I wonder if Eddie Z will write his own FTM story like Chaz Bono did this year. It would be very interesting to hear his (her) POV from the wicked mysterious world of Canadian Music of the 1980s.
I forgot about these guys - but that track is great. So 80s - so very Toronto in sound as well. Good times, no texting and cell phones. We got together face to face in those days. Life goes on though eh?
I'm shocked at how many people like this. I remember when I was a kid watching these guys on Toronto Rocks in an interview deflecting critizism that they were soft, effeminates. The drummer (I think it was him) said, "no, we're tough!" and shook his fists.
OH MY GOD I totally remember this song from the 80's. I was born in 1980 & remember all the good old times of the 80's!!!! the music, the movies, the clothes.
I really miss it. Long live the 80's!!! PS. this song is so cool, i haven't heard it for so many years until just now...
@ppl00125 you were born in 1980? It's neat to think that a youngster like you could get a special vibe from the same song that I thought was pretty cool......and I was born in '68.....

LOL - I've been looking for this song everywhere! I remember it from my teenage years, but I had the title wrong. I remembered it as "livn' on the A side."
Probably cuz I remember they did a short promo spot on a video show where they said something like, "We're Cats Can Fly, and we'll see you on the A side!" or something like that ...
I just heard that song for the very first time on 2/11/09, in my mum's car, and now, I'm addicted to this song, I can't get enough of it! It's AWESOME! And I gotta say, all four members of Cats Can Fly are VERY TALENTED vocalists!
I need to find this record on vinyl or gold CD to get the highest quality audiophile sound. Don't want to waste any spectrum of precious fidelity that might be hidden in this track.
OK first of all this came out in early 86 and Video Hits ran until 93, it's just that Samantha Taylor left the show in 89. This is definitely a great song, too bad they only had the one hit.
I'm in grade 7 again and memories of Samantha Taylor and Video Hits!!! Classic track from '86 or' 87... What a great comment from the displayguy - I felt like telling the readers about Jeff Healey on this thread!! I was really sad for days - he was such a part of the Canadian music landscape. His irony and intelligence were first rate. There is a great version of "see the light" featuring Omar Hakim and Marcus Miller. Kudos to Jeff for pursuing jazz and trumpet.
I can see guys getting mad at you cause the women love ya! My old lady read through all the comments. She MELTS when Peter sings in his deep voice at 1:01, when Mitch laughs at 3:01 at Eddy singing in his mother's voice at 2:42, and Dave's dancing at 3:08 and 3:30. We guyz are just jealous.

