@bleedblue83 Don't lump things like Protestant all together. Protestant just means "not Catholic". There are many Protestant Churches that accept evolution. Church of England is one of them.
@micmac274 Yes, yes...we all watched "The Tudors," kiddo. We're all aware that there's more than one "Protestant" religion. But by and large, the people who reject Evolution ARE Protestants. So, any statement about anti-evolutionists IS going to be about Protestants. Just because there are exceptions doesn't change the rule (and the Church of England is about the most fucked up religion in Christianity...created just so a horny king could divorce and remarry).
Thank You so much Julia for sharing your lifes story with those of us who wish to listen. Being raised catholic I can sooo relate to every story you tell. I am so much more at PEACE knowing that my own beliefs were right all along! Take Care!
This song is ironic, because during the first verse she talks about being in Catholic church and being confessed, and in the 2nd verse she says science proved it to be false - However, there is no contradiction with science and Catholicism. It would have been better had she talked about protestantism, they're the nutty ones who think the Earth is 6000 years old.
@bleedblue83 The second lyric says: "I came back home, I won't let go. So much more for me to know. I read the 'Tao of Physics,' and all those quantum mystics..."
Why do you think that means she says science is false. Maybe you're not familiar with "quantum mystics" like Deepok Choprah? They're charlatans, not scientists. Look it up. She's referring to the popular writers who try to prove nonsense (like an afterlife or psychic abilities) with physics, and use technical jargon incorrectly.
@bleedblue83 Excuse me, but which Catholicism are you referring to? It changes every generation, after all. For instance, only recently they decided that dead infants go straight to heaven, not to purgatory. That just DAWNED on the pope, eh? What about the millions of believers who mourned their dead children spending all that time in purgatory? I guess they suffered needlessly all these generations? And you think the Protestants are nuts? It's ALL NUTS! I mean, invisible people, virgin birth?
@Sheldonwh I agree. I'm not Catholic, and they may be crazy, but I respect them a helluva lot more than Protestants. Protestants are those crazy right-wing nuts you always hear about, the gun crazy, militia type people who go around trying to convert everyone. Catholics don't try to convert you - they prefer you come to them . Catholics are also much more upper class, while Protestantism seems to attract prisoners and trailer parks, lol. I feel there is an "insanity" to Protestantism.
@bleedblue83 Oh yes, Catholics have a much more upper-class way of making sure that you keep the money flowing their way. Mother Teresa, for instance, spent her entire Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech haranguing the audience about the "horrors of abortion" (she gave to exception for rape or incest, btw), and of the terrible sin of contraception (no exception for AIDS-plagued Africa, btw). Catholics also hate gays, so yes, much more upper class and respectful. Oh, and that Inquisition!
@bleedblue83 The Catholics believe that a god exists. That, in itself, defies science. They also believe that a virgin had a baby. Again, in defiance of science. They think that that baby grew up and healed sick and dying people, and that he rose from the dead. All in defiance of science. They also believe that a man (called the Pope) has a psychic hotline to this god (who is three people all mixed together, but also separate...huh?), and can tell us his will. No science there either. Better?
@Sheldonwh First of all the belief in intelligent design does not defy science. They belief a virgin had a baby with the help of a greater power, again, not defying science.
I was just arguing with a Christian board about why God doesn't exist - and I was yelled at by many Christians and was told that if I find Jesus I will see the light, which I disagree with. So we're on the same page as far as our beliefs go - but Catholicism and Science do not conflict with one another at all.
@Sheldonwh 2. Unlike Protestants or Evangelicals, Catholicism don't have an origin of the Earth in their creed. Therefore, Catholics accept evolution. Catholics also accept that we are made up of atoms and anything scientific. Their only central belief is that a God in the form of a man died for us, which doesn't conflict with science at all - science doesn't study Gods and has never, so therefore the belief in a God is 'above' what science can measure.
This is a good clarification, nispen; I was, however, talking about the bridge phase in cosmology adjustment. My intended inference is that being spoon fed religion and being spoon fed the perspectives of college professors both involve the same amount of autonomous scrutiny -- which is none at all.
@RoseCrossVato Spoken like someone who never got an education. College professors don't spoonfeed you information. They teach you to be a critical thinker, and to challenge conventional "wisdom."
Yes -- according to her, she was visited by Mormon missionaries, and that encounter made her begin taking a bible study class at her church. She couldn't justify what she read, regardless of approach.
Excellent! Formidable! Jill and Julie;you two are god-sends!--insert laugh here--Finally! A point of view that speaks truth to power, and hits me where I live. Thank you for this!
Awesome song... I just have to point out though, its the same chord prog. as "question" by Rhett Miller... at least the verses. It's not a criticism, just an observation. :)
I first heard about Letting Go of God in Richard Dawkins' book The God Delusion and decided to buy the audio version of LGoG from iTunes about six months ago. I just can't stop listening to it on my iPod. I must have listened to the whole thing over 20 times now. It is funny, moving and informative in equal measures. I just LOVE it. I can't wait for the movie version to come out and I hope I will be able to see it here in the UK. Thanks for sharing your story with us Julia. You are fantastic xxx

Apparently, the bridge to her atheist enlightenment came from a quantum physics textbook.
