Actually Mick Foley couldn't understand the ref, because he only spoke french. So, the ref handed it to a man outside the ring, who ran it back to Ric Flair, who told the man to put it in a bag of ice and leave it in Mick Foley's room.

Later at the hospital Mick Foley tried to get the german nurse to allow him to keep his ear, but she threw it away.

You can see the ref bending down and picking something off the floor ( 8:16 ). It's the ear. If you look real close you can see the ear fly off when he punches vader.

Since the reply was a garbled mess, here's what really happened:

The ropes at WCW were elevator cables. The match prior a wrestler complained they were too loose, so the roadies tightened them to be the max tension.

Foley was due to do a hangman, and normally he'd slip out by moving the ropes, but they were too tight. He had mishaps with this sorta thing before (tears behind the ear) but this time he thought he was dead.

In the end he lost his ear, and had to have plastic surgery.

He was choking, so he had to force his head out from between them. His ear is still barely attached until 8:16 in the video. Then you can see it fly off, get picked up by the ref, and handed to a guy on the outside while Foley continues to wrestle. I dare someone to debate my explanation.