Thank you thedisplayguy. I will put thedisplayguy from You Tube in my source list. It is due March 5 and has to be a Canadian group and song from before I was born. We just say who the artist is, who wrote the song, meaning of the lyrics, instruments, and why we chose that. I will get this done this weekend! Thank you.
Worst "band" ever. When you listen to them, turn the volume all the way down. Top ten reasons the suck 1 their hair 2 their clothes 3 their shitty instruments 4 their lack of any talent 5 can't tell what sex any of them are 6 they can't sing 7 they're cheesy 8 the singers eye brows 9 horrible drum air band 10 they're gay
P.S. I actually don't think Greg Hambleton's production was bad at all. Maybe not "major label," but certainly better than a lot of D.I.Y. I'm sure we'll both agree you got a raw deal from Epic.
Get out? Funnier than that? I don't believe that's possible! That siamese cat makes that shot. I thought all of you should have had cats draped across your shoulders. Perhaps a tabby... a persian... and of course a Himalayan. Because if you've ever seen a Himalayan, you know how photogenic they are. That photo came with my copy of the "Father Was a Foreigner" single -- another great track that should've been redone for the album.
"Perfect Stranger," that's it. Eddie, do you remember the promo photo you guys did for Peer-Southern? Peter (bearing more than passing resemblance to Father Guido Sarducci) with a siamese cat draped across his shoulder. David in his midriff "Jazz'd" tank. You in your "Ed" gas station attendant shirt. Anybody laughs at this music video, I'll be happy to break that photo out. I promise you they'll forget ALL ABOUT the video!
Cats Can Fly actually released two albums (although the first one, "Touch Touch," was an EP). Some of the tracks, such as this and "Cold Hands Warm Heart," were rerecorded for the Epic LP. Others, like the fine title track and another whose title I forget, but I believe Eddie composed himself ("Passing Stranger" ?) were exclusive to it. Which is a shame, because it's not easy to find. But totally worth the price of admission thanks to the keyboardist. He sports a gay pornstache on the cover!
Such a shame they only released the one disc. I really liked this song alot back in '86 (I was 13 just like some of you) and it still stands as one of my favourite songs ... EVER! :)
I have to thank you guys. This song means so much to so many and applies to all kinds of situations. I know of a girl who was born a genius, now is losing her ability to walk, has scoliosis, and maybe even Rett Syndrome. Your song will help her to adjust her plan in life, look at things differently, and TURN IT ALL AROUND. She is a champion! I expect she will play this video a lot on her laptop if in hospital and it will help her get through it all. Thanks so much!
It would be great to have Cats Can Fly playing again! I know that is very hard to the band come back again, but it would be awesome! And I think how many great bands like these never get the chance that they deserve to be on the top. But I am glad to know this band and I know that there are a lot of fans of Cats Can Fly around the world.
Hey, I will go to Brazil also....:) so two people in the audience HAHA!!!! I have there so I guess I could bring them. It would be fun to the people that keep commenting here.
Peter is alive and well and is managing a music publishing company. There was a lot of talent in the band and we always had a great time but live shows were the best. The fans were always good to us.
Where are Cats Can Fly from? I grew up in Mississauga and don't remember a concert...I went to Level 42 but maybe not a Massey Hall. I missed you guys:(
Hey all it looks we do have fan club....glad to know you're still cute for a old guy....we need a photo:)
If you do a tour - like Bands Reunite or something please let me know. I live in Arizona these days but I'm a big fan and will fly where ever to see you perform again...I need the CD, I can't ever download the songs...BOOHOO. Keep the comments coming and maybe will get them back:)
I think we have an Eddie fan club here brewing. I remember a video/song he had around 1989. It was pretty good, but I understand if artists prefer to keep things in the vaults. Yet: considering pop music is basically dead it's great to hear music from the past that might have been overlooked.
Hey Eddie if you are thinking of remastering the CD PLEASE DO. I love the video and I love your voice...really. I was one the people bidding on Ebay but YEP, it went a little high in price.
I heard this song again yesterday on prime time radio. I could name several songs from 1986 that are 6 feet under, but this somehow stands the test of time and has that special "je ne sais quoi". Great job guys.
Hi! I saw you in Toronto ... I think in 86, when you opened for Level 42. It was pretty good> I had only heard Flippin to the A Side but the rest of your music wasn't too bad. How was it working with The Level?
BTW - the singer in Cats can fly sounds great. I love good vocals. I think that's why I never got into the 90's sound. I think it's strange but good that this song, other songs by Frozen ghost, Payolas, the Box get regular airplay again. They kind of got dumped on for being "Can con" at the time: but they sound a lot better now, especially considering the sorry state of pop music.
The guy on keyboards is a great singer too. I thought I saw that was a Roland keyboard but now I don't see that. I am by no means an expert, but in my opinion Roland keyboards were the best back then and now.
