@horowizard I'm sure the sound has nothing to do with the mic on the camera. I'm sure that was made in a foreign country as well let's not forget blame them too. @Ed, thanks for another great review.
Please try one of them Ibanez Promethean with any setup it´s available. I checked the 2x10'' - Combo as well, but I decidet to buy the 1x10'' - because of it´s weight. With the built in 10'' - speaker You will have 250 watt - enough for every little gig or practising! On smaler gigs I use it with a 2x10'' Peavey 210TVX EX - nice! Real awesome, what power comes out of that little 500 Watt-amp with this cabinet! My guitarist felt his trousers like flattering.. Now I sit here, watch you and play.
@RLHubner - Well, you can get a more hifi tone with the filters, it will never sound like GK though. GK is GK, Genz is Genz. Will it cover your needs? I have no way of knowing that, but i use this amp 90% of the time. If I need to get loud, I add the extension cab.
If you can, could you tell me how this amp would compare to a GK MB combo, or a MarkBass LMII? I'm looking to go for a smaller amp for practice and smaller venues. Could you maybe post a Class D/Neo/Small Combo comparison video?
@mikeymacaque - The GK MB 112, which is the closest in size to the Genz is only 200 watts, the Genz is 375 or 600 (with extension cab). That's a big difference for gigging. GK has it's own tone, a signature sound, if you like it - that's a good thing. Genz is more neutral, it imparts less coloration on your tone. The LMII has some cool features, and many people like them too. It's got more power than the GK. They are tuned for lower freq. response than the Genz, but I think the Genz is tighter.
@BassGuitarMag "Genz is more neutral, it imparts less coloration on your tone." This is exactly what I am looking for. What other brands would you recommend in the "less coloration" category?
@mikeymacaque - I've used the Shuttle 6.0/12t for 90% of my gigs for the last 2 1/2 years, and I've never been disappointed. I obviously have a personal preference for them, but that is not to say the others are bad, I just don't use them.
Was going to get a fender tv but after seeing you pick this up and checking out all the features I'm seriously thinking about investing in this. How does it hold up with practicing with loud drummer? Thanks for the great/informative vids Ed!
uno question: do you think getting a 6.0 instead of the 3.0 just for the tube preamp is a good solution? I don't need much power or the footswitch but I would really like to have a tube pre in my rig... do you think it's worth it?
alrighty i have a gallien krueger 8x10 cabinet . this may sound really dumb but would this head work with it? lol my 8x10 is rated 800w at 4ohms, but it just seems really weird for my cab to weigh 180 pounds then the genz benz weigh 4 pounds.
@emerican10 - Yes, it will put 600 watts into your 810. I know it seems strange to have such a light amp on a heavy cab, but it's still 30 or more lbs. you don't have to carry.
@Musicman20UK - I have not heard anything regarding updates, GB does not talk about what they have in development - they tend to wait until the product is ready to ship to make announcements. But I'll say this - I am still playing out of this exact amp you see in this video. I've had it since January 08, I've played the hell out of it, and it still sounds great and works reliably. Don't wait, get one of these.
@idigcars - It might, depends on how thick the rug is, but the idea is good. Check out the GRAMMA by Auralex, it's a foam pad that costs about $60, but it's worth every penny. It isolates the cab from the floor and greatly reduces the low frequencies from "coupling" with the room. Tighter bottom, better clarity - I never, and I mean - never play a gig without it.
Hi Ed, question about the Gramma Pad. Have you found that it makes a significant difference on all surfaces, or is it more geared towards a cab being on a wooden floor or stage where things have the potential to get really boomy? I'm wondering how much of a difference it would make when a cab is on a concrete floor?
@MajorImpact - Yes, it also helps on concrete. Low frequencies can couple with any floor, not in the same way - but the Gramma still helps. I won't play without it. I've had mine for ... 7 years maybe? Ever since they first came out, and I've never, and I mean NEVER played a gig with my own gear without it.
Thanks Ed, I intend to try it, I was just givin' ya a hard time. One final Q: I don't know how many different cabs you've put on it over the years, but have you found that the ones with rubber feet have put permanent indentations into the pad, or even worn holes into it? Or is it advised to remove them from the cab so just the cab itself rests on the pad?
Thanks, really enjoy your reviews (although I'm a bit apprehensive to see you slappin' on the Steve Harris P-bass!)
Hey Ed....Im from the UK....I nearly went for a Shuttlemax 12, but I have just read here that Genz have something new coming out?! Is this true? Should I wait?
I'm undecided between the shuttle 6 and the GBE 750. I love the portability and "cuteness" of the shuttle, but I'm not actually too fussed about portability. I'm attracted to the extra features of the GBE750. What's your recommendation? I'm going to mate it to a GK neo 212 cab
well i bought the 3.0/10 and i just wanted to say i was shocked and amazed by this little amp i couldnt help but laugh after i played the first note because it was so impossibly loud!!! and the tone was jaw dropping if anyone is thinking about buying a shuttle combo all i have to say is do yourself a favor a got ahead and buy it... ohhh yeah these things are silly light too
Mr. Friedland i am considering purchasing a genz benz shuttle combo but because of my budget i am interested in the shuttle 3.0-10T i was just wondering if you were familiar with this combo and if so how does it stack up against its big brother?
The 3.0/10 is a great little amp. It obviously has less power and speaker coverage than the bigger one, but it is surprisingly loud and full. It can handle a low B quite well, but of course you can't get stupid with it. With the matching 10t extension cab, it can handle moderate gig level with drums and guitars, just don't try to play Metal with it.
What would you reccomend as a good amp for metal and hard rock but with the versaitilaty to play funk and slap? any help would be great as i'm currently running my fender jazz and musicman stingray through an asdown electric blue 180
Well, I think you need something bigger than that for metal and hard rock, at least 600 watts. Look at the Genz Benz GBE 750 and Uber Bass 212 cab. Ashdown makes nice stuff too.
You've sold me on it as well. Will probably get one instead of a Jazz V. What about the rosewood fretboard vs the maple? Did you get the std pickup setup for that bass?
Well, the Warwick fretless 4 I purchased back in January was the first non-Fender instrument I purchased in over 20 years. My first bass back in the early-80's was a Hondo II P bass copy. I primarily played guitar in the 80's and my guitars were mostly strats of various stripes with the exception of a 1959 Gretsch Tennessean (not sure if I spelled that right), which I traded a Firebird reverse for. There was also a Washburn Shadow solidbody classical style guitar.
