a matter of days. our hair is diverse unlike yours, you have to do all kinds of stuff to make your hair do what ours is naturally created to do. so go educate yourself before you say something ok. you sound so simple " by using the b word like that really hurts my feeling, trust me ive bben called worse, how unoriginal of you to say i hate myself when you are simply the one that choose my comment to comment on. so it looks to me that your
@markee871 insecurities are getting the best of you. so please educate yourself beforing saying something so simple and unoriginal, u sound so stupid because i do not have to cuss to get my point across unlike you, aparently i said something that struck a nerve to you. but like i said to her i cant stand when ppl comment on something they have no clue aboput. so do me and yourself a favor and go get a clue, and educate yourself beyond the 9th grade please it will probably be the best thing you
@markee871 can do for yoursself. and if you want to come at me, come at me on some knowledge and education. im suprised that word is even in your vocabulary, because you obviously have proved that you have no clue to what that word means!
@markee871duh our hair isnt like yours and will never be. our hair is diverse unlike yours we are the only ones that can wear any style and wear our hair in any way and look cute. i bet if you walked down the street with a afro ppl would look at you like you are crazy, i bet if you you had braids in your hair i bet ppl would have something to say and ask what are you trying to prove. i bet if any one of us black women wore our hair in anyone of those styles we would get compliments.
@markee871 why is it that we can rock our hair like that and it be acceptable and you cant? why because you are simple and plain and have to settle for the plain jane look and be so simple. unlike our hair which is simply diverse so of course our hair is not like yours and would never ever be like yours. and that sweetie indeed is a blessing and not a curse
@Born2Flesh ...ignorant bm. Skin tone will always b an issue as long as we cont 2 make it 1. Theres nothing wrong w/the term "Blk". Its used 2 describe every bp regardless of skin tone-we r 1 under 1 cultural grp.Theres no shame in that! Blk represents our history not our skin tone. There r over 40 different shades of bp. BTW, I'm sure she know shes dark, so theres no need 4 u 2 point that out 2 her. The majoritiy of bp have kinky, curly hair. Long straight-haired drk skin bw r in the minority.
@Born2Flesh we are actually brown!but why does it matter anyways? race will ALWAYS be an ISSUE in America but ours tends to be focused on more that others
Also, I have to acknowledge their belief that it was not considered acceptable to wear my hair that way. Both of my parents are bi-racial Euro-African and very Eurocentric . Until two years ago, I had no idea what my natural hair even looked like.
Now, I am natural, but have no idea what to do with it-after researching and trying people's suggestions. Nothing is wrong with my hair. It is soft and springy- I find that most of the styles don't suit me . So, I'm still trying to make it work.
@IsisAmtiess I never said it was easy. It takes a lot of work and trial and error. I think most naturals have gone through or are still going through the same thing you are. I was relaxed for a good portion of my life, so I had to learn what to do with my hair because my mom used to take me to the salon to get my hair pressed. Everyone's hair is different though sometimes similar in some ways. Keep experimenting. I have lots of friends who just get their hair flat ironed which is an option.
I support what your saying, but don't think it is so simple. Basically, I had been getting relaxers my entire life, until 2 1/2 years ago, when I stopped. I have a different hair texture than both of my parents. My dad has thin, wavy hair and my mom- long straight hair. Neither of them knew what to do with my coily, thick hair- so I was given a relaxer, when I was 5 or six- then, when "necessary" from that point forward.
I just wear a wig and I really does not care what people think, couple of white women at work ask me in front of people oh you got a new wig, people are stupid,at time I like to come back and say to her you need to lost those extra 300 pounds but I am at peace LOL
I would be natural RIGHT NOW, if it wasn't for having to go bald or having only 2 inches of hair. It takes a good 2-4 years to transition into natural without the big chop.
@maplemerry I didn't want to do it either but after I got burned so bad from my last relaxer, I knew I didn't want to ever get one again, so I guess that was my motivation. I transitioned for 6-7 months and during the last 3, I wore micro twists. Bad idea because they broke off my edges. When I took them out I decided to cut the straight ends off. But If you're into wearing sew-ins, wigs or weaves, those are just some suggested options to get you over the TWA stage if you really want to do it.
@maplemerry you dont have to Big chop to be natural just STOP getting relaxers, perms etc. the BC is a choice. Maybe you have rocked short hair before and want to try a BC but its not a rule to be natural. It doesn't take years either lol well it depends if you are looking for long hair. In that case it may. After 1-2yrs of trim'n a good blow out you should have a nice pony tail
@DJDProductions@Thunderbult3000 I hate when these discussions turn into this. This was actually the point I was making about how unproductive these discussions are. I think natural hair is beautiful and I admire those who make the transition b/c it's not easy. But the fact remains, women make the choices they make for various reasons. It's not always about being unenlightened or hating themselves or whatever else.
@ajc1892 The discussion was between myself and Thunderbolt, therefore it wasnt unproductive because it wasn't intended to be productive. That's what the video was for as well as everything else I do in my life that may open the minds of others.
@DJDProductions actually thunderbolt tagged me, so that was the discussion I was referring to. But anyway, this is clearly going nowhere. Your after pictures were quite nice either way. Peace.
@ajc1892 Undortunatelty most people are unenlightened on the subject. But if a person knows full well the facts about how damaging relaxers are yet still uses them I question their concern for their own health. Regardless people can do whatever they choose but that's no reason not to put forth the info.h
Great video, big ups to u for acknowledging the people that touched u on ur journey. This is whats missing today, listening & paying respect to the ones that made a path for others to follow... Again, much respect to u sister.. Now its ur turn to return the favor. Spread the word, share the knowledge, help some one the way others have helped u. And if u can, go a step further... One Love, Each one Teach one...
@Thunderbult3000 Thanks! And I am already teaching others and passing on what I've learned. I agree, not enough people are sharing their knowledge to better everyone.
@DJDProductions: Thats whats up... Big ups to ya... With everyone doing at least a little, many people have a great chance of being informed. Because like u've said & I've heard 100's of times before, most women just dont know about managing & styling their own hair in its natural state. And most of it is because their parents never showed/taught them. Many of them bought into the whole "quick fix" (so-called), to get that "European style" straight hair. Its all due to propaganda.
This is a really good video, but I have to say, I don't understand why women who choose to go natural feel the need to denigrate women who continue to use relaxers. If you really feel comfortable in your decision, you shouldn't have to castigate the choices of other women in order to validate your choice. Women make decisions about their hair for a variety of reasons. It doesn't always come down to who is enlightened and who is not.
@ajc1892 Hmmmm. I don't think it's, to use your big word, "castigating" women who are relaxed. I think when women discover the facts about how damaging relaxers really are, and then experience how healthy, long, and strong their hair is now for the first time since before they started relaxing, they're just excited. As was in my case and many of my friends who have also gone natural.