No, I'm just a crazy music fan who uses pseudonyms. I am actually a classical musician and choir director, but I was an absolute pop/rock fan growing up and can't shake the influence. I knew every pop song ever. Greg Kihn band from 1976-1983 had power pop magic, the earlier the better..
Oh my goodness, thedisplayguy. Level 42 is one of my all time favourites. That would have been one of the best concerts ever to see! New Year's Eve 1985/1986 I did make it to Maple Leaf Gardens for OMD and the Thompson Twins concert, but if I had the option, I would have gone to Cats Can Fly and Level 42 anytime!
Yesterday at 5:20 p.m I heard this song on the top-rated JACK FM in Vancouver. The song gave me goosebumps. Think of the irony. Originally making about #27 ? on the Vancouver am charts in 1986 (o.k I know it made the top 10 in certain markets)
The song and band folded soon after that.
Now people all around the lower mainland hear it in the supermarket, construction site, car radio.
The young kids are getting into the 80's music from television shows like the series "Popular" which plays songs from Kajagoogoo, Falco, etc. Once they find they like this stuff they check their parents music out! Also, it is so great to know the future of the world is in such capable hands as these young people who care so and will say so. :)
Thank you thedisplayguy for your compliment to neonstephanie. She is a sweetie! If she sees someone being bullied she goes immediately to them. If a child is crying at school she gives them a hug. She was thrilled with your compliment and told her friends. There are some grade seven's now checking out your video! Thanks again!
Flip544, I see 4 talented musicians, singers, dancers, with style, are hard-working, know who they are and what they are about, and seem genuine and sincere. I hear each one's voice individually, yet they all go together so well collectively. This was a big hit in London, ON. What wonderful memories! The one has such a winning smile. The keyboardist is great, the lead singer dances well, and the drummer's voice is INCREDIBLE as well as his talent on the drums. Thank you Cats Can Fly!
I remember growing up and liking this song. Now after all these years, and seeing the video, I think it's so gay. Couldn't the lead singer at least make some actual attempt at really looking like he's playing an instrument..the drummer rocks
I really like th syle it is effective . My fav is the drummer it takes alot of talent to play the drum like that. And to also sing like that! good Job !
I remember when this song and video were released around 1984, and I was a 17-year old guitarist in a hard rock band. I immediately thought that it was a wonderful song. However, I never did tell my band mates that I thoroughly enjoyed this genre of music as much (if not a little more) than the music we were playing. Now, from the perspective of a (alas) 40-year old university academic, I have come to appretiate how this song instills a wonderful sense of deja vu.
I just have to say it. You guys (Cats Can Fly) are EXTREMELY talented (instrumental, vocals, personality comes across, ingenuity, etc.). With so much potential, the fact that you guys got scr-w-d (oops, I'm known for not swearing), is tragic! You guys seem so humble too. Maybe you guys could get back together again for an appearance on the Juno Awards or something? Canada loves you! You are an icon in Canadian music and will not be forgotten.
I think it's great that the drummer himself is offering his insights. He always seemed like a nice and talented guy, and seemed to be one of the most prominent members of the group. There are further Can con vids for Kurdtss to be dug out: New Regime, Big Bang, Eye Eye, FM (anyone remember Dreamgirl?)
I remember in 1986 that some members of the band would write fans back with snail mail explaining that Cats can fly means "musicians taking off and succeeding". Success is relative, the album sold I think 30.000, which ironically might even be considered a sales success in the meantime today due to all the illegal downloading! Anyhow I think the song is a classic: vocals, playing, and production that holds up well. One of the ultimate Canadian 80's songs.
I admit I've pulled the tape with Flippin'... out a few times, even recently, just for laughs with friends. However I like the depiction of the big bad city, and the silhouetted lovers sneaking around. Very sexy. And it's not a bad little song, as far as 80s cancon goes. Thanks for the memories!
p.s. New Regime - now THEY had some videos to make one chuckle.
I can help clear this up, display guy, or should I say...Eddie Z. I don't know how many people out there can name the drummer of Cats Can Fly but I could ever since my friends and I saw that episode of Switchback. We all loved the part where Shawn whatshisname asked when the fourth guy came along, and Eddie said "That's me! I'm the fourth guy!" So funny, the kind of thing that 13 year old girls can laugh at over and over. You became our favourite member.
I owe a debt of gratitude to this song. For the countdown airings of its 1500th chart, 1050 Chum (Toronto) deejays asked trivia questions to its listeners for prizes. One was 'What song played at 'X' hour?'. I phoned in, got through, guessed this song & was right. I won a poster of the chart and 45s of all thirty singles. Thank you Cats Can Fly! :-)
Let's bring back the 80s and stay there forever.

