  • What a performance. Brava. This is the first time I have ever her sing, and I'm impressed

  • I saw her Rosina at Covent Garden back in 2006.

Still the most remarkable performance I have ever heard.

  • Un-frickin'-believable! I just heard she will be in SF next season! Yeah! I'm "there!" Thank you, Joyce, for this great performance and the love you exude! Whoo-hoo!

  • BRAVA!!!!!!

  • did anyone else notice they put "Giacomo" Rossini on the title when she began the aria?

  • @umroo2014 I did. He he.

  • Brilliant! What a star.

  • Joyce, youa re superb, but I wouldn't have said "Yes" to them. If they chose another singer instead of you in the first place ans she dropped out, the hell with them!

  • Some free-spirited singing!

  • That expression/gesture at 4:42 - wonderful. I can't even count how many times I've watched this.

  • She is perfect, and the cellist on the right ( Joyce's left) is kinda cute

  • I can't say enough positive things about this woman. As a "baby mezzo," Joyce will always and forever be my inspiration and my muse. The perfect Rosina!!! Her ornamentations and choice of tempi are impeccable and original. Move over, Bartoli - it's DiDonato's turn!

  • ah, wow. this actually made me cry i loved it so much! lol amazing. <3

  • This gives me chills EVERY time I listen to it. I love her...

  • Bravisima!

  • Perfetto! Grazie mille!

  • This is simply amazing. And it gets better every time I listen to it. Oh wow. :)

  • Opera singers used to know when they had really made it into the big league because they would be booed at La Scala. Nowadays they get trashed by armchair experts on youtube.

  • just died

  • the best Rosina :)

  • bravissima! ma in questo ruolo preferisco la Battle.

  • soprano.

  • i had the pleasure of hearing her sing beatrice at hgo and i was blown away!!!! she is the embodiment of coloratura mezzo!!!!!!!!

  • I really like her voice and the little acting bits during the song and her attitude at the end when she thanked the orchestra and the maestro. Does anyone know any other songs that she does really well?

  • "always laughing like an idiot (american!)"

reribus, really! Such generalizing! Americans are always laughing or Americans are all idiots?.....or both.

  • WTF my favorite version of this arias has always been callas at Paris, wow but this woman blew me away and gave the goosebumps, what an amazing artist. She is a true diva.

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • She is clearly in command of her voice and artistry. If you don't like something she does out of personal preference, that is fine. However, the negativity some of you display betrays your insecurity and small minded mentality.

  • Di Donato has indeed got a great voice with great agility and beautiful colouring. I have heard her live many times for over 10 years but lately she has developed a mannerism which I find very annoying. She does a little flutter which isn't quite a trill in the most inappropriate places. I have heard other singers do this and don't know what it is about. It spoils the line of the music. And it not in any score. Do they all go to the same music coach who teaches them to do that? What for???

  • the best Rosina

  • Beautifull ,such a great perform , thanks dear......

  • a true diva. a real live goddess

  • she knows what she is singing about!!! the last stanza is sung as i have never heard before!!! DiDonato is a great artist!

  • she is so incredible. i can't even stand it sometimes!

  • @rlane91 My conductor used to say if you're not spitting you're not singing correctly :)

  • What all of us think means bunk....just listen, is it that hard? Just listen, and move on!

  • It's the first time ever I've broken into laughter just from hearing/seeing her, and not because of the character, the scene or storyline. This is beyond amazing!!!!

  • good, bad to much american

  • @reribus

yes she is very talented but she has a tendency to give interviews - she has even made an incredibly stupid Youtube channel where she manifests herself - you know without make up like Netrebko (who looks like a Russian cleaning lady without the make up!) answering questions like Whats your favourite this...

Can you imagine Callas or Sutherland in youtube discussing what eyeliner they use?

  • @LohengrinT Her channel is hardly about what makeup she wears! She gives a lot of insights into all the "behind-the-scenes" aspects, which I'm sure aspiring singers must find useful. I certainly find it interesting and I can't sing a note. You seem to think it's all about self-promotion. Maybe if she started going on about her private life in the vein of celebrities I might agree with you, but she doesn't.

  • @CalumCookable

Indeed the one talking about her make up is Anna Netrbeko - I mean dont these people have anyone to advise them not to publicize their stupidity that much?

At DiDonato's age and her absolute vocal prime she should be inside a chamber learning and performing new interesting roles and not talking to cams for the Internet. Besides is anyone stupid enough to think that success will come if they follow her advice!!? Totally idiotic stuff :/

  • @LohengrinT I'm pretty sure she's not just sitting by a webcam doing absolutely nothing. She is in the midst of several roles and contracts. She is taking the time to talk to young aspiring artists. Sure, not all of them will make it, but she is being kind enough to give the advice and some are smart enough to listen to an excellent professional. It isn't idiotic. She's giving advice that typically isn't shared outside the voice studio, without paying a pretty penny first.

