@OZRCosmicAntics as much as i appreciate your comment, i've seen squarepusher and he is a phenomenal bass player and my stuff does not hold a candle to his performances. he set the bar pretty high :)
Great vid! I'm a drummer/percussionist that's heavily rooted in acoustic drums, having just added some electronics to my acoustic kit. Because of this video, I can see a lot more possibilities for my bass and guitar amps, lol. I like the feedback sound- is that what you're doing when you up the gain on the amp to your left? Great stuff man.
@skategivnkids in this case it's sending a pulse of electricity to the modular synth every time it's hit. you can do many things with that pulse- in this example it's stepping a sequencer forward and triggering an envelope module.
@RawGreenTheAnimator i got some roland piezo drum triggers for a few bucks each and taped them to my drum heads (any surface you hit could work) then the signal from the trigger was connected to an input that can convert that "pulse" of energy in to something that the doepfer can use (gate signal) to cause any number of events to happen (in this case, sequencer stepping, and envelope triggering).
@skategivnkids Not entirely. Triggers are used mainly for metal concerts so you can here the bass drums or bass drum b/c it's so loud, but they can be used like in this video, which I find pretty cool! :)
@HandPeopleHandPeople yeah, from an amp or loudspeaker it can have enough volume to blend with the drums- it could come from any source though; Sometimes I'll just have headphones on.
@analogueak Metal type stuff, of course. I use the heel toe method and it's not really possible to get a lot of power out of that so it's hard to hear. That's what I want triggers for and I'm thinking a bass amp would be the best bet.
@HandPeopleHandPeople I guess it's an issue of what's practical for you: 1. To get more volume from your bass drum, you could mic it and run it to the PA system with the EQ enhancing the low frequencies.
2. To get a synth or computer to make a bass drum sound when you hit your bass drum, attach a trigger to the drum, then run the trigger to your "drum brain" or a device that has a trigger input, then run the device's output to the PA system or amplifier.
@HandPeopleHandPeople Mackey makes some nice speakers for a good price- a full range speaker could be used for more than just your bass drum, but a bass amp from Ampeg is really good too :)
Well I wish I could Afford Triggers for my drums. I have went though 2 Tama bass drums and I cannot get it to sound like my other one -which has a lower octave naturally- with any amount of tuning or heads. I don't really care for double bass pedals so this would cure that.
I dont get triggers, when I play shows all i need to do is mic my real kit and im good i understand triggers for electronic drums so when you hit it, it sounds the same each time but i dont know it doesnt make sense to me most drummers dont use triggers on their real kit like likin parks drummer etc all they do is mic their kit to me triggers are useless
lol i know this isnt supposed to be musical but its music to my ears lol i would buy an album of this over most of the ones out there i love the drumming man and your set up just adds to it
A pearl rhythm traveller... I have one of them... when I recently got my second bass drum I took some toms from it and a snare and added them to my kit.
This gives me very good ideas overall. I always thought triggers were limited only to be used as (more or less) drum tone replacement modules. But I'm assume you can really use them to trigger samples, sequences, etc. to become a one man band. This makes me want to learn drums more.
@MrBIueSky dude that guys is a fucking trip i was on shrooms and my brother put the come to daddy music video on and man i started crying and everything :OOO
actually i have the same kit and it's actually extremely good. its built so that the shells are extra thin for easy traveling and the only problem that i could find with it was that the cymbals that it comes with are not very durable, but that can easily be fixed by buying new ones. (also something i haven't done yet is buy a ride cymbal.) i think the set looks better if it was set up differently, and also probably sounds better if it was muffled and tuned correctly.
any good drummer could please awser my question which i posted as a video?( about bassdrum and triggers. just go to my profile to view it thanks its really appreciated!
old roland acoustic trigger - (it's actually just a piezo disc in a plastic case with a metal foot) i'm working on some homemade ones because they're really cheap
Question, can I use drum triggers plugged directly into my mixer, and than into my computer VIA firewire and use software such as drum superior 2.0 to mix tracks? Or will I still need a drum module pre-mixer?
haha, i didn't really notice that until you mentioned it. it does sorta look like it's in my setup. but it's a old-ass fan- fucking dangerous but heavy duty.

@analogueak Triggers are also used in metal. they send signal to a drum module that has professional- sounding kicks and toms. then sound goes to PA.

Does the sound come out of the amp? If so, for kick drum triggers, do you recommend a bass amp or any amp really?

@HandPeopleHandPeople yeah, from an amp or loudspeaker it can have enough volume to blend with the drums- it could come from any source though; Sometimes I'll just have headphones on.
analogueak 1 year ago
@analogueak So just for triggering the kick drum, any loud amp would be fine, bass amp or not?
HandPeopleHandPeople 1 year ago
@HandPeopleHandPeople it depends on the sound that you are using the trigger for. Keyboard amps have a good full range usually.
analogueak 1 year ago
@analogueak Metal type stuff, of course. I use the heel toe method and it's not really possible to get a lot of power out of that so it's hard to hear. That's what I want triggers for and I'm thinking a bass amp would be the best bet.

@HandPeopleHandPeople- are you talking about the little plastic/metal stickers that people put on the drumhead/pedal mallet? Do you mic your drums?
analogueak 1 year ago
@analogueak No I mean putting triggers on your kick drum only. No I don't have mics on my kick or any drum for that matter.
HandPeopleHandPeople 1 year ago
@HandPeopleHandPeople I guess it's an issue of what's practical for you: 1. To get more volume from your bass drum, you could mic it and run it to the PA system with the EQ enhancing the low frequencies.

the trigger just makes a spike of voltage (the up and down motion of the vibration gets picked up by the transducer- the piezo pickup)
so, i'm using it kinda as an on/off switch for my synth + it makes the sequencer move forwards.