Dude!! You're a night owl too!? I took a look at your website, and saw that you're a fellow Texan. Austin's a cool town-- I have relatives there. I'm from the Houston/Galveston area myself-- currently living on my sailboat- hence the purchase of the Genz-Benz 6.0 12T. May give you a shout sometime via email on what led me to play bass and the songs that inspired me as well. I will warn you that I'm a Warwick fan waiting for a special-ordered Corvette fretless fiver, though.
What about that 'burst Jazz V standing to the left of the Bergantino stack? I have a Jazz 4 string I really like and have considered a V. Also, I'm not a Precision guy but that MIM sure sounds sweet!
Thanks for the great review Ed! It was on the strength of this review along with a recommendation from one of my Warwick Forum bros, that I bought one of these sight unseen from Music 123 (none of my local music stores carried them).
ive always wanted to know, what is the purpose of an effects loop? ive always connected my bass directly into the input with a cable coming from the processor out.
It prevents degradation or loss of signal due to a failure or bad connection in your effects chain. It can also allow for adjusting the overall level of effects in your sound.
hey ed, how do you rate the markbass amps in comparison, are they both the same qaulity mark or is the Genz more sophisticated, cheers love the vids (Y)....
I've never had the chance to spend a lot of time with the MB stuff. I played through one once and liked some of the features, but I couldn't give you a real evaluation of the quality. I have however been playing on the Genz Shuttle rig consistently for well over a year now and have never had any problems, it always sounds great, and is always a joy on the load out.
I find that 12s are a great medium between the quick response of a 10 and the beef of a 15. I started with 15s, then went to 10's.... now it seems all my cabs are 12s.
I'm still new to the pairing of heads and cabinets. How well would this head power an Ampeg B410 HLF, and what other cabinets would you reccomend for this head to get the most out of it.
No, in fact they built an extra 6dB of headroom into the clip light. When it goes off, you still have plenty of room, it's sort of a soft limiting function. This amp rounds off the edge more like a tube amp, not like many digital amps.
Well, I did test out the Phil Jones amps with my upright. You can see the videos on the Bassguitarmag channel. However, I will say that the Shuttle sounds exceptional with upright, it's my main rig for all my gigs.
I don't know if they are available commercialy in the US. They are pretty small companies but they are really really good. The Vanderkley poweramp unit puts out 2800 watts at 4 ohms bridged. That convinced me to make it my next amp.
Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking of getting a Genz Benz but wanted some more info. By the way, if you get a chance could you please check out Hevos or Vanderkley amps? Us Dutch bassplayers are mad about them.
Not sure what a Db dropoff is... but it handles the low B just fine. It is designed with a low frequency rolloff which gives you better power efficiency and more clarity in the low range. It is not a sub-bass rig - it's a well-focused, portable gig amp.
This amp does not likely compare to a 8x10 Ampeg cabinet, but it makes me laugh that people on various websites point this fact out. A 1x12 speaker is not going to cover an Ampeg stack's spectrum, but portability is a key for people that buy this.
yEs.. I have since gotten a Shuttle 12.. and agree.. I wish the GB had a BIT more power.. with passive basses, it seems I have to turn up to 7 or 8 even.. but that is merely an output problem of the bass.
totally agree with that one. Too many volume hogs out there...the whole band needs to learn to play dynamically. Funny thing is...GB has a Shuttle 12.0 in the works...yeah...1200 watts at 7.5 lbs. Crazy.
more power means more headroom, which means the possibilities of dynamics and sounds are expanded. that's always a good thing.
the trouble is that people use the higher output amps strictly for more volume.
i read an interesting article on the mixing of CD audio recently. basically most CDs made after 1990ish in the US, the volume is pushed passed the limit and then snipped so the whole mix is ruined in terms of dynamics. and it makes a difference in the overall sound.
i'm not entirely sure what the correct term would be for what happens to CD audio... limited seems to fit pretty accurately, but i'm not as boned up on my audiophile terms as i once was... a drastic reduction in funds will do that! haha :)
i'll try to find the article and PM it or reply to your comment and get it to you if you like.
also, try a search for 'coat hanger audio cable blind test' or similar terms. luckily, i make my own instrument/audio cables nine times out of ten.
Justin Chancellor uses two ~1,000 watt solid state amps that each go into a cab that has two 12" speakers and a tweeter...it's not a tube amp by anymeans....a tone amp yes, but most his sound comes from the EQing that his Wal pickups do, and the amp just does a really good job at keeping that low end while still having very nice high mids.
Hey Ed! Thanks for another great review. Do you have any MusicMan around that you can play into this if you still have it? How does it sound? Is there hope of a video of it? Either a Ray or that neat Bongo 6 would rock.
I don't have any MM basses around now, but sometime in the future I should be getting a review Sterling 5. I'll try to use the Shuttle with that review when it happens. Hey, don't wait, just buy this amp! It has become an indispensible tool for me, I don't want to gig without it.
Nice amp but I'm old fashioned. I prefer the deep full sound that I get from a 15" speaker. I actually prefer the sound of my less expensive Ampeg BA115 better but it's a personal thing. I also don't want anything with tubes because of reliability issues and I don't like distortion even from tubes.
I have the Neo Pak 3.5 All the same tone design as the shuttle and I love it. I use it on most gigs Even used it thorugh an Ampeg 8X10 one evening. Typically I use the Neo Pak with a Neo 2X12 cab . Love it. Only regreat is that the shuttle come out shortly after.
one of the best amps on the market right now. markbass watch out! I just hope to someday afford snappy new strings all the time like ed does ;-). Too bad Genz Stuff is so expensive right now.
very impressive amp. it's amazing what technology keeps doing to bass related gear. i would've called you superman if i saw you curling a 12" cab with a 600 watt head with one arm 10 years ago...good review as always kind sir.
wow that's a tube amp yes? I gig with the fender bassman 250 2-10 cab with 15 cab extension which sounds nice but gezz that thing would be a big improvement over what I have now huh?
It sells for around $1,200, and it is well worth the dough! This is not some cheap piece of junk that's going to break down after three gigs. I use mine on virtually every gig, and it totally rocks, I get any tone I want from it. They now have the 12" extension cab too.
Ed,you're the man!

