  • fantastic puncher .Roldan...

  • Comment removed

  • Hearns has no legs, when pressured, his legs always left him. Funny, as an amateur, Hearns used his legs as his most useful asset. BUT DAMN, he could punch.

Entonces no hubo trampas, "querido"!!!

  • Notice crooked "referee" Mills Lane giving Hearns extra time to recover when he's hurt at 2:00 onward.

  • Que negro de mierda tramposo como ahorca!!!

  • SOCRA7TES !!!!: Yo solo expresè un sentimiento, no insultè a nadie...a este punto sì puedo decir sin temor a equivocarme que vos sos un maleducado. Saludos

  • Roldan unfortunately never had a good trainer teach him the tricks or finesse of boxing. He thought he could steamroll everyone but his strength. Not at this level. That left hook in rd 4 was a thing of beauty. I was surprised that Tommy could recover. This fight was a war.

  • Dream fight: Hearns Vs Julian Jackson.

Both men could be wobbled easily but were still lethal with one punch, as long as they were still standing.

    Who would win?

  • @BruceinFalkirk jackson, i think he had a better jaw and was a stronger fighter at middleweight. hearn or trinadad woh do you think?

  • @cv003799 - Jackson, despite his record admits to being a natural 154lb fighter but he must be given a puncher's chance against the hitman.

Trinidad often made a slow start in his fights. Against Tommy Hearns, that is going to be fatal.

  • hearns friggin sucked, fot like pussyall his career runnin backwards from smaller, weaker hitters(tho not roldan)and grabbin constantly, jerk

  • @finetubs ur a dumb coward jew

  • @Archafka

    And you're a racist moron.

  • The problem was that Roldan was that he didnt quite have a world class chin..but boy could he punch! and he was aggressive.

  • they were going for broke with every punch; you have to love it. Roldan was dangerous but Hearns was better. I would have loved to see Tony the baby bull Ayala vs Roldan, or vs Hearns. Ayala vs SRL , SRL beats the snot out of him because SRL was way too great a boxer to let Ayala get going. Hearns & Roldan would have slugged it out. Big mistake to make with Ayala in his prime.

  • Hearns' chin was his weakness, but it was more due to poor balance than anything else. Angelo Dundee has said that if Hearns had better balance, he may have proven to be greater than the other three of the "Four Kings." As far as Hearns being rated higher than Leonard, no chance. Hearns, while a great fighter, came up short in his two biggest fights. When he and Leonard were at their peak, Leonard found a way to win.

  • He had the same weakness Joe Louis had...he dropped his left to engage fighters, leaving him open to strong looping lefts. Max Schemling exploited that on Louis in their fight...and Iran Barkley did it twice on Hearns.

  • @BumDog007 Excuse me looping RIGHTS.

  • Not better than SRL. Only because I don't think he trained as hard as SRL . Hearns had the punchers advantage, and he relied on it,maybe too much. As a boxer he had the skills plus a wicked hard thrower./ His chin wasn't near as tuff as SRL. SRL would've put Roldan away and never get hurt, but if Roldan clubbed him he wouldn't have shown it SRL could take a punch

  • I know people will scoff at this, but I thiink Hearns should be considered greater than Leonard. Yes he did lose the first time, but was leading on all cards. It is considered by many that the second time Hearns deserved the win, not the draw that was given. Leonard said he would not give Hearns a rematch after their first encounter because he was upset by some comments from the Hearns camp and I think Don King.

  • I don't think Hearns had as bad a chin as everyone makes out; most of the punches that wobbled or dropped him would have dropped most other boxers- if he had stayed at 154 no one would have touched him for yrs- once he went up in weight it was hard to go back down to 154

  • I counted 15 missed punches to the head by Roldan after he hurt Hearns with that left. Great job by Tommy to avoid those punches, collect himself and take Roldan apart.

  • First time ive seen Roldan, He looks strong ,Well done to Thomas for putting him away ,when he looked in trouble himself!

  • Tommy is a top ten puncher. He was putting dudes in the twilight zone! I don't know why so many people only talk about tommy's right hand. He has a top 15 or 20 jab and his left hook to the body and head was viscious! And people say tommy had a weak chin... he got stopped what, 3 times in his illustrious career and two of the 3 men who stopped him are hall of famers and the other(being Iran Barkley)won titles at 3 different weight classes and was a solid contender at the time he stopped hearns

  • Shalom. Brothers & Sisters. The Moral of this fight and message for us was/is always believe in yourself and never give up. Prasie Yah!

  • his stamina was good if he had a chin. one of the greatest offensive fighters of all time

  • WOW ...

    Just WOW!

  • If Hearns had stronger legs/stamina, he would have never lost.

  • "And it wasn't his chin that was a problem, it was his legs."

the chin and the legs are joined by the same nervous system. Most of the time I agree hearns legs seemed to fail him but in the hagler fight and the 1st barkley fight he was knocked the fuck out.

  • Yep, I agree completely (re: Hagler and Barkley fights).

  • Hearns has got to be on any list of Top 10 punchers. He was such a fightful hitter. His straight right was like a dart whose tip was packed with pure dynamite; and his left hook--both to the chin and liver--was good too. And it wasn't his chin that was a problem, it was his legs. They'd go wobbly when he'd get popped but often his head was clear, just like in this fight. But he was a feared fighter, and yes, a great one.