  • @kittykyd15

if she were sitting by a webcam doing nothing she would need a psychiatrist

Nevertheless, imagine the great Greta Garbo or Maria Callas or Ava Gardner opening up their webcams and without make up siting and talking with net people? But ofc there is no comparison and I should be making such comparisons huh? It seems I expect too much from people :)))

  • @LohengrinT I just looked at Anna's channel. I don't think she deserves being likened to a Russian cleaning lady. Yes, the videos are light-hearted. So what? Don't you have a life away from work? I like the fact that they make these videos. It helps chip away at the popular perception of opera singers as (if I may borrow from a certain deluded singer's publicity bio) "histrionic and aloof", which can only be a good thing. It doesn't make them lesser artists.

  • @CalumCookable

it makes them look too human

    We need Magic!

  • @LohengrinT i know exactly what you mean and i couldnt agree more

  • @LohengrinT yes, great voice exhibition!!! but where is the music and a sens of music.....

  • @reribus

DiDonato has musicianship - she is a little light on the head always laughing like an idiot (american!) but she is a musician and a talented one - she just seems not to have anyone to advise her a bit about her public persona (or even worse she has the Met Queens advising her - worst possible choice)

  • @LohengrinT Bartoli doesn't laugh? DiDonato is "always" laughing? Not in Idoneneo. Don't talk like a fool.

  • @disneylandman66

well lets put it in another way - DiDonato's acting abilities are no better than the usual acting abilities of average opera singers which are minimum to none - but at least she has a very talented voice and a solid technique.

I am afraid though this "always laughing girl of next door" persona she is trying to create will have as a result exactly its aim: becoming the girl next door

I dont think she will progress above of Sondra's evolution :)))

  • Yes it´s true Joyce ... show must go on... you are great Joyce!!!! Because nothing can´t stop an artist with talent and responsability!!!

  • Wonderful! I'd travel 150 miles to hear her. But--I'd travel 200 miles to hear Kasarova sing this. Oh. Wait. I actually did do that!

  • her voice is similar to Cecilia Bartoli

  • @CastaDiva181

yes, except with more presence, support, projection, and technique.

  • @CastaDiva181

except with more presence, support, projection, and technique.

  • elina and joyce do it perfectly

  • Never heard it done any better.

  • @LeipzigC1 Maria Ewing

  • Oh my word. I LOVE HER.

  • check out those arms! not only can this girl sing, but i bet she aint taking shit from anybody!

  • I LOVE THISSSSS !!!!

SHE's the best on this ariaaaa!! ♫!!!

  • Extraordinaire !!!!!!

  • So happy I've had the pleasure of seeing Joyce perform not only this aria but this opera in person. Absolutely awesome.

  • ...ma se mi toccano dov'è il mio debole sarò una vipera, sarò!

e cento trappole prima di cedere farò giocar!!!

    :D

  • OMG 4:56 SWEET BABY JESUS.

  • @operaticxingenue CHRIST ON A BIKE! I thought Renee Fleming's top b flat in "Depuis le jour" opera gala performance was the definition of breath control, she's just been usurped. Holy mother of christ. AMEN

  • une très très jolie voix !

  • So animated and Entertaining!!! Some opera stars should take some keys from her. Her presenation is the best!!! Nicely done!!!

  • She is a pleasure to both listen to and watch : ) Yay!

  • What a charming lady...good pipes and she can act!

  • I only discovered her today and I absolutely love her!!!!!

  • I only today discovered her...

  • She is my favorite lyric coloratura mezzo out there. Bartoli's coloratura flutters too much for my taste and there is not much power in her low register. Joyce is the real deal from Octavian to Cenerentola

  • This is why we love opera...

  • Great

  • WOW! One of my favorite arias... And indeed is the best rendition ever. Bravo!

  • She's a sub for the night, but like a bench player coming in the game and just shoots the lights out.

    Bravo! Love it.

  • omg i came in my undies!!!!

  • Bravísimo!!!

  • 06:10 che agilità...

  • 6:10... che agilità!

  • 6:10... che agilità!

  • Wow.

  • @Ilesereine The show must go on! And what a show! Technique, sensitivity, incredible stage presence, Joyce is wonderful! Thanks for the recommendation, dear friend Ile!

  • This is exquisite. She's so expressive and musical. As a music student, I feel too often singing can become so much about technique and not expression. Her interpretation of this piece I feel captures all the artistry and musicianship that is is really essential to great singing. Love it!