@BassGuitarMag Would I be able to get this amp to sound more Hi Fi like the GKs?
Also, I have a 500 watts 212GK combo and it has enough power for me but, I wonder if a 112 combo would suffice my needs.
I was taking a look at the Markbass amps but I can't get through my head that only one speaker can fill an average room with bass.
Thanks for all the help man, you should be nominated as one of the most resourceful bassists on youtube.

extantia 2 years ago
That is a Lakland Joe Osborn V. The White Precision is an '88 MIJ.
BassGuitarMag 2 years ago
I stand corrected-- whenever I see an MI, my brain automatically says MIM because they're so ubiquitous these days.
Speaking of the Lakland Joe Osborne V, have you reviewed it yet? How does it compare to it's Fender counterpart (feel, sound, case candy...)
extantia 2 years ago
The Joe is a different animal. Apples and oranges. They are both nice.
BassGuitarMag 2 years ago
That Joe Osborn V is a monster-- what type of pickups does it have?
extantia 2 years ago
Thanks for the great review Ed! It was on the strength of this review along with a recommendation from one of my Warwick Forum bros, that I bought one of these sight unseen from Music 123 (none of my local music stores carried them).

ive always wanted to know, what is the purpose of an effects loop? ive always connected my bass directly into the input with a cable coming from the processor out.
3072645 2 years ago
It prevents degradation or loss of signal due to a failure or bad connection in your effects chain. It can also allow for adjusting the overall level of effects in your sound.