  • what a fight!! Hearns,Hagler,Roldan,Duran,Leonard all those guys of the 1980's came to fight. Roldan is the only guy to knock down Hagler.

  • I,although not really a Hearns fan,DEFINATELY have him down as a top ten all time great @ welter. Bear in mind all that are knocking Hearns chin.Roldan could punch!Just watch his fight with James Kinchen. If ever there was a one sided, nine round beatdown. That fight was it.Also, I don't think ROldan was a deliberate dirty fighter as far as rabbit punches go. Just his styple. Full bore, straight ahead!

  • @ianandori

BTW, the one fight of Tommy's (I am a fan) that I have never seen is his tough bout with James Kinchen. Wish someone could find & upload it.

  • tommy hearns is one of the all time greats...such an explosive fighter.

  • you got to hand it to juan roldan he tried like a warrior but in so doing so he got exhausted. it wasn't a fair match because hearns had the reach advantage. hearns lost 2 straight times to a guy who was just as tall as he was. hearns liked picking on smaller guys

  • @jeryd2003 Hearns picked on smaller guys! You sound like a Pactard! Duran, Haye, Martinez & Tyson all fought bigger guys without complaining. In this fight they were the same weight which meant Hearns was weaker & skinnier with a reach advantage. Its clear that Roldan was the bigger stronger fighter. Hearn's big right hand was the difference.

  • Roldan throws so many rabbit punches it's a shame.

  • Here's to everyone that says Hearns had a weak chin-take a look at this fight. He took some hard shots by Roldan and yet came out on top.

  • he had a good chin....not hagler´s or briscoe´s but he had a good chin i agree with u, he took duran´s punches like if they were nothing....

  • Hearns never ever had a weak chin - he just didn't know how to box defensively. They are 2 diffferent things entirely.

  • I've put posts about Hearns' chin and the bad rap he took. But he had an excellent chin.Tak e a look a 5:22. At the time Roldan was KOing everyone. Hearns COULD really take a shot.

The weak chin thing I think started with first Leonard fight. In the middle rounds of that fight he was staggered by what appeared to be a not too hard of a punch. I must admit I too bough into this back then. Now I know, that isn't the case.

Great boxer AND sportsman. After, he had nothing but praise for Roldan.

  • Hearns never knew how to be in a boring fight. What a credit to the sport.

  • yes indeed...i agree...there is no such thing as a boring hearns fight

  • Roldan had a quarell with his wife just before the bout, and that is why he entered the ring in a rage, and burned himself out from the beginning. He is in a kinda "joe frazier mode".

  • @germanpenn I disagree! Roldan couldn't outbox Hearns so the only way was to go after him the way Hagler did! He came up short though, largely due to the lessons Hearns learnt from the Hagler fight!

  • Well I always heard Hearns had a weak chin, well I do not think so. A guy with a weak chin would not have taken those punches well. Hearns took them. Maybe he just is so committed to punching that in other fights he was hit when he was not expecting it, because that Roldan guy can bomb and Hearns stood up to the punches and kept coming back. Hearns is a great fighter.. Tough guy.

  • ahhhh, martillo, you just needed to calm down after hitman was shaking his head because of your right to his chin. It was a matter of control.

  • good boxer, but he is behind 2 monsters as Hagler and leonard..

  • hearns was the best of his generation i loved watchin him make history wat a champ a true warrior in the same mold as holyfield,,,THE REAL DEAL

  • amen brother, they gave sugar ray thier 2nd fight, i like holyfield a lot more though.

  • hagler and leonard had one thing hearns didn't, a bloody good chin

  • itshows tha hearns is a better fighter

  • Hearns, Leonard, Hagler, Duran, Alexis Arguello, Aaron Pryor, Ray Mancini, not to mention Ali, Norton, Frazier, Foreman, etc. So many incredible fighters and so many amazing fights back then. All their fights were awesome. Boxing hasn't been like that in a long time. Now we have to watch guys like Vitali Klitchko or some 40 year old guy who should have retired ten years earlier.

  • hmmmm!blah blah it's was better before with our american legends blablah...go watch the coming third shot between vasquez and marquez and stop crying!the two precedents fights in 2007 between those guys were harder and more beautifull than most of the 80s legendary fights! You had the first pavlik taylor in 2007 also or the hatton mayweatherPS:Vitali klitschko is a great warrior, look his soo amazing fight with lennox lewis...

  • i thought hearns' chin was shit but this proved me wrong,i thought he was all attack but now i know he's an all-time great

  • The punches from Roldan sounded like bombs. I was there that night. I couldn't believe that Roldan was coming back after being in truble in the first round. The better and more experienced boxer, Hearns, prevailed.

  • what? have you even seen the hagler/roldan fight? it was a left hook that slid behind haglers head then he pulled down on it, hagler was just off balance, but he gave hagler one of hes toughest fights, hagler couldnt hit him with anything good till towards the end as roldan got tired, was a great battle :)

  • Juan roldan was a great puncher and even was credited with putting hagler down on one knee. I loved this fight.
