Many Americans were upset that concessions were made to Insurance and Pharmaceutical companies. When the 16th ammendment was "ratified" the highest income tax was at 1/4% The republicans wanted to change the sixteenth ammendment before it was ratified so that it would never be set higher than 2% and they were laughed at being told that it would never get that high. How many people dream of 2% taxes these days? I wouldn't mind 10% But currently my taxes are over double that.

@mrsockhandy do you realize the effect tax rate for the top 20%, in TOTAL federal taxes, has barely changed? it's dropped from 27.5% in 1979 to 25.8% in 2006. the total effective federal tax rate for TOTAL taxes for the entire country has dropped just 1.5% from 22.2% in 79 to 20.7% in 06. in the mid 1984 the total effective federal tax rate on the top 1% was 27.7%, now it's 31.2%. the rich have a higher effective tax rate, which is all that matters; they are paying a higher % of their income now

By any measure that you would like to use, taxes are lower today than they were in the 80's. As a percentage of GDP taxes are lower than they have been in 60 years. These guys have no clue what they are talking about when it comes to taxes. In reality they don't mind big government, they just want a different big government, that spends money on what they want money spent on.

Many Americans were upset that concessions were made to Insurance and Pharmaceutical companies. A lot of support was lost for the lack of a public option and true Universal coverage. 63% of the American population was NOT against Universal Health Care conceptually.
If it was in reference to the war - the previous president did the same thing.

When the 16th ammendment was "ratified" the highest income tax was at 1/4% The republicans wanted to change the sixteenth ammendment before it was ratified so that it would never be set higher than 2% and they were laughed at being told that it would never get that high. How many people dream of 2% taxes these days? I wouldn't mind 10% But currently my taxes are over double that.

@mrsockhandy do you realize the effect tax rate for the top 20%, in TOTAL federal taxes, has barely changed? it's dropped from 27.5% in 1979 to 25.8% in 2006. the total effective federal tax rate for TOTAL taxes for the entire country has dropped just 1.5% from 22.2% in 79 to 20.7% in 06. in the mid 1984 the total effective federal tax rate on the top 1% was 27.7%, now it's 31.2%. the rich have a higher effective tax rate, which is all that matters; they are paying a higher % of their income now

@mrsockhandy just do a google search that says "CBO effective federal tax rates 1979-2006" and click the third link, it's all right there on that page. marginal tax rates dont determine what the total % of your income you are paying to the government. the top 1% are paying more now than they did back then, not less. they're also shouldering a MUCH larger share (% terms) of the total federal tax burden

The primary problem is that these people are educated (if you can call it that) by Glen Beck. Glen Beck is a talk show entertainer who has to say outrageous crap in order to keep his ratings up.