@DJDProductions Just as I am now very passionate about vegetarianism now that I've read the scientific facts of how eating meat is directly linked to cancer and many other health issues. My passion about what I now know (not believe) is why I want to pass that knowledge on to others just as it was introduced to me. There is so much people believe that is wrong, but if they did some research they would discover facts and know that things aren't what we've always believed them to be.
@DJDProductions: I think its very interesting that every single time someone mentions to most of our Black women about things like this, which is very beneficial to her & her family, they view it as an attack or someone degrading them. WTF? Someone please tell me that the mental state hasnt diminished to such a low that "anything" pointed out is taken to a silly level. Come'on now. Just like some of my lady friends say, its crazy that they can highlight u, but no one can can say a thing to them.
@Thunderbult3000 Yes this is the case with so many. Quick to disregard facts, and just blindly continue down a detrimental path just because that's what everyone they know is doing/the norm. People are amazed at how long and thick my hair has grown. The same people who didn't understand why I cut all my hair off, or why I stopped relaxing it straight, or had something negative to say about it. Those same people now either have nothing to say or are asking me how to get their hair like mine.
@DJDProductions:" Those same people now either have nothing to say or are asking me how to get their hair like mine.' The ones speechless are usually ur haters, the others were just non-believers out of ignorance, now they know because u have talked the talk & walk the walk... Truth is most are just uninformed & just dont understand nor want to admit it. Being afraid of the unknown, people make plenty of excuses, laziness through conditioning, some are also scared to be somewhat original...
@ajc1892: Your wrong about that one completely. It has everything to do with knowledge/being enlightened. Because when you are informed, and you understand, then you will not knowingly hurt nor damage yourself in any way such as this because you now know. And you will also be compelled to tell/teach others especially ones close to you. Imagine knowing a cure for a deadly disease, & watching others succumb to it right around u. Must decent people wouldnt do that... Its the same here.
i feel that the pressure of society like what she said is sooo true. we believe that straight and long is defined as beauty like skinny and white. gladly people are slowly coming to own acknowledge what is right. i been away from the creamy crack for 2 yrs now but my hair is still not long. i must say its extremely healthy. i just keep playing with new ideas to grow it and care it. the key is make your hair your hobbie and most of all. DONT GIVE A ISH BOUT WHAT THE ANY ONE THINK WHEN U ROCK IT
@cheekebaby As far as your hair not growing long, it's possible that you have split ends. When's the last time you went and got it trimmed? In order to gain length it's been my experience that you need to keep it moisturized, in protective styles to protect the ends as much as you can. I have been wearing two strand twists with lots of shea butter applied when twisting for almost a year now and my hair is about 11 inches long. That has been my main style. Just different executions of it.
I agree with the lack of knowledge and management. It's kind of disappointing that a lot of black mothers don't want to take the time to do their little girl's hair and would rather take the easy - but harmful - way out with relaxers. I find mothers who do their hair with their daughters as a bonding experience (and it isn't the same when your ma takes you to the hair dresser). I guess I'm speaking out of personal experience, since my ma never got me a perm and she took the time to do my hair.
@chynadoll987 It definitely does. I don't miss the burning scalp, smelling the chemicals and wondering if my brain cells were frying, or all the breakage and never being able to get my hair to grow longer than a bob. The second best decision I ever made in my life, only second to going Vegetarian.
@DJDProductions lol I dont miss the smelly chemicals as well lol. being a vegetarian is a beautiful choice go for it girl.. your body will be amazing.. Im a vegetarian trying to get into vegan mode but its hard , because once every blue i love my eggs and cheese lol.. Im telling you when you go veggie everything will change you will drop crazy weight and get so pumped up for exercising lol its a very healthy lifestyle but stay away from the junk... Your body will get use to it quickly lol.
@chynadoll987 My BF and I actually went vegetarian 2 months ago, and you're right, it does make you feel better and he thinks he's superman now. lol I joined a gym to try and gain some muscle and tone and lose body fat. I was told I have 25%. Not good and I guess it's all in my stomach and arms. I have been cooking all fresh veggies, whole grains, quinoa, lentils, legumes, and spinach pasta. I am in love with Whole Foods! I have tried to stay away from all the processed vegetarian foods.
@DJDProductions lol I love whole foods as well...Your so right about the processed vegan food they are a big No No... Whole granis and fresh fruits and veggies are the best
I know that's right! My stupid behind self gave in last year to a perm after going natural for almost 3 years and regret it so very badly. My hair would have been down my back by now.
As black american we have been blinded to the true beauty of natural hair... if you ask the average women why they put relaxers in the answer will "cause i can't stand no nappy looking hair!" which is really sad of course. You can have relaxed or natural hair but if it's jacked up does it really matter? but this mind set has been passed down through the generation. time for us to tap into what real beauty is i did and i Love being natural!
hey love the vid, whats the best products to use when your transitioning? I still have alot of relaxed ends ,cant do big chop yet because I have bald spots so using castor oil to help. x
Relaxer I agree is the worst thing for my scalp I have been scared to go natural because I dont know how to look after it...
@sassyblack123 Thanks. I used Hydratherma Naturals Daily Moisturizing Growth Lotion and Trader Joe's Nourishing Spa Conditioner. I still use these products now. Also, make sure to do deep conditioning often. In your situation you should consider cutting off the relaxer and wearing a wig or sew in until your hair grows back in, making sure to do regular maintenance and keep your hair clean and moisturized. It should grow in thicker and healthier.
@maximuslyricus Thanks Maxi! You know what's funny? I get compliments on my hair everywhere I go. From all races, men and women. People love my natural hair. When they're black women with relaxers and they tell me their hair won't look like mine, I am sure to always tell them every texture is beautiful and can be made to look attractive. I have extremely tight coils, the texture most woman think can't look beautiful, but I'm proof that it can. All it takes is education and patience.
@chocolatecaramal1 Well it all depends on the person I think. For me I transitioned for 6 months. When I cut my relaxed ends off I only had about 2-3 inches of hair. Based off my current hair growth 1in a month you would think it would have been longer. For me the relaxer effected my scalp and thus the hair that had not grown yet. Several of the inches that were post relaxer were still mostly straight and had to be cut off. I would say wait until u are comfortable with the length of new growth
Usually the most attractive black women out there are actually biracial. Hallie Berry, Leona Lewis and Alicia Keys are all examples of beautiful women who are half black and half white!
What about Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union, Florence Griffith Joyner among other countless fine black women whom I run into on a daily basis. Only a moron would make such a statement, and besides, I've seen ugly biracial black women who are half black, half white. Either u need to get out more, or pick up a black magazine like essence or ebony.
BLACK WOMEN ARE THE DEVILS CHILDREN, PILLED WITH EVIL, DARKNESS. I WAS BORN ALONE, I AM GONA DIE ALONE.
BLACK WOMEN NEED TO GET OUT OF MY FACE, AND GET OUT OF MY WAY, the new BLACK MALE PANTHERS. WE HATE BLACK WOMEN, WE LOV WOMEN FROM OTHER RACES AND OUR GOAL IS TOO SEE THE BLACK WOMEN FAT 300 POUNDS ALONE A CAT LADY. BITCH I HOPE YOU DIE TOMORROW black women want a war with black men ,find then watch us drop 20 hiroshima bombs on this black hoes

