honestly they have no idea what they're talking about. samoans dont raise their sons to be a fa'afafine and not all samoans accept the fa'afafine life style. while i was living in samoa most of the fa'afafine in my school were bullied and beaten either by other boys or their fathers. i find this offensive for them to say that we raise our boys as fa'afafine is so wrong!!
So what is the lie? And what is so offensive about Mead's comments regarding the fa fafines? How are they being exploited? Back your shit up so others get what your talking about you idiot.
All this is a test from God, or the gods, or Krishna, or our Buddha-minds, or Shiva. So long as our minds keep judging, more and more situations to provoque our judgement appears. Once we deal with our own minds and find peace, even the concept of "allowing each person to live the way they want" do not arise, because there would be no need to it. Can humanity not be trained in the right direction, instead of focusing on vanity?
Every one has a right to create and live the life they wish - it is there god given right, cosmic right, human right - politicians, religious institutions has no right to say what people should or shouldn't do with their OWN lives. Killing other people is wrong - transgender into woman and man - dosent kill any one, they just live as they wish, who you are you to judge them what to do them with their OWN lives? Judge not and ya shall not be judged the same way.
I want do dress and look like a man ( but not be a one) and be in a relationship with straight man who wants me for looking and behaving like a man but still... as a woman? How do you call that.
there are many diffrent veiws here, i think, but i dunno whats real and whats not. someone explain what Fa'afafine realy are, cus i keep seeing comments saying the documentary is wrong.. i would like to know the real details here.
Everyone needs to know this, even the creators of this video: These are not men with a sex change, they are women born with a birth defect. Your sexual organs dont make you a woman or man, its your mind and how you think. These woman have real women brains.
Disturbing. Samoans really don't raise you up to be like that. In any society, we all want what's best for you. If being a faafafine makes you happy, and you're a boy who wants to be a girl then we'll support you but we won't raise you to grow up like that. We'll raise you up with love no matter what your choices in life may be.
Hello, some ten years ago I read in a magazine about the culture fa'afafine and today I am researching more about this culture. I am Brazilian and I specialize in gender and sexuality. We know very little or nothing about this culture and I'm gathering material to disclose where in the course study and this video is one of them. Hugs Jana
Samoan people do not "encourage" their son's to become a "fafafine" ... I'm deeply offended by this narrators comment, he should get his facts right before screening it.
yes fa'afafine literally means like a woman but it still dosent take away the fact that its "still" a man attracted to to other men. no judgement here just saying.
Samoans encourage the family to have a fa'afafine? This is DEF wrong. Wow, I just ... This is just exposing people who feel outcast to make some story for NG. Yes, Samoans are accepting but I'd say a lot of this is wrong.
This is an unbelievable exploitation of indigenous people. Stop making up crap about us and just ask us. Margaret Mead made up some incredulous things about Samoan people, because Samoans did not respect her field of "anthropology". This idiot anthropologist did not at all realize that these Fa'afafine was making up a story to be interesting to her. I am an advocate for transgender rights and lies like this documentary spreads only further surpesses those rights.
i don't think our parents or whoever encouraged us to be fafafines. it's more like accepting us for who we are. now some families do not like it and some are very understanding! but its never encouraging us, so its a bit exaggerating in dat part! but hey we are all God's people and we should all love one another! We are all made out of God's own image. so if u call someone names, remember ur calling God names!!! think about it....
i asked my dad and my auntie and my friends if they ever heard of this claim. they all looked confused. they are from samoa and never heard of this either. this is some BULL SHIT. i got fafafine friends and they even said this video is putting a "20" on a "10". in other words they are completely exaggerating
That young boy is clever at the end of the video. You know what I find sad? Sina was deprived having to grow up and become a real man. He was put in the position of confusion even before he developed a mindset of decision making.
is there a word for someone who feels that he/she is both and neither at the same time? Like one day a happy male, the next a happy female? And who thinks of him/herself as such at the time?
@rsheck.. malas dont take the beauty away from the real samoan girls. speaking as one myself. we are not gay and not to be conceited but most malas are prettier then the real girls..
@emeliahearts there is nothing in my comment that says anything about Sina being forced to be a fa'afafine. I said maybe in her case her family raised her that way. As it appears so in the documentary the her fa'afafine aunt raises her that way. I happen to know that family and they are lovely people..
@Shebanish i know :) i didn't say that you said that. and yes, im sure they are lovely people. i was just pointing out that the documentary doesn't provide enough evidence that samoans purposely raise children to be fa'afafine. ehh who knows?
@Shebanish I have the same belief. I am samoan and I've lived in AS my entire life, and not once have I heard of a Samoan family PURPOSELY raising their child to be a fa'afafine. i I disagree with the concept of Samoans raising a son to be a daughter, but of course, there are exceptions to every situation so there's a possibility that someone might have. I don't believe it was common practice though-- like I've said, I've never actually heard of anything like it.