I mean check my vids for a quick demo on it.
j3rdog 2 years ago
hey ed, how do you rate the markbass amps in comparison, are they both the same qaulity mark or is the Genz more sophisticated, cheers love the vids (Y)....
teehee45 2 years ago
I've never had the chance to spend a lot of time with the MB stuff. I played through one once and liked some of the features, but I couldn't give you a real evaluation of the quality. I have however been playing on the Genz Shuttle rig consistently for well over a year now and have never had any problems, it always sounds great, and is always a joy on the load out.
BassGuitarMag 2 years ago
any reason why you always use twelves? Your demos are really good
nicoptw 2 years ago
I find that 12s are a great medium between the quick response of a 10 and the beef of a 15. I started with 15s, then went to 10's.... now it seems all my cabs are 12s.
BassGuitarMag 2 years ago
i just got two 1x12" cabs, and you're right! thank you!

voilaaaaa ! ^^
ExiledGeist 2 years ago
I think it would do just fine. I use it to power my 212 cab and it's huge. You get 375 at 8 ohms, and 600 at 4ohms.
BassGuitarMag 2 years ago
I'm still new to the pairing of heads and cabinets. How well would this head power an Ampeg B410 HLF, and what other cabinets would you reccomend for this head to get the most out of it.

Any idea what make of tube they use in the pre-amp?
vikingraider1 3 years ago
I think it is a Ruby tubes 12AX7.
bassist13 3 years ago
noticed the clip light was going off quite often in the video, is that not as big a deal with a tube preamp like that?
Nice playing, and Neodymium threw me for a curve as well the first time i saw it ! lol
AndreTheGigante 3 years ago
No, in fact they built an extra 6dB of headroom into the clip light. When it goes off, you still have plenty of room, it's sort of a soft limiting function. This amp rounds off the edge more like a tube amp, not like many digital amps.
BassGuitarMag 3 years ago
LMAO... "Neo-dym-nnnn... Neo-Dyn... Nnnnn..." That totally made my day, Instant classic!
Don't worry Ed, your still that dude! better luck with the pronunciation next time... XD
Great review guys, keep up the great work!
P.S. when u guys gonna break out the upright to see if it plays nice with all this great equipment? don't forget about us...
bassface84 3 years ago
Well, I did test out the Phil Jones amps with my upright. You can see the videos on the Bassguitarmag channel. However, I will say that the Shuttle sounds exceptional with upright, it's my main rig for all my gigs.
BassGuitarMag 3 years ago
I don't know if they are available commercialy in the US. They are pretty small companies but they are really really good. The Vanderkley poweramp unit puts out 2800 watts at 4 ohms bridged. That convinced me to make it my next amp.
Verminite 3 years ago
Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking of getting a Genz Benz but wanted some more info. By the way, if you get a chance could you please check out Hevos or Vanderkley amps? Us Dutch bassplayers are mad about them.
Verminite 3 years ago
This is the first I've heard of those amps, I've never seen them in the US. If I get a chance, I will check them out.
BassGuitarMag 3 years ago
Very practical combo. Just about thought of everything...size, sound, versatility, and portability.
spatemdim 3 years ago
How does the little 12" handle the low B? What's the Db drop off?
Verminite 3 years ago
Not sure what a Db dropoff is... but it handles the low B just fine. It is designed with a low frequency rolloff which gives you better power efficiency and more clarity in the low range. It is not a sub-bass rig - it's a well-focused, portable gig amp.