@StowneandIze It's not because they want to be white. They want the same type of hair marketed by fashion. White people aren't the only ones on the planet with "straight, silky, and smooth" hair - all of which are buzz words in the hair market.
I totally agree with you on the knowledge and the products. I am soo soo happy that now natural hair is coming out in the media and print and there are products out there for us if we choose not to make them ourselves. GOOD VIDEO!!
"As children we don't really have control of our hair ... our parents have control"
So true! I had a relaxer put in my head at age 5 or 6 because my mother was "overwhelmed" with caring for three heads of African American hair (hers, mine and my sister's). I now really wish I had been given a choice instead of just having something that will take years to reverse forced on me.
@anpvk7 Thank you that is very true. We never grew up on how to grow our hair. So of course it would be hard. So was potty training , but you can go to the bathroom by yourself now right? What if that was our hair back then , being trained to take care of it. It would be a much better world for us. More saving from the products and Korean stores taking from the community would probably be gone cause the fake products they give us dont work on natural hair well.
girl i went natural last year and in 2 months it will be a year.. and my hair is already longer than what it was b4 i went natural. When i str8n it with my fingers it past my shoulders already...we can have long hair just have to take care of it with or without a relaxer ! its worth the time..
It will be a year for me too in March and my hair is 8 inches and past my shoulders. I love it. I agree with you, either relaxed or natural you still have to really take care of your hair in order to retain length. I love the versatility you have being natural and I think my hair is too fine for a relaxer and that's why it broke off so easily when it was relaxed.
Thanks Amerikaten! I agree. Our hair is so unique and versatile. We should embrace that. We can do things no one else can do with their hair (when it's in it's natural state). As you can see from this video, I don't have a problem with braids or weaves when they done right. Even these you see were too tight & too small so they broke my edges off a bit. But when they're done right they are great as protective styles to leave your hair alone for a while.
@Amerikaten yea ur right its not about weave or perms exactly its about how u wear it. but i alwaysthought perms make ur hair wavy. it does that to mine... until i flat iron it, lol.
Perms are what people who have naturally straight hair use to make it curly or wavy. African Americans use relaxers to do just that, relax the curl or make it straight. Some people use the two terms interchangeably which is incorrect because they mean two different things.
I just watched the movie " Good Hair " and it pissed me off a little. I never knew the hair game went this deep probably because I'm a male.
But anyway thank DJD for even trying to wear your real hair.
I begged my girlfriend to wear her real hair long before I learned all this stuff and I had to bribe her with gifts and treats to get her to do it. I liked her real hair because she looked HOT wearing her real hair and not because I hated the weaves.
Her main problem was that it was hard and time consuming to have to fix your hair every day while maintaining the style it is in. And she wanted to wear her hair in many different ways which caused a lot of stress trying to be creative. So I just shut up cause I saw how hard it was. As a black male I had my time wrestling with hair too. I just cut my hair off got a brush and some pomade and a wave cap. And do the same routine everyday.
Its way tuffer for a women on many different levels.
I agree it can be a bit time consuming, but if you love truly you will put in the work required. It also helps to find styles that will last a week or two. I am currently wearing 2-strand twists and I only do my hair once every 2 weeks. It takes me about 5 hrs to take down, detangle, wash, and style, but it lasts 2 weeks where I don't have to do anything but spray a little water mixed with coconut oil on it. Relaxers make our hair so weak and fragile which is my main reason for going natural.
You must be as ignorant as your posts. You totally missed the point I was making. If you were never exposed to knowledge then how are you to know? If you grow up around only relaxed women then explain to me how you are supposed to just know everything about managing natural hair? It is not something that you are just born with. I really don't know why I am even responding to such an ignorant person. Go watch some more rap videos something you'll better understand. This is grown folks talk here.
i agree im a guy...but i just happened to be infactuated with women hair lol...but i like how u got nneka playing in the background good song to go with this topic. but you are beautiful wish you luck.
That is the same case here in the US, especially in predominantly white cities. Natural hair is threatening because it's unique, just plain different.
Excellent video! You are so on point and I commend you for making this very candid statement! It's true, I relaxed my daughter's hair at a very early age of 6yrs old. When I think about it now, I think YIKES! Wayyy toooo young. AND here I thought I was doing her a favor. She had thick, beautiful, hair down her back and those shampoo days were torture for her and me, so it started with the "Kiddy" relaxer, you know the rest of the story, relaxers for yrs, NOW she's 23yrs old and NATURAL..
Thanks Lori. Your daughter's hair is beautiful and so many other women have no idea what their natural hair really looks like because they've been relaxed as long as they can remember.
mY PROBLEM is when black women need a break from these things or can't do them and completely damage their scalp to the point a of bald in envie of something they don't have
I think the hair thing is deeper then that bsanonymous. For one you have to accept you hair to some extent b/c not all blacks can use chemicals to straighten their and the barids thing not all women can take that tension on their scalp, then what do you do. I see a lot of black women going bald from the perm and the chemicals causing mild to saveire burns,
i think this natural hair thing is about the pain we have suffered from the hatred against our hair. Any other race of women can walk outside with their hair in its natural state and nothing gets said. A black woman does it and her hair is nappy, shes pro black, or blah blah blah. The problem is that too many black women are ashamed of their natural hair and look down on those who choose to wear theirs natural. Its a mental thing that black people go through hun!
your welcome. I just think that so many people get offended by black women who address certain things about OUR hair issues. Its about more than just hair for us. We have been the only group, race, etc of people who has been bashed about wearing our hair in its natural state. No one is saying that a person who wear relaxed hair is bad but most blacks who put relaxers had no choice because they got them when they were young. It wasnt an option and black people need to look into this more...
instead of just going with the flow of society. Im not saying that all black women should be natural but its a problem when too many dislike their hair because of what THEY WERE TOLD... and what society deems as beautiful
yeah. I guess some people just get accustomed with what they are use to doing and sometimes you just want be able to save or help or open up people as much as we would like
Yeah that's all I'm trying to do but many people feel threatened for whatever reason. Just like I wish everyone would stop smoking there will still be many people who will despite the proven health risks. Can't win em all.
You are absolutely right!! The root of the issue is too many of us have mental issues regarding "good" vs "bad" hair. We've been conditioned to think that nappy hair is ugly and unacceptable. It has got to stop!
I wanted a relaxer when I was younger and my mom said HELL NO. I'm so glad she did that for me! she loved my hair texture, and she had relaxers and it damaged her hair and she didnt want that for me. I rather just press my hair once or twice a year and then still have my curly hair when it gets wet, its the BEST of both worlds
Had my mom known well how to take care of my hair in its natural state when I was younger I would have never gotten a perm, but because she didn't know I didn't know so the easiest thing was to go with the trend and relax. Even back before I relaxed I wanted curly hair and I always thought it was beautiful, so had I known what I know now I would have never relaxed.
Great Video and Great Topic. Your Absolutely right about everything you've said. The negative images that society portray in America, in the African American communities are bad. Keep Teaching the truth much luv..
I totally agree with you. I was due for a relaxer on today but after coming back to you tube and gaining some inspiration I called the beautician and cancelled that DAMNNN Appointment.. To all the natural and beautiful ladies and if you read this I would like to say THANK YOU and your advice and experience is priceless.
Thanks so much and I would not have done it either without my youtube naturals. I hope you have success with your natural journey and please feel free to ask any questions. All I can say is it does take a lot of patience.
Hair continues to grow with weaves or extensions because it grows out of your head from the root not from the ends of the hairs. I only had the twists in for 2 months so my hair only grew an inch. Mine and most people's hair grows about a half an inch a month.
With black hair anything is possible. We don't really need relaxers to make our hair straight. We can use a flat iron lol