That photo came with my copy of the "Father Was a Foreigner" single -- another great track that should've been redone for the album.
somebodysomewere 4 years ago

He sports a gay pornstache on the cover!
somebodysomewere 4 years ago

If you do a tour - like Bands Reunite or something please let me know. I live in Arizona these days but I'm a big fan and will fly where ever to see you perform again...I need the CD, I can't ever download the songs...BOOHOO. Keep the comments coming and maybe will get them back:)
spellack59 4 years ago
I think we have an Eddie fan club here brewing. I remember a video/song he had around 1989. It was pretty good, but I understand if artists prefer to keep things in the vaults. Yet: considering pop music is basically dead it's great to hear music from the past that might have been overlooked.
gregkihn 4 years ago
Hey Eddie if you are thinking of remastering the CD PLEASE DO. I love the video and I love your voice...really. I was one the people bidding on Ebay but YEP, it went a little high in price.
I had the cassette and it just broke:(
Let me know if you will remaster it. Please.

Hi Eddie, how are you?
I hope you read this message from a big fan from Brazil.
I LOVE the cd that you and the band released on 86. It's a true AOR masterpiece.
Do you know that when the CD is listed on ebay it's always sold by at least US$ 150?
So I ask: why don't you make a re-release of this brilliant album for all fans around the world?
Best wishes!

I heard this song again yesterday on prime time radio. I could name several songs from 1986 that are 6 feet under, but this somehow stands the test of time and has that special "je ne sais quoi". Great job guys.

BTW - the singer in Cats can fly sounds great. I love good vocals. I think that's why I never got into the 90's sound. I think it's strange but good that this song, other songs by Frozen ghost, Payolas, the Box get regular airplay again. They kind of got dumped on for being "Can con" at the time: but they sound a lot better now, especially considering the sorry state of pop music.
gregkihn 4 years ago
The guy on keyboards is a great singer too. I thought I saw that was a Roland keyboard but now I don't see that. I am by no means an expert, but in my opinion Roland keyboards were the best back then and now.
joanielovesjazz 4 years ago
No, I'm just a crazy music fan who uses pseudonyms. I am actually a classical musician and choir director, but I was an absolute pop/rock fan growing up and can't shake the influence. I knew every pop song ever. Greg Kihn band from 1976-1983 had power pop magic, the earlier the better..
gregkihn 4 years ago
Oh my goodness, thedisplayguy. Level 42 is one of my all time favourites. That would have been one of the best concerts ever to see! New Year's Eve 1985/1986 I did make it to Maple Leaf Gardens for OMD and the Thompson Twins concert, but if I had the option, I would have gone to Cats Can Fly and Level 42 anytime!

Hey, this is a great thread!

Ah yes, that winning smile, I know what you mean. I think his name is Mitch, and it is right after "Have some good advice".

Thank you Cats Can Fly!
joanielovesjazz 4 years ago
I remember growing up and liking this song. Now after all these years, and seeing the video, I think it's so gay. Couldn't the lead singer at least make some actual attempt at really looking like he's playing an instrument..the drummer rocks
flip5440 4 years ago
I really like th syle it is effective . My fav is the drummer it takes alot of talent to play the drum like that. And to also sing like that! good Job !

COOL video! Thanx Stephanie for telling me about this.
withlovelivelife 4 years ago
I remember when this song and video were released around 1984, and I was a 17-year old guitarist in a hard rock band. I immediately thought that it was a wonderful song. However, I never did tell my band mates that I thoroughly enjoyed this genre of music as much (if not a little more) than the music we were playing. Now, from the perspective of a (alas) 40-year old university academic, I have come to appretiate how this song instills a wonderful sense of deja vu.
biltong123 4 years ago
I just have to say it. You guys (Cats Can Fly) are EXTREMELY talented (instrumental, vocals, personality comes across, ingenuity, etc.). With so much potential, the fact that you guys got scr-w-d (oops, I'm known for not swearing), is tragic! You guys seem so humble too. Maybe you guys could get back together again for an appearance on the Juno Awards or something? Canada loves you! You are an icon in Canadian music and will not be forgotten.

Time for a reunion tour, and please come to Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Thank you for posting this.
joanielovesjazz 4 years ago
I think it's great that the drummer himself is offering his insights. He always seemed like a nice and talented guy, and seemed to be one of the most prominent members of the group. There are further Can con vids for Kurdtss to be dug out: New Regime, Big Bang, Eye Eye, FM (anyone remember Dreamgirl?)
gregkihn 4 years ago
I remember in 1986 that some members of the band would write fans back with snail mail explaining that Cats can fly means "musicians taking off and succeeding". Success is relative, the album sold I think 30.000, which ironically might even be considered a sales success in the meantime today due to all the illegal downloading! Anyhow I think the song is a classic: vocals, playing, and production that holds up well. One of the ultimate Canadian 80's songs.
gregkihn 4 years ago
