...in Yuja's rendition we got the "bubbly vivacity" you are supposed to hear in your Mendessohn, but here LL gives us this shrill, mechanical pounding...how did LL ever get his reputation for being ANY kind of a pianist?...are ALL of his audiences out of their minds?...
Some of these comments are downright silly. This is well known in the piano world as a "beginner's piece" that is built around arpeggios and scales (I played it with an orchestra when I was 15 and I'm no professional, which explains why it's not heard much in concert halls. Lang Lang is obviously having a lot of fun with the elementary pieces, and manages to find nuances that have escaped the standard recordings (e.g., Jose Iturbi, Ania Dorfmann).
i much rather prefer yuja...both are great but when u see yuja I* feel like she puts alll of her emotions when she plays and you can see it in her face.. she completely enjoys playing not to say that lang lang doesnt it just looks overdone lol
well obviously this guy isn't good at anything cos he doesn't focus or study any composers deeply. see the way he just plays every composer's song casually, it really sounds like circus music to me
I would say this is a sparkling performance with excellent orchestral support but the trouble for Lang Lang is that he has been marketed like a pop singer and has aroused the musical establishment's anger in consequence. Yes, he may wear a traditional Chinese dress and play about on the keyboard but despite all that, he is an amazing pianist with a terrific technique. Few, if any of his detractors could play as well as he does. Deutsche Gramophon sign's only the greatest performers.
Anyone get the impression LL is just toying with this, having a good time, experimenting with what he get get away with as far as dynamics, nuance, even flippant gestures go. Probably not a bad thing. This is just fluff in the world of music heavyweights, so why not tease the audience with some superficial entertainment.
The problem is which suit is considered formal. His suit is considered formal by the concert hosts and most of the audience. While your cowboy dress is not.
@koalaswrath well there are more than one kind of Chinese dress and this one is a formal dress. I don't think cowboy hat and jeans are even considered formal in Texas.
I want to be careful with this comment but I felt strongly that I HAD to make it. I was never a great fan of Lang Lang and often understood the negative reactions of many people about his antics - but honestly - having seen and especially heard how he played this piece I have to say it was brilliant !! Anybody know why the orchestra was apparently reluctant to rise during the applause ?? Thanks for uploading !!
@mortalfrog0815 Those are Chinese formal clothes. I don't know if you were kidding, but if not, I have one thing to say to you. Before you say they're pajamas and show your ignorance, do some research please. Thanks! Good day! If you were kidding, then just disregard the above. ;D
you deaf fools. Listen to how he mixes harmonies. This pianist even on an off day has a gorgeous sound and the drive here and exact distinct fingerwork. This is fabulous playing! You people don't know much!
@lovesGenet finally someone who gave a good comment, i'm sick of everyone giving negative comments on lang lang, he's a great pianist, maybe no horowitz, but he enjoys it, plays great and i bet none of the people come close to his playing (and if some one don't agree with me, just prove me wong)
He reminds me of Chico Marx here. I have great respect for Lang Lang as a pianist and musician, but this performance is really disheartening. He just sits there grimacing in his lovely silk smock and makes a travesty of the piece. And he doesn't even play at tempo. Just go to George Li and the Miami Symphony to see how this piece should go (Li, by the way, has taken a master class from Lang Lang). There are some great things by this artist on YouTube, but this is definitely not one of them.
I agree 100% with chuckles543 ...and yes, the so-called "best drivers" (nasty critics) you usually do not find behind the wheel but either in the passenger's seat or on the side of the road, and most of them do not have a drivers license or even know how to start the engine, so go figure!
with lang lang, theres that erratic odd loud sounding note. and his appegios and scales are always rushed. I say that his technique is flawless and notes are clear and true. However as cowrb has said, music is not a sport.
I agreee with berlinzerberus, it sounds like Tom and Jerry. I don't even dare say that Lang Lang isn't an outstanding pianist, but this one sounds very very superficial and seems to me he thinks (and it's true) he can play it easily and doesn't really enjoy the piece but he enjoys managing playing it fast and clear. But music has to do with emotion it's not a sport (my opinion)
I don't agree with you. Basketball players love to play basketball. That's the same thing.
To me, playing a piano is like a sport, too. Sport does not mean it is violent, but because you need to use your whole body, your soul, your spirit!
Playing the piano is not playing a babbie doll, although you use the same word "play". Playing the piano is not only a movement of your finger, or arm.
Didn't you see Kissin sweating when he plays? Why couldn't we say it is a sport?
Gabriel is saying that you know nothing of virtuosity and music; and I tend to agree. What fault do you see in this music? This movement is playful and virtuosic, something that Lang Lang's playing exemplifies. I'm sure if you didn't know it was Lang Lang, you would say it was a fine interpretation. Not the best, but certainly not "pure shit". Most people like you are either racist, dislike Lang Lang's facial expressions, or are just jumping on the hate Lang Lang bandwagon.
when people loose their arguments they often assume that the motivation of someone to judge could be 'rassist'.i only can say it isnt, but it´s pretty obvious that langlang is not the best musician of the world.there is n o virtuosity without musical background at least in classical music except those of mediocre composers.
...in Yuja's rendition we got the "bubbly vivacity" you are supposed to hear in your Mendessohn, but here LL gives us this shrill, mechanical pounding...how did LL ever get his reputation for being ANY kind of a pianist?...are ALL of his audiences out of their minds?...