People are ridiculous with the “It’s just hair.” OMG say that to other women-you cut their hair or change it in any way and they would probably go crazy too. OR if they just went bald instantly-women, in general, take their hair seriously. It’s a sign of feminism and beauty to have healthy, gorgeous hair.
jackalo34 2 months ago
@markee871 its clear you're a troll. But since you seem to be uninformed on the subject, I invite you to look up on yt black women with natural long hair or visit the longhaircare forum. Hair is always growing, that is a scientific fact. If you don't care to look that up then you shouldn't comment on things you clearly have no information on.
Miss0Mani 3 months ago
Black people are taking hair WAY to seriously. It's just hair.
DayeDayeX 3 months ago
@DayeDayeX no different than why people SHOULD take their health seriously. As trivial as hair may seem to some, African Americans hair is the most unique and used to be very important to the status the woman. Back in the day AAs began to straighten their hair in order to fit in to what Caucasians believed was beautiful. AAs were considered ugly if their hair was of it's natural texture. It's 2011 and it's about time we let go of trying to fit in and be proud of who we truly are foremost.
DJDProductions 3 months ago
@DayeDayeX Secondly, the chemicals that make up relaxers have been proven to destroy the scalp and cause serious damage to the scalp and hair. To me, that more than enough reason to stop using it. Ultimately, I believe it's because of the history behind why we started and why many still fill the need to continue relaxing our hair that we take it so seriously. Life is to short continuing to do something that is damaging and expensive in order to maintain the status quo.
DJDProductions 3 months ago
@DayeDayeX I've spoken to many women who told me they still can't wear their hair natural in the work place because they feel discouraged by their coworkers and employers. It's ridiculous. There's no other ethnicity in this country that has to hide there natural self in order to get a job.
DJDProductions 3 months ago
I really feel you. I always thought my hair wouldn't be manageable in its natural state because it was too thick and coarse and that held me back from going natural. It wasn't until i began to research it that i realized it was something i could do with the right knowledge of my hair.

