Porter's conceptual and analytical frameworks had stood up well to fierce scrutiny in the past. However the rise of hypercompetition, the resourced based view and blue ocean strategy have exposed severe limitations to his models making them obsolete if not worthless.

You exaggerate too much!

Certainly, scholars debate many of Porter's assertions. For example, the resource based view certainly challenges many of Porter's IO assumptions and beliefs. In addition, Porter's belief that a firm cannot be both low cost and differentiated certainly has its detractors. And there are others.

That said, IO and Porter still offer an important lens valuable to strategy scholars and practitioners everywhere.