  • La piu brava del mondo !

  • Those 5 dislikes can just keep listening to Miley Cyrus and Justin Beiber...

  • @Broadwaybaby9492 You're so damn fucking right!

  • @Broadwaybaby9492 It's 7 dislikes now. How can you dislike this? Mind-boggling. Joyce is a gift from God, end discussion, period. I have heard her in person 6 times altogether (twice in NYC, twice in Atlanta, and twice on a cruise in Atlanta). No one works harder during a concert. She is absolutely amazing.

  • She must `ve gotten into the sifth octave with this those stacatti, has`t she! B5 or C6? Exquisite performance! She and Kasarova are my favourite mezzo Rosinas.

  • Does anyone know who cancelled for this Tucker event so that we have the wonder of Joyce instead? I'm forever grateful for this and her "Crude furie degli orride abiss......"

  • Brava!!!!!!! so great mezzo!!!

  • ¡Bárbara!

  • i jujst adore Joycw--she is so very oood. We have some hope for the future of opera.

  • This artist is great. For my money, the best performance of this piece was recorded by Roberta Peters in 1956 at the Met and it demonstrated the incredible range she had at about 2:06 min into the performance recording. I can play the recording on Rhapsody but not here. Trust me. That performance is the gold standard for this piece with respect to both the sheer physical talent and training of the artist.

  • how ocme maria callas's version sounds different than this..did they like slow it down..i want to learn this peice for my school talent show

  • Wonderful, and also: perfect diction! See! It's possible to have a high woman's voice pronounce Italian so you can hear every word (I am Italian, so I do care about that...)

  • I could watch this perfection a thousand times and never tire of the humor and joy, this from someone who doesn't usually care much for Rossini. Heaven's gift plus untold hard work to command her blessed instrument. Endless thanks for sharing.

  • Absolutely great. This is just the perfect Rosina.

  • Damn!

  • COMPLETE PERFECTION!!!!!!!!!

  • I love the nod to Callas.

  • Perfection!!!!!!!!!!

  • Magnifique. Beautiful voice. Unique and Original. A very nice and heartful interpretation!

    Thanks for sharing it.

  • Rossini, in my view, is not that compelling...so how can this performance be so transporting? JD is pure heaven!!!!!!!!

  • it´s true..show must go on!!! great Joyce!!!!

  • best version of this aria....!!!!

  • Wow!!! impresionante!

  • Very good. But she doesnt make forget Maria Callas. I so much prefer Callas interpretation.

  • This woman is a superstar! There is no other singer I'd rather watch in an opera!

  • She is Rosina!

  • I am not a Rossini fan, yet why do I keep coming back to this? It is simply perfect and amazing singing.

  • She is so so so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!! have you seen the musiscians of the orchestra? they are also claping her!!!!!!!! I think Joyce is vocal and musicaly pefect!!!!!!!!!!

  • bravissima!!!! da paura!!!!

  • BRAVA !! perfect !

  • YEAH!!!

  • What a sweetheart! And what a voice! I am your newest fan, Joyce!

  • Like, WOW! She's really good.

  • Ha ha, I caught this: the banner at the bottom of the screen at 1:10 says "Giacomo Rossini" instead of "Giacchino Rossini"

    !!!

  • @temperanceluv81 omg that's soo true !! LOLL

... and it's Gioacchino Rossini to be exact ;)

  • Glissando at the beginning of some phrases...

  • bravissima!!!

  • Quelle voix et quelle interprétation, ça dépasse presque l'imagination.

  • wat a voice!!! an wat a range.!!

  • Does anyone know if the Tucker Foundation Gala's are available on DVD anywhere? I've checked Amazon, Ebay, and the foundation's website. Operatribute, did you just capture this from the television broadcast?

  • I am a huge new fan...WOW...I love this.

  • She's a sweet person into the bargain re: friends- always frosting on the cake. And THIS is as well sung as any in history, I'd bet -

  • truly superb@@

  • Joyce DiDonato is my hero... just putting that out there.

  • @mkurnat I saw her in concert in Kansas City (our hometown, even!) in February (on her birthday)... it was such a special day!

  • @mkurnat I saw her in concert in Kansas City in February. it was a special day because it was her birthday and she was in her (and my) hometown! :) I met her and got her autograph and she was the most pleasant person to talk to.

  • Bravissimo :)))

  • 5:26 her diction is so good that its actually coming out of her mouth!

  • Okay all of you opera buffs- why do most Rosinas drop the last 'farro' giocar' before that great last high note at the end of this aria. Even Ms. Callas did it. It seems to leave a weird gap where there should be none. Anyone?