@TheGr8testbeing Last I checked you don't regulate YT so I'll make whatever videos I wish just as you can.

MyrandaLuv1 8 months ago
@MyrandaLuv1 Who said anything about being pro black? What does that even have to do with wearing your hair in its natural state? Natural can look nice and put together just as people with relaxers can look a hot mess. Back in the day and even to this day, many women feel like they can't wear their hair natural because it makes their white coworkers uncomfortable. This is very much the case in many cities. Thankfully I live in Atlanta where it's now the norm to see natural hair wherever you go.

1titans 9 months ago
People need to sit down because unless your mother managed to relax your hair when you're still a fetus, we're all born natural. It's just a choice as to whether you want to stay natural or not.
Dark0Malkavian 9 months ago
@Dark0Malkavian It's just unfortunate when you're too young to make the choice and your parents make it for you. It's sad when I see kids barely old enough to talk with a relaxer.

@DJDProductions You are correct that's why my wonderful middle back length hair started to fall out because of those stupid relaxers!!!
I just cut off all of my hair it was reduced from middle back length to neck length so I cut off all my hair until it looked like it was shaved.
And within a year my head went from shaved bald to neck length, and guess what?, my hair is relaxer free!
Oh sure my black relatives want me to relax it again but I sternly tell them NO!!!

