If you had seen Cecelia Bartolli singing with Bryn Terfel at the "98" Richard Tucker Gala, posted earlier, and it seems, withdrawn, you would understand the reactions of the viewers about Thomas Hamson's "wooden stance", in this concert versus her vivacity. She sparkles and emotes, even in a non- operatic setting.....she sings from the heart - Glorious.
They sing it beautifully, but they could learn a lot about how to interact with each other from Anna Netrebko and Bo Skovhus. Very enjoyable performance.
This is the "coldest" La ci darem... that I have ever heard. Why didnt Hampson let Bartoli walk out first? You always let the woman walk out first. Why doesnt he embrace her at times? They must not like one another.
@elizakolo He is not ignoring her, he is just giving her lesson of singing technique and showing her that a REAL singer is supposed to sing with the VOiCE and NOT with his body, gesture and grimaces to camouflage the lack of the voice. I think he did it specially. This is a testimony that Bartoli is not able to sing using her vocal facilities, she cannot produce a note without making grimaces, body movements and aspiration a la "telephone sex" that have nothing to do with the music!
P.S. I just remembered, originally Renée Fleming was to perform with Thomas Hampson, and because she fell ill, Cecilia Bartoli was flown in as a last-minute replacement.

Bravo Hampson! This is the way to stop the singers showing off on stage instead of singing! If you leave Bartoli without the opportunity to move, only with "singing" - everybody will hear that she is not able to sing "legato" 2 notes. The great lesson for everyone!
Beautiful... Simply beautiful. Voices from Heaven, no doubt about it.

La Bartoli è Odiosa.
Canta in modo terribilmente artificiale.
La figura di Zerlina è rivestita da un'ingeniutà quasi infantile che Cecilia violenta in modo insopportabile.

@kneelandpray1 Your point being? The part was written for a baritone/bass after all :/

I wonder what happened here? Hampson isn't always this wooden.

Evidentemente in sala c'era una temperatura polare, si sono resi necessari più di due minuti di applausi perchè il pubblico si scaldasse le mani.

Cecilia, who is a first grade singer, does her usual funny faces when she sings...sometimes they are not just funny, but scary...

Totally un-emotional! Shame on you, Thomas Hampson for ignoring such an attractive Zerlina.

Agree, the only thing he seems interested in seducing is the camera. :)

@Desideria7 @ Cecilia Bartoli lacks VOICE?
Really?
On the planet I am from she is considered to be among the best of its kind...

@elizakolo I don't think he likes women and I have heard she doesn't really like men so... I guess it's just the singing :)

I find Thomas Hampson very stiff and boring and vocally not even impressive....... is this oratorio, a Requiem? or commedia dell'arte?

Bartoli at some points gets a bit too quiet for my tastes, but all around an excellent rendition of this beautiful duet.

Beautiful emotional singing of this divine aria. Thank you for posting, ClassicalRelated!

Thank you Tom,
I don't get many reactions from Denmark, but I agree with you. This is one of the most beautiful versions of this aria I myself have ever heard.

Well, Gerrit, there aren't that many Danes all together :-)
The aria is really sooo well performed with such genuine emotion that I had to shed a tear.
The aria itself is of course one of Mozarts masterpieces - so powerful in its divine simplicity.
One is tempted to say thanks God Renée Fleming took sick .... Bartoli's performance is fantastic!

Hampson se apartó psicológicamente del rol, sin embargo, interpreta vocalmente a un excelente don giovanni. Magnifico Riccardo Muti.

Very good. Thomas is known as... well, let's call it difficult when it comes to politeness, empathy and good manners in general.
Yet, if you don't watch and just listen, it's beautiful. :-)

I completely disagree. Hampson's phrasing is way better than Terfel's. Plus he's better looking. ;-)

They both look terribly awkward. Specially when singing but it's a brilliant performance so it's ok.
Cecilia looks so innocent (in the Andiam part) I wanna grab her and keep her in my pocket .
