Sorry for the audio quality. I was using poor recording software at the time which mixed my audio track with the game's. Plus, I was using the microphone of an old camcorder, so moving around may have changed my voice quality. Lastly, I was messing around with a special sound effect in Adobe Audition, which screwed up the quality of this recording. I've since gotten new equipment and recording software, so please excuse the poor acoustics of the sound on this video.
Frame advance may take a long time but it is much better than making a video look sloppy. Plus without frame advance you couldn't do things like wall or flag clipping.
Definitely. If this were a true speedrun, I would've used frame advance through the whole thing. Since this is for youtube, I had to speed things up for demonstration purposes.
@R2Bl3nd I think someone could tas SMB 1-1 in under 15 minutes properly including best start, a decent run in the underground segment, and the flagpole glitch even though you may need to go through a little lua/memory addressing tutorial before hand. But if you include "what people think of tasing" it will be cutting it close.
What is your input setup, do you use a joypad and keyboard combo? I find that when I am doing a TAS that saving a state means I have to move my hands from the joypad to the keyboard resulting in slowing down my character.
I just use the keyboard. Analog direction buttons are mapped to arrow keys, A and B are mapped to Z and X, save is control, shift is load, + is speed up, - is speed down, space is fast forward, \ is frame-by-frame, P is pause/unpause. I tried a joypad, but that just complicated things.
That's why emulators have *multiple* save slots. You switch slots every now and then so that if you *do* save in the wrong place, you can fall back on an earlier one.
so basically, a TAS isn't a "speedrun" at all

how do you stop recording a movie and start at the same spot later, or do you just have to make a whole TAS in one, single go? (on VBA emulator)

@PearIsAStar
You have to make saves, and load at where you made the saves.
R2Bl3nd 2 years ago
Well, not like that, like say I accidentally save a bad point.