WAKE UP!!
Born2Flesh 1 year ago

4th ure rite race isnt a science although its been made 2 b by racist wp & ... contd

IsisAmtiess 1 year ago
@IsisAmtiess I never said it was easy. It takes a lot of work and trial and error. I think most naturals have gone through or are still going through the same thing you are. I was relaxed for a good portion of my life, so I had to learn what to do with my hair because my mom used to take me to the salon to get my hair pressed. Everyone's hair is different though sometimes similar in some ways. Keep experimenting. I have lots of friends who just get their hair flat ironed which is an option.
DJDProductions 1 year ago
I support what your saying, but don't think it is so simple. Basically, I had been getting relaxers my entire life, until 2 1/2 years ago, when I stopped. I have a different hair texture than both of my parents. My dad has thin, wavy hair and my mom- long straight hair. Neither of them knew what to do with my coily, thick hair- so I was given a relaxer, when I was 5 or six- then, when "necessary" from that point forward.
IsisAmtiess 1 year ago
I just wear a wig and I really does not care what people think, couple of white women at work ask me in front of people oh you got a new wig, people are stupid,at time I like to come back and say to her you need to lost those extra 300 pounds but I am at peace LOL

@Leilat4 lol yeah it's funny when people want to point out what others are doing but know they got issues themselves.
DJDProductions 1 year ago
The number 1 reason is because of the BIG CHOP!
I would be natural RIGHT NOW, if it wasn't for having to go bald or having only 2 inches of hair. It takes a good 2-4 years to transition into natural without the big chop.
maplemerry 1 year ago
@maplemerry I didn't want to do it either but after I got burned so bad from my last relaxer, I knew I didn't want to ever get one again, so I guess that was my motivation. I transitioned for 6-7 months and during the last 3, I wore micro twists. Bad idea because they broke off my edges. When I took them out I decided to cut the straight ends off. But If you're into wearing sew-ins, wigs or weaves, those are just some suggested options to get you over the TWA stage if you really want to do it.
DJDProductions 1 year ago
@maplemerry you dont have to Big chop to be natural just STOP getting relaxers, perms etc. the BC is a choice. Maybe you have rocked short hair before and want to try a BC but its not a rule to be natural. It doesn't take years either lol well it depends if you are looking for long hair. In that case it may. After 1-2yrs of trim'n a good blow out you should have a nice pony tail

@DJDProductions @Thunderbult3000 I hate when these discussions turn into this. This was actually the point I was making about how unproductive these discussions are. I think natural hair is beautiful and I admire those who make the transition b/c it's not easy. But the fact remains, women make the choices they make for various reasons. It's not always about being unenlightened or hating themselves or whatever else.
ajc1892 1 year ago
@ajc1892 The discussion was between myself and Thunderbolt, therefore it wasnt unproductive because it wasn't intended to be productive. That's what the video was for as well as everything else I do in my life that may open the minds of others.

@DJDProductions actually thunderbolt tagged me, so that was the discussion I was referring to. But anyway, this is clearly going nowhere. Your after pictures were quite nice either way. Peace.
ajc1892 1 year ago
@ajc1892 Undortunatelty most people are unenlightened on the subject. But if a person knows full well the facts about how damaging relaxers are yet still uses them I question their concern for their own health. Regardless people can do whatever they choose but that's no reason not to put forth the info.h

DJDProductions 1 year ago
@DJDProductions: Thats whats up... Big ups to ya... With everyone doing at least a little, many people have a great chance of being informed. Because like u've said & I've heard 100's of times before, most women just dont know about managing & styling their own hair in its natural state. And most of it is because their parents never showed/taught them. Many of them bought into the whole "quick fix" (so-called), to get that "European style" straight hair. Its all due to propaganda.
Thunderbult3000 1 year ago
This is a really good video, but I have to say, I don't understand why women who choose to go natural feel the need to denigrate women who continue to use relaxers. If you really feel comfortable in your decision, you shouldn't have to castigate the choices of other women in order to validate your choice. Women make decisions about their hair for a variety of reasons. It doesn't always come down to who is enlightened and who is not.
ajc1892 1 year ago
@ajc1892 Hmmmm. I don't think it's, to use your big word, "castigating" women who are relaxed. I think when women discover the facts about how damaging relaxers really are, and then experience how healthy, long, and strong their hair is now for the first time since before they started relaxing, they're just excited. As was in my case and many of my friends who have also gone natural.
DJDProductions 1 year ago
@DJDProductions Just as I am now very passionate about vegetarianism now that I've read the scientific facts of how eating meat is directly linked to cancer and many other health issues. My passion about what I now know (not believe) is why I want to pass that knowledge on to others just as it was introduced to me. There is so much people believe that is wrong, but if they did some research they would discover facts and know that things aren't what we've always believed them to be.
DJDProductions 1 year ago
@DJDProductions: I think its very interesting that every single time someone mentions to most of our Black women about things like this, which is very beneficial to her & her family, they view it as an attack or someone degrading them. WTF? Someone please tell me that the mental state hasnt diminished to such a low that "anything" pointed out is taken to a silly level. Come'on now. Just like some of my lady friends say, its crazy that they can highlight u, but no one can can say a thing to them.
Thunderbult3000 1 year ago
@Thunderbult3000 Yes this is the case with so many. Quick to disregard facts, and just blindly continue down a detrimental path just because that's what everyone they know is doing/the norm. People are amazed at how long and thick my hair has grown. The same people who didn't understand why I cut all my hair off, or why I stopped relaxing it straight, or had something negative to say about it. Those same people now either have nothing to say or are asking me how to get their hair like mine.
DJDProductions 1 year ago
@DJDProductions:" Those same people now either have nothing to say or are asking me how to get their hair like mine.' The ones speechless are usually ur haters, the others were just non-believers out of ignorance, now they know because u have talked the talk & walk the walk... Truth is most are just uninformed & just dont understand nor want to admit it. Being afraid of the unknown, people make plenty of excuses, laziness through conditioning, some are also scared to be somewhat original...
Thunderbult3000 1 year ago
@ajc1892: Your wrong about that one completely. It has everything to do with knowledge/being enlightened. Because when you are informed, and you understand, then you will not knowingly hurt nor damage yourself in any way such as this because you now know. And you will also be compelled to tell/teach others especially ones close to you. Imagine knowing a cure for a deadly disease, & watching others succumb to it right around u. Must decent people wouldnt do that... Its the same here.
Thunderbult3000 1 year ago
@Thunderbult3000 Exactly! Great analogy.