  • yes it is not nice... I've heard it mostly in live performances, maybe to get prepared for the last note, but I'm not sure :-/

  • @TimNable It's totally optional to drop it and it's considered correct performance practice. It's partly to get ready for the last cadenza and it's allowed since it's just the same thing repeating over and over. In Bel Canto rep, certain cuts like that are allowed since it really is all about the beauty of the human voice instead of the repeating musical lines.

  • Joyce Di Donato is one of the most talented mezzos today who is commercially successful and justifiably so!

I wrote to her and she was SOOOoo gracious to write back to me as she has worked with my voice teacher on numerous projects and she was encouraging me!

  • Good golly... She sure made the orchestra work for it! I'm every bit as impressed with the conductor as with Joyce (who is always fabulous of course)

  • simply an amazing performance and what a voice!!

  • very beautiful! i think i rly like this mezzo :)

  • It looked like she was surprised by her last note there...

    :)

  • @temperanceluv81 It seems to me that the conductor kinda cut her off. He should've given her just a taaaad bit long to break there!

  • I had the privilege of hearing her sing this a few days ago at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. Simply perfection and she makes it look so easy. This will definitely be the song she is remembered by...and all others are compared to!! Brava!!

  • she is simply incredible!

  • Una verdadera mezzo de coloratura. espectacular

  • Brava Brava Flaherty !!

  • simplemente MAGNIFICA!!!!!! veo una y otra vez este video y cada vez lo disfruto más!!! Joyce es genial, su voz, su técnica y su interpretación son de gran calidad!!!!!

  • Maybe I should obtain some musical knowledge, as I don't know the difference between a lyric soprano from a dramatic coloratura (smiley). But I can certainly tell an expressive singer when I hear and see one. Very happy with this discovery, Joyce DiDonato!

  • I love this performance !!!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic!!! Oh my God!!

  • una grandissima Rosina!

  • wow she is reppin for all the Dramatic Mezzos out there. stunning!

  • I hope you're not talking about her voice. She is a coloratura or lyric mezzo. Zajick and Borodina are dramatics...check them out. There is more than a slight difference.

  • Haha no your not either a coloratura or a lyric mezzo thats like saying hes either a bass or tenor...whatever lol

its a matter or resonance andmovement.

  • she's a pure coloratura mezzo

  • oh didn't see the conversation continuing on.

She's got the agility needed for some coloratura roles, but the smoothness of a lyric. So I guess she's probably lyric with the ability to do well in coloratura roles. Her website doesn't really try to define her.

And in the end the Fac system is just loose suggestions anyways, if you can sing a role well it doesn't matter "what" you are. I heard Agnes Balsta sing Amneris better than almost anyone I'd ever heard, and she's hardly dramatic.

  • @katharineluvsopera I think you misinterpreted what I had meant. I meant she is a (coloratura or lyric) mezzo. As in, she's not a blow-your-ears-out mezzo, her voice is light and moves well.

  • She's either a coloratura or a lyric mezzo, but definitely not dramatic.

Dramatic mezzos are like Dolora Zajick or Fiorenza Cossotto, with a whole lot of umph behind their voices. (they typically sing Verdi or Puccini, not Rossini)

But lucky for us this was written for a coloratura mezzo (see Marylin Horne) and we get to hear this AMAZING rendition by DiDonato. She really owns this aria, I can't think of any currently performing artists who do it better.

  • wow! this is the best I have heard this aria performes, absolute perfection! Definately better than any soprano I have heard attempt this aria!

  • I'm in love.

  • best I have heard since Horne. Cellist is cute by the way as well- i agree

  • magnifique, quelle belle voix et expression corporelle

    a voir et à revoir....

  • Very gorgeous woman! Amazing voice, brava! Her interpretation I like even more then Callas!

  • Wonderful pure genius. She looks and sounds amazing. By the way, love that dress. Perfection!

  • una artista con todas las letras!!! magnifica!!!!!

  • éblouissant!

  • haha i hate her! her talent is superb and spectacular. At 4:55 or so, she just glides through the high notes as if it's nothing. Fantastic!!!

  • Ok people, you have just witnessed a demonstration of perfect vocal technique, musicanship and acting. Anyone feels like trying to top this? ... ... ... I didn't think so. :)

  • @lalagonegaga Love this comment! :)

  • @lalagonegaga actually I have someone in mind that can top it. Search for Mariana Popzlateva. She's on youtube

  • @lalagonegaga Not even cara mia Bartoli, who won the Lindororosini's performance contest on this aria. This rendition is far much more better!
