OMGEEEE!!! I thought I was one of very few that got down with JILL JONES!!! I LOVE HER!!! She is extremely underrated!!! I agree that this album got nowhere NEAR the recognition it should have!!! AWESOME voice...
Prince or not Prince ... I really don't care! Folks, this is from 1987!! But to me it sounds as fresh as if produced in 1993 or so. There were not too few songs in '87 that even sounded old back then ;)
Jill was one of The Kid's inner circle of confidantes (to put it politely). She appears in all his movies, as an employee at 7th Ave in Purple Rain, and as part of Mary Sharon's P***y Posse in Under The Cherry Moon, and I believe a member of the Time's entourage in Graffiti Bridge. It's also widely believed that "She's Always In My Hair" was written about her & Prince's relationship. she's def a Purple soldier 4 Sho! 55436 inthemix
Prince was hanging out a lot with Miles D, during this time period.... The horns started to get more play in Prince's joints around this time.... mid & late 80's. We got 1 non-music lover on this video I see.
I picked up the cd in a discount bin many years ago...glad I did. Love the 80s....all this music was great, The Family, The Time, Jesse Johnson, Vanity 6.....peace.
C'mon people, you mean to tel me that's not Prince on the bass!?!? Those horn arrangement arent his!?!?! Claire Fischer did almost all of his string arrangements back then,so why wouldnt she be on here? Jill was touring and singing w/ him around this time,so it goes without saying that he would write stuff for her.
prince actually wrote the entire jill jones record.i have a book called the vault which says this song violet blue was recorded by prince in early october 1986 in his home studio he also recorded at these sessions
Jill was allegedly one of Prince's girlfriends, and sang backup for him. She also sang backup on Teena Marie's LPs for many years. Look for her credit on Teena's "Lady T" LP, singing backup on "Behind the Groove" and other cuts.
I had this tape back in the day, lost it when i graduated from college, and I've been searching high and low for a CD since. This is one of my top 10 albums of all time! Prince had the midas touch back in the eighties and early nineties!
@chunkybacker yes he did.... I have been looking at Wendy and Lisa's videos and I realized how much they contributed to the greatness of his sound bk then.
she can sing, i dont know why prince would put her on the back burner for a lesser talent e.i. vanity apples......etc ( even tho i love them too) smh lol and this is come from someone who wasnt even born in the 80s
This song has a very Prince "Parade" era feel to it, very near in production to Anotherloverholenyohead. I love it. Purple Factoid - The studio was lit in blue and other little props were brought in to give it a very nightclub, Jazz club, Jazz singer vibe...in the studio. Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss provide those wonderful horns.
No way! you still have the cassette? I like this song too. I remember I was in LA when I heard this song and purchased the cassette. Unfortunately, I don't have the cassette anymore...that was 22 years ago! LOL.
@cbruns71471, written by Jill Jones, produced by David Z and Jill Jones, arranged by Clare Fischer. Brent Fischer on percussion. Who plays the rest is unclear, but there are a lot of unusual non-Paisley Park musicians on other tracks, including Randy Brecker, Steve Gadd, Hugh McCracken. From what I've read Prince had relatively little to this with the album and nothing with this song.
Don't let the album credits fool you. This album wouldn't be so hard to find (not to mention expensive) if Prince had relatively little to do with it. "Mia Bocca", "G-Spot", "All Day, All Night", and "Baby, You're A Trip" were originally recorded by Prince (between '82-'84). "With You" was the only song that Prince wasn't involved in, but it's still a cover of a Prince tune. Prince didn't do everything, but he had a huge hand in crafting this album. He wrote every song on the album.
@modifiedcontent : this was the problem. You can hear that this was influenced by prince (the early prince). And this music was good, but not commercialized for the pop and dancefloors. What a waste on talent. she was and is gifted.

great germany. We love you Jill and the rest of "Chic". Le Freak your life.
Ive been lookin 4 this song for years . Use to have it when it first came out. Brings back great memories !! Love the bass . I wonder if that prince on the bass ?
Damn, I thought I was the only one who remembered this. I can remember blasting this in dorms. It's definitely Prince on the arrangement.
PS I remember passing on the original Vanity 6 CD about 10 years. They only printed a few of these since CDs were so new in mid 80s. I'm sure that CD would be worth about
i just found the CD very recently & i got it for $20! i was surprised "1" bcuz i found it, & "2", the price! original (not a copy), wrapped & everything! (i was searchin' for that 1 & Elisa Fiorillo's "I Am" CD also, which i found! i have the best luck!)
it's on cd, but actually hard to get last asking price i saw for the original was 400 dollars for cd..i'm glad i bought the album back in the day...i think most of her stuff is tied to prince, so he has it locked away in his vault...since he was sexin her at one point in life
this is by far the bEst song jill has evver recorded..so sultry and soulful in a blue-funk kind of jazzyness..

what a gorgeous song. if there was any justice in this world, jill jones should have been a huge star. the entire album is beautiful art.

It's hilarious reading the credits on this song; "written by Jill Jones". Sure it was.
Beautiful song nonetheless.

This is one of those songs that i feel sorry for those who have never heard it.
It's a shame this album did not get the attention it deserved. But it lives on. It's status as treasure only grows more precious year after year.

Jill Jones is definitely an underrated singer from the Prince camp. She sounds better than Vanity and Apollonia.