i feel that the pressure of society like what she said is sooo true. we believe that straight and long is defined as beauty like skinny and white. gladly people are slowly coming to own acknowledge what is right. i been away from the creamy crack for 2 yrs now but my hair is still not long. i must say its extremely healthy. i just keep playing with new ideas to grow it and care it. the key is make your hair your hobbie and most of all. DONT GIVE A ISH BOUT WHAT THE ANY ONE THINK WHEN U ROCK IT
cheekebaby 1 year ago
@cheekebaby As far as your hair not growing long, it's possible that you have split ends. When's the last time you went and got it trimmed? In order to gain length it's been my experience that you need to keep it moisturized, in protective styles to protect the ends as much as you can. I have been wearing two strand twists with lots of shea butter applied when twisting for almost a year now and my hair is about 11 inches long. That has been my main style. Just different executions of it.
DJDProductions 1 year ago
I agree with the lack of knowledge and management. It's kind of disappointing that a lot of black mothers don't want to take the time to do their little girl's hair and would rather take the easy - but harmful - way out with relaxers. I find mothers who do their hair with their daughters as a bonding experience (and it isn't the same when your ma takes you to the hair dresser). I guess I'm speaking out of personal experience, since my ma never got me a perm and she took the time to do my hair.

I still have alot of relaxed ends ,cant do big chop yet because I have bald spots so using castor oil to help. x
Relaxer I agree is the worst thing for my scalp I have been scared to go natural because I dont know how to look after it...
sassyblack123 1 year ago
@sassyblack123 Thanks. I used Hydratherma Naturals Daily Moisturizing Growth Lotion and Trader Joe's Nourishing Spa Conditioner. I still use these products now. Also, make sure to do deep conditioning often. In your situation you should consider cutting off the relaxer and wearing a wig or sew in until your hair grows back in, making sure to do regular maintenance and keep your hair clean and moisturized. It should grow in thicker and healthier.

Very well thought out vid from a very beautiful young lady. Well done.
maximuslyricus 1 year ago
@maximuslyricus Thanks Maxi! You know what's funny? I get compliments on my hair everywhere I go. From all races, men and women. People love my natural hair. When they're black women with relaxers and they tell me their hair won't look like mine, I am sure to always tell them every texture is beautiful and can be made to look attractive. I have extremely tight coils, the texture most woman think can't look beautiful, but I'm proof that it can. All it takes is education and patience.

how long does a take to transition a good amount of length? because i am transitioning and i am only 13 yrsss old i just started like 3 months aqo
chocolatecaramal1 1 year ago

Sinnerswing 1 year ago
@Sinnerswing

Why I think it takes black women so long to go natural
Because they want to be white, lololololol
StowneandIze 1 year ago
@StowneandIze It's not because they want to be white. They want the same type of hair marketed by fashion. White people aren't the only ones on the planet with "straight, silky, and smooth" hair - all of which are buzz words in the hair market.
mistakrunk 1 year ago
I totally agree with you on the knowledge and the products. I am soo soo happy that now natural hair is coming out in the media and print and there are products out there for us if we choose not to make them ourselves. GOOD VIDEO!!

"As children we don't really have control of our hair ... our parents have control"
So true! I had a relaxer put in my head at age 5 or 6 because my mother was "overwhelmed" with caring for three heads of African American hair (hers, mine and my sister's). I now really wish I had been given a choice instead of just having something that will take years to reverse forced on me.
anpvk7 1 year ago
@anpvk7 Yes! You totally understood what I was saying.
DJDProductions 1 year ago
@anpvk7 Thank you that is very true. We never grew up on how to grow our hair. So of course it would be hard. So was potty training , but you can go to the bathroom by yourself now right? What if that was our hair back then , being trained to take care of it. It would be a much better world for us. More saving from the products and Korean stores taking from the community would probably be gone cause the fake products they give us dont work on natural hair well.
HeirOfGlee 1 year ago
@HeirOfGlee I agree. This issue is not knowing which unfortunately goes even deeper than just our hair.

Your very good looking. You shouldnt care what your hair looks like.

girl i went natural last year and in 2 months it will be a year.. and my hair is already longer than what it was b4 i went natural. When i str8n it with my fingers it past my shoulders already...we can have long hair just have to take care of it with or without a relaxer ! its worth the time..
daristhe 2 years ago
It will be a year for me too in March and my hair is 8 inches and past my shoulders. I love it. I agree with you, either relaxed or natural you still have to really take care of your hair in order to retain length. I love the versatility you have being natural and I think my hair is too fine for a relaxer and that's why it broke off so easily when it was relaxed.