Need to get me that Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0/12t!
Did try it out just the other day.. and WOW!!
Hogweedmusic 3 years ago
This amp does not likely compare to a 8x10 Ampeg cabinet, but it makes me laugh that people on various websites point this fact out. A 1x12 speaker is not going to cover an Ampeg stack's spectrum, but portability is a key for people that buy this.
blah114a 3 years ago
8x10 cabs are so rarely actually NEEDED. either have the band turn it down a bit or run to the PA via mic or DI and stop compensating- says i.
i play through a pjb flightcase most of the time, though. never needed a whole lot more.
but if it can't be done with a 4x10 or equivalent, something's wrong.
intrepgun 3 years ago
yEs.. I have since gotten a Shuttle 12.. and agree.. I wish the GB had a BIT more power.. with passive basses, it seems I have to turn up to 7 or 8 even.. but that is merely an output problem of the bass.
blah114a 3 years ago
totally agree with that one. Too many volume hogs out there...the whole band needs to learn to play dynamically. Funny thing is...GB has a Shuttle 12.0 in the works...yeah...1200 watts at 7.5 lbs. Crazy.
wnseries7 3 years ago
more power means more headroom, which means the possibilities of dynamics and sounds are expanded. that's always a good thing.
the trouble is that people use the higher output amps strictly for more volume.
i read an interesting article on the mixing of CD audio recently. basically most CDs made after 1990ish in the US, the volume is pushed passed the limit and then snipped so the whole mix is ruined in terms of dynamics. and it makes a difference in the overall sound.
intrepgun 3 years ago
so basically the overall CD mix was compressed? Or should I say limited?
wnseries7 3 years ago
i'm not entirely sure what the correct term would be for what happens to CD audio... limited seems to fit pretty accurately, but i'm not as boned up on my audiophile terms as i once was... a drastic reduction in funds will do that! haha :)
i'll try to find the article and PM it or reply to your comment and get it to you if you like.
also, try a search for 'coat hanger audio cable blind test' or similar terms. luckily, i make my own instrument/audio cables nine times out of ten.
intrepgun 3 years ago
I believe it runs around $1100 US. It's only 375 watts @ 8 ohms, add a second 12 inch cab and it'll give you the full 600 watts at 4 ohms.

Around how much would this cost?
cdavidg9 3 years ago
Man that amp sounded great when you were using the pic. Geez, you could get a great 'Tool' kind of tone out of this amp!!
klpinvestments 3 years ago
It does get a nice tube driven tone, I don't use it much myself, but I do work the tube gain for coloration sometimes.
This amp rocks, I use it on every gig now.
BassGuitarMag 3 years ago
Justin Chancellor uses two ~1,000 watt solid state amps that each go into a cab that has two 12" speakers and a tweeter...it's not a tube amp by anymeans....a tone amp yes, but most his sound comes from the EQing that his Wal pickups do, and the amp just does a really good job at keeping that low end while still having very nice high mids.
Spaghettaboutit 3 years ago
My bad, I'm pretty sure he has one cab in the said 12" speakers and he also has a Six 10" cab.

Hey Ed! Thanks for another great review. Do you have any MusicMan around that you can play into this if you still have it? How does it sound? Is there hope of a video of it? Either a Ray or that neat Bongo 6 would rock.
RocketRalf 3 years ago
I don't have any MM basses around now, but sometime in the future I should be getting a review Sterling 5. I'll try to use the Shuttle with that review when it happens. Hey, don't wait, just buy this amp! It has become an indispensible tool for me, I don't want to gig without it.

boonokian 3 years ago
Nice amp but I'm old fashioned. I prefer the deep full sound that I get from a 15" speaker. I actually prefer the sound of my less expensive Ampeg BA115 better but it's a personal thing. I also don't want anything with tubes because of reliability issues and I don't like distortion even from tubes.
tbcass 3 years ago
I have the Neo Pak 3.5 All the same tone design as the shuttle and I love it. I use it on most gigs Even used it thorugh an Ampeg 8X10 one evening. Typically I use the Neo Pak with a Neo 2X12 cab . Love it. Only regreat is that the shuttle come out shortly after.
andbassforall 3 years ago
one of the best amps on the market right now. markbass watch out!

That looks like a great bit of kit. The fact it's light as hell in impressive as well! It's given me some ideas....

wow that's a tube amp yes? I gig with the fender bassman 250 2-10 cab with 15 cab extension which sounds nice but gezz that thing would be a big improvement over what I have now huh?
j3rdog 3 years ago
It has a tube driven preamp, the power amp is Class D - digital amp. That's why it's so light.
BassGuitarMag 3 years ago
Man that's a great sounding little rig. I have to say I'm impressed! :-) a 5/5 for sure! Thank you for posting.
scarymonster2010 3 years ago
How much cash does that go for?
victorgtz 3 years ago
It sells for around $1,200, and it is well worth the dough! This is not some cheap piece of junk that's going to break down after three gigs. I use mine on virtually every gig, and it totally rocks, I get any tone I want from it. They now have the 12" extension cab too.

Yass! Really wanting of these but hadnt seen any really good reviews.
