pentatonic superimpotion is sooo old man, very very cool, but dont say you took it to the other level; great old news; i still love how this guy plays
So therefore, what is the one thing everyone should have learned from watching this video? Well, the fact that Allan Holdsworth sounds like Allan Holdsworth and Alex Machacek sounds like Alex Machacek. If you learn nothing else from now on, don't ever forget that one simple lesson.
great player... but to sound like that. I'm pretty sure beginners are going to need to know something about all the modes, including the melodic and harmonic minors,...and, with that knowledge, you might not be considered a beginner anyhow
yeah picking at face melting speed doesn't equate into music, only guitar language. Listen to Coltrane is you want to hear pentatonic scales put to great musical use, but you probably wont.
@MrFigueroa007 Alex doesn't sound like Allan at all. His approach and playing is different as well as his sound. You as well as many others on fusion.net loose as usual on this issue. It's amazing how many guitar "players" no nothing at all about sound. No wonder Allan got rid of the message board on the realallanholdsworth website. Anyways, I agree with Alex in that his video is superior in not using some circus shred fest competition like so many do.
@lauriemonk Actually it was called fusenet. A forum devoted to a bunch of geniuses trying to analyze Allan Holdsworth, and his supposed "influences". It was also an arena dovoted to sharing grievances against, as well as bashing fans of Ynwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and Rush, as well as each other. Proof that trashy reality TV isn't just limited to television. Fortunately, it is now defunct, best gone and forgotten, before Allan had his own website made.
He has obviously been influenced by Holdsworth. Smooooth legato.
Very nice tone (and I just adore those Godin guitars).
I really like listening to such things but not for too long, though - after awhile it's rather refreshing to switch over to something quite different and simple, like J.J.Cale or something.
LOL... I prefer to think about this a musical journey. The journey into the fusion world is one of the best I ever made... and this is why I love this sort of playing so much. It does take some time to get there though.
@guitaristman23 the journey to fusion is not something I can give you... all I know is something clicked one day for me on an old UK track Nevermore... I had heard it hundreds of before... Then this one time I flipped, I got it and bought every Holdsworth CD I could lay my hands on. Interestingly I found that it enabled me to listen to more popular music in a new light too.
@lauriemonk the excact same thing happened to me.i came across alien hip hop by planet x and i just fell in love with the hole thing. and i have allso listened to some music in a new light,
Don't you mean ignoramus? Which i'm not. There is nothing wrong with my sound card thanks. I know what he was playing,I was just saying its not for me,as I'm sure other styles arn't for you,I was just putting my own personal opinion to it,I know it takes a lot of time and dedication to play like this but it's just not me.
@krj85 You are one of the few who put this whole thing into perspective. Unlike so many in the fusion forums who pathetically tried to give their technical reasons as to why they didn't like Allan Holdsworth. The "arguments" went off into nowhere. Just as you don't prefer this approach, Alex's music struck a nerve with me because of style, feel, and sound. There isn't much out there that I would pay to go see, and I would order tickets to see Alex, although I doubt he would come here.
you are always welcome to have an opinion haha you probably don't like many guys like Alan Holdsworth or Shawn Lane either though since they are also very much jazz fusion players
@peanutbuddha he must of been talking about shawn lane.................LOL, but shawn lane had nothing but good things to say about this guy..........
Excellent phrase ' relaxed speed ' to describe his playing, particularly his fast playing. I might even call it speed that breathes, sounding so natural and organic.
why does everyone have to pick on the 80's??

The new Holdsworth. This guy is great but i think he needs more development in his own tone instead of sounding like Holdsworth.