I love the natural look

One last thing
I think we need to keep the authority on our identity. We have our own uniqueness and our own footprint
We make other races think they are the shit because WE GIVE them honor. But they can never have hair like us.
Braids no matter what is always GOOD and HEALTHY even if its a weave it doesn't matter because braids are original to us African peoples.
DJD you look good too
Amerikaten 2 years ago
Thanks Amerikaten! I agree. Our hair is so unique and versatile. We should embrace that. We can do things no one else can do with their hair (when it's in it's natural state). As you can see from this video, I don't have a problem with braids or weaves when they done right. Even these you see were too tight & too small so they broke my edges off a bit. But when they're done right they are great as protective styles to leave your hair alone for a while.
DJDProductions 2 years ago
@Amerikaten yea ur right its not about weave or perms exactly its about how u wear it. but i alwaysthought perms make ur hair wavy. it does that to mine... until i flat iron it, lol.
JSkelentonKey 2 years ago
Perms are what people who have naturally straight hair use to make it curly or wavy. African Americans use relaxers to do just that, relax the curl or make it straight. Some people use the two terms interchangeably which is incorrect because they mean two different things.
DJDProductions 2 years ago
I just watched the movie " Good Hair " and it pissed me off a little. I never knew the hair game went this deep probably because I'm a male.
But anyway thank DJD for even trying to wear your real hair.
I begged my girlfriend to wear her real hair long before I learned all this stuff and I had to bribe her with gifts and treats to get her to do it. I liked her real hair because she looked HOT wearing her real hair and not because I hated the weaves.
Amerikaten 2 years ago
Her main problem was that it was hard and time consuming to have to fix your hair every day while maintaining the style it is in. And she wanted to wear her hair in many different ways which caused a lot of stress trying to be creative. So I just shut up cause I saw how hard it was. As a black male I had my time wrestling with hair too. I just cut my hair off got a brush and some pomade and a wave cap. And do the same routine everyday.
Its way tuffer for a women on many different levels.
Amerikaten 2 years ago

CurlyTopLori 2 years ago
Thanks Lori. Your daughter's hair is beautiful and so many other women have no idea what their natural hair really looks like because they've been relaxed as long as they can remember.

mY PROBLEM is when black women need a break from these things or can't do them and completely damage their scalp to the point a of bald in envie of something they don't have
cvzdez 2 years ago
I think the hair thing is deeper then that bsanonymous. For one you have to accept you hair to some extent b/c not all blacks can use chemicals to straighten their and the barids thing not all women can take that tension on their scalp, then what do you do. I see a lot of black women going bald from the perm and the chemicals causing mild to saveire burns,
cvzdez 2 years ago
i think this natural hair thing is about the pain we have suffered from the hatred against our hair. Any other race of women can walk outside with their hair in its natural state and nothing gets said. A black woman does it and her hair is nappy, shes pro black, or blah blah blah. The problem is that too many black women are ashamed of their natural hair and look down on those who choose to wear theirs natural. Its a mental thing that black people go through hun!
kiera843 2 years ago
Thank you! Well put. I don't need to say anything more.
DJDProductions 2 years ago
your welcome. It wasnt an option and black people need to look into this more...
kiera843 2 years ago
instead of just going with the flow of society. Im not saying that all black women should be natural but its a problem when too many dislike their hair because of what THEY WERE TOLD... and what society deems as beautiful
kiera843 2 years ago
Yes that is exactly the point I was trying to make. To get women to really examine why it is we do the things we do.
DJDProductions 2 years ago
yeah. I guess some people just get accustomed with what they are use to doing and sometimes you just want be able to save or help or open up people as much as we would like
kiera843 2 years ago
Yeah that's all I'm trying to do but many people feel threatened for whatever reason. Just like I wish everyone would stop smoking there will still be many people who will despite the proven health risks. Can't win em all.
DJDProductions 2 years ago
You are absolutely right!! The root of the issue is too many of us have mental issues regarding "good" vs "bad" hair. We've been conditioned to think that nappy hair is ugly and unacceptable. It has got to stop!

I wanted a relaxer when I was younger and my mom said HELL NO. I'm so glad she did that for me! she loved my hair texture, and she had relaxers and it damaged her hair and she didnt want that for me. I rather just press my hair once or twice a year and then still have my curly hair when it gets wet, its the BEST of both worlds
Chrissystina22 2 years ago
Had my mom known well how to take care of my hair in its natural state when I was younger I would have never gotten a perm, but because she didn't know I didn't know so the easiest thing was to go with the trend and relax. Even back before I relaxed I wanted curly hair and I always thought it was beautiful, so had I known what I know now I would have never relaxed.

so will your new growth grow and come in even with the hair weave in your hair?
kookie2100i 2 years ago
Hair continues to grow with weaves or extensions because it grows out of your head from the root not from the ends of the hairs. I only had the twists in for 2 months so my hair only grew an inch. Mine and most people's hair grows about a half an inch a month.
