  • the guy I roll with is former collegiate wrestler, wrestled in the army, nice guy but always passes my guard. this helps a lot when he tries to posture up.

  • This video was excellent. I started BJJ 3 months ago now and its great to get all the advice that I can get. Thank you.

  • BJJ is pretty cool ;D But I prefer Sambo :D

  • BJJ = Chess of the mind... Love it!

  • @mallywon Surely chess is the chess of the mind....

  • @jitteryjoe lol, yup

  • See this is why I love BJJ. Everywhere else on youtube people leave comments tearing into each other with all sorts of hate crap, yet here we give each other sparring tips!

  • tl;dr

  • great instructions!!!

  • VITOR!!!!!!

  • I wish you could arrange better audio. It would make it easier to understand what he's trying to explain :)

  • Never realized that Stephan is such a big guy.

  • FANTASTIC video as always too!

  • Stephan, I NEEEED your help!!! What can I do when I have my opponent in my guard, but he his crushing his shoulder into the side of my neck, while squeezing HARD with both his arms wrapped around my neck?

As soon as he gets the under hooks and gets a grip of my neck, its basically all over. The only thing I can do is use my legs to stretch him out a bit & ease the pressure....but then what?

He's tapped me out with this move too many times now!!!

    So embarrassing!

    PLEASE help!

  • @SkemeKOS i think what you're describing is the "can opener", your opponent basically is cranking your neck by pulling your head into his body. as far as i know, this is not a legit move in BJJ. a solution would be to use a "long fist" (tucking your fingertips against the bottom knuckle of each finger) and pushing into your opponents throat, making him give up the hold. although i don't really know whether this move is legit either, i do use it whenever someone tries "can opening" me.

  • @waldomarek

Nah, its not the can opener.

I can get out of that whenever he uses it.

I just use leverage on his elbows.

Luckily he sucks at that one LOL

But that "long fist" will surely come in handy so thanks.

  • @waldomarek

And yeah, I use only legit BJJ techniques Ive learned.

My friend likes to fight "dirty" though.

Which I have no problem with because I like a challenge.

  • @SkemeKOS I doubt he can choke you from there. All it really is is a pressure move to make you react. Comb your hair, trap a leg with one of your legs, get a butterfly hook in, and sweep him.

  • @AverageAsianMe

He choked me 3 times from there and my friend from there once too.

I tried that sweep but it doesnt work because he has his hips off the floor, driving his weight into my neck.

Maybe I just suck at the sweep....but the thing is, I can do that sweep perfectly when his hips are low.

    I will keep trying though.

    Thanks.

  • @SkemeKOS

    Actually, I made a mistake.

He doesnt get underhooks at all...he just kind of head locks me and crushes his shoulder into my neck with all his weight on it while squeezing hard with his arms.

His hips are high off the ground.

  • @SkemeKOS hips high off the ground means he's standing on his feet kinda, no? that should make for a perfect butterfly sweep there imo.

  • @waldomarek

Yeah, the last time we fought, I got my butterflies in and used them to disturb his balance and scare him a bit with the fear of a sweep.

The thing is, I dont know the butterfly sweep ye LOLt(Im a beginner).

So yeah, maybe thats the answer!

I will definitely be practicing the butterfly guard and sweeps from now on.

    Thanks, my friend.

    Very much appreciated.

  • @waldomarek

I wrote along comment to you but youtube wouldnt let me post it(error) but yeah, hes kind of standing on his feet.

I think the butterfly sweep will be the answer.

Thanks, my friend. Very much appreciated.

  • @SkemeKOS Yes I know. I had a 285 lbs man do this to me and I`m 220. Since I didn't get a chance to arm bar him I went ahead and did a sweep. You can also have you hand between your bodies and drive your knuckles into a pressure point on his chest. I`m not sure how he's actually choking your from here.

  • @AverageAsianMe

He just stays in my guard. He NEVER tries to posture up, ALWAYS goes for this damn move LOL

Hes literally NEVER even attempted a guard pass.

I can withhold from tapping for a while, but eventually my legs just gas out and im useless then.

Its obvious that my guard needs some serious work, but this move is the only one ive encountered that gives me any kind of trouble.

  • @SkemeKOS If you see it coming that arm bar is there. Work you sweep if you miss your chance for the arm bar. Don't stay flat on the mat.

  • @AverageAsianMe

    Yeah, I'll do that.

Thanks a lot for your help. I appreciate it, my friend.

I'll let you know when I finally stop getting tapped from there LOL

  • @SkemeKOS This is a familiar problem for me. I've had lots of larger guys use their weight on me directly in my closed guard. Lately, my response to this has been to transition to open guard. My feet go to their hips and my knees squeeze in tight. At that point you should be able to create the space you need by pushing on the hips and directing the head to the left and right with your hands. Once you start to see the space opening up, plan A is to attack immediately. Plan B is to stand up.

  • @kifn2

Thanks, man, that sounds like a great thing to try.

Cant wait to try it out now!

I truly appreciate all the help Ive been getting from you guys.

  • @kifn2

Thanks man, that one sounds GREAT!

    Very much appreciated.

I dont know why I keep getting damn errors nearly evertime I try commenting on this video.

  • @kifn2 Have you tried using the hook sweep? That works for me a lot when people put their weight forward in closed guard.

  • @SkemeKOS If his hips are off the ground and hes pushing on your neck, just try sliding back on ur butt so your sitting upright, then adjust so he cant do it again or work for better position

  • @drumerboy1123

Thanks man, I will do that too.