@lamositele **CONTINUED** ..... don't have evidence to support the claim that samoans purposely raise their children to be a fa'afafine. in my opinion, the makers of this video only used that claim to get more attention from the audience. they're making the generalizations, and theyre trying to make it seem like sina's confirming it. such manipulators lol
@lamositele i agree with you when you say that samoans dont purposely raise their kids to faafafines. it's totally not prevalent in the samoan culture. but, like you implied, there could be exceptions to this case. but i dont think sina is that exception. sina doesnt EXACTLY say that she was "forced" to be a fa'afafine. if you look listen carefully, she doesn't explicitly or implicitly say anything of the sort. they (the ppl behind this documentary)
I hate hate hateeeeeee that eerie music in the background. Especially when the boy is proclaiming he doesn't want to be a Fa'afafine. It makes it seem as though this is something sinister, something that is being forced. There are versions of this excluding the music.
Alot of pacific anthropologists are very behind in this specific topic. This practice of raising the youngest male as a Fa'afafine has practically vanished. It is now no longer forced onto children, they are just born gay.
I don't think so. Gender identity is established in the brain and happens to be determined during the embryonic phase due to the hormones we are exposed to. Usually the body is adapted to the g.i. But sometimes the body doesnt fit the mind due to a hormonal aberration. Therefore, having a male body and a female g.i. doesn't make s.o. inevitably gay because g.i. and sexual orientation are two different things.
Gay: Gender identity and sexual orientation of the same gender.
In my opinion fa'afafine is being gay. True, some fa'afafine's do some jobs better than girls, but at the end of the day its still a man wanting to be a woman. I dont believe that families in Samoa raise some of their kids to be fa'afafine's, maybe in Sina's case but dosen't speak for all Samoan families. Same goes for women wanting to be with other women or be like a guy it is still considered gay or lesbian.
@lamositele let me just say that in our language there is no word for gay or lesbian which is evidence in itself that sexual preference means nothing to our ancient parents. it was normal. As in many cultures the introduction of chirstanity changed that. Fa'afafine does not mean gay it means to act as or be like a woman. yes there's confusion in the documentary but the point is that we do not judge our sister brother's. There are fa'afafine's who are attracted only to women.
@patrick10001 my friend, lets not be hasty to call religions like mine "cancer". its offensive, and it totaly destroys the message we send of love, happiness, and peace. in the old days, we may have made a few mistakes, but do not be quick to condem us, i beg. it just hurts us and does nothing good for anyone.
You can't exactly say that they are homosexual. They identify as FEMALE, and usually choose to be with STRAIGHT MALES. You cannot accept other cultures without accepting homosexuality, especially when homosexuality is prevalent in ALL cultures and has been since the beginning of time.
Fa'afine in my opinion is a result of Samoan GAY Men looking for a cover up or an excuse to be who they are. Why not just say your GAY!! They big thing that bothers me with these FA'AFINEs or MALAs; is that they give real true beautiful Samoan girls a bad reputation. The're openess about sex even motivates other real females to lower there standards and way of life.
you have to accepting to other cultures. gender and sexuality is socially constructed. just because america would view them as gay, doesn't mean other countries have the same viewpoint. be more open minded to other views and especially other cultures. get some education and stop having a one minded perspective. many of these people are raised with it being acceptable unlike it being acceptable in America. we all define sexuality and gender differently.
I do accept other cultures, but do not accept "homosexuality". If all of the world were homosexuals, there would'nt be reproduction and therefore no population, there would'nt be a world. I SWEAR, the day someone tells me, a male impregnated another male, or a female impregnated another female IS THE DAY I WILL TOTALLY ACCEPT "HOMOSEXUALITY"!!!!
Oh puhleeze. Who cares if YOU accept homosexuals or not? There's nothing more hilarious than a suddenly self-righteous straight who thinks he holds a magic peepee.
By the way; what is your response to my saying that transgender give REAL SAMOAN girls a bad reputation???
I highly believe they do, the way they dress is not as conservative as a real girl does. They tend to show off a lot more skin and appear more sexually appealing. Also, transgenders highly look at sex differently. For example, a guy dressing as a girl still has the sexual urge of a guy.
From one, so what you're really trying to say is that Samoan girls do not dress as bad as fa'afafines? Again I shadow the illusion. Let me remind you that fa'afafines do much better of a job in most cases than girls. Not to under estimate them, but it is in fact the truth of the matter. I love how you capitalize the words REAL GIRLS? Consider watching the clip one more time, listen carefully, broaden your mind, have a clear understanding, AND THEN pass judgement.
maybe yes for a cross dresser but not for a transexual. you do not have the male sexual aggression. Most transexual people dress to the norms of society and have normal jobs. its just the ones that are openly different that make TV. understand?
I am sorry to shadow the illusion, but fa'afafine is not a result of gay men looking for a cover up or excuse to be who they are. Have you not considered this video? Have you not once thought of a "woman trapped in a mans body?". I would like to hear your opinion on my definition of a fa'afafine.
