This film won awards when it was first released in 1952. Somebody needs to get busy and release this on DVD...looks like it might be happening since the movie is listed on Netflix but it's not yet available for rental.
Interesting. It connotes powerful shamanic overtones, and, in fact, bears some striking similarities with native American myth cycles, as well. =^[.]^=
No wonder, as Fenno-Ugric people and especially the Saame branch are distant relatives of native Americans. Glad you apparently like it. Valkoinen Peura is one of the rare gems amidst the endless and mindless B-comedies and stereotypical country romance dramas in Finnish film of the fifties.
Excluding Unknown Soldier from the above, of course.
The film, itself, has a stark, compelling element to it; it must have really stood out among the alternative fare of the time as you describe it. Occasionally a work like this rises about the cultural dross of any country.
Well, if you want to pick nits, all homo sapiens sapiens currently alive and sampled trace back to the same mitochondrial "eve". Current research would suggest that the Saame came "recently" from Iberian peninsula, so they're pretty distant genetically from Southern Baltic Finns as well. There are genetic relatives, linguistic relatives, and generally cultural relatives. I meant mostly the latter with all the shamanic tradition.

Had the luxury of seeing this on the big screen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music years ago. Still one of my favorite films!

Thanks for uploading this clip. It's great to hear Englund's soundtrack finally. He used some of this material also in his Piano Concerto no. 1.

Hi, I want to try to find this movie some way, VHS or stg.. I remember this: I was
almost a kid or pre-teen then but Mirjami K. was hot and after all years this piece of
culture should be re-constructed or stg.

This is utterly incredible! Where can a mere mortal such as myself find the entire movie, preferably with English subtitles?

Tämä leffa pitäisi laittaa näille sivuille
kokonaan. Musiikki tässä on on noin puolet
koko elokuvan ansioista.
