@MarloweDK That applies to every other non-English-speaking country I think :P I also think it is very ugly when I hear a Dutchman speaking English. But your English doesn't sound dumb into my ears at all.
And besides that, I would like to say "tak", for al the inspiration and huge technique improvements you have given me since the past year I am watching your videos!
First of all two thumps up... great stuff !!! Can you please tell my what model of double you use, what mics, amps and strings are you using? I would be most obliged...
i like playing anything with strings for example i can both play guitar and double bass together like some people do but i dont do that often. first time i played a double bass was at the kurri kurri nostagia festival in Australia. very fun instrument to play
A 3/4 Double bass is generally about 185 Cm (6'2") Without the peg. Almost all Double basses are 3/4 basses. When playing the lower tuning peg should be at the bottom of your ear hightwise.
The first 5 seconds of this were epic let alone the rest
I regret watching this video...its only added to my ambition to buying a double bass, shame about my unemployment :(
however I do disagree about about having to learn classical, this was what I was taught for sax but I bounced against that regime and did just fine in 6 years
Just started out on the double bass after having given up on guitars - frets are too damned cramped, so I can't get a decent sound, and EVERYONE else who plays the guitar (Something like 70% of all musicians play the guitar :D) is better than you, so it gets demoralising. So yeah, found the double bass recently and decided I liked playing it. Any pointers for a complete newbie?
If you guys like the upright bass check out jazz musician Esperanza Spalding. She talks about her new album, Chamber Music Society in this video, Youtube.com/watch?v=uk-oJGAXSjA
Your playing style is similar to mine (well I'm the brother to this account lol) only I plays guitar and mixes this style into more rock/metal style playing :D
Cool. I'm a total DB newbie (been playing bass guitar for many many years). I'm wondering what strings/pickup/amplifier you're using here? I've got a Bassmax on my bass and I'm using my bass guitar amp but it doesn't sound anything like the acoustic sound of my bass.
@13A55player Heck yeah, just look up some good old-school psychobilly like The Meteors or even some rockabilly like the peacocks (you'll have to be more selective on your songs with them though).
marlowe, although i Love your web lessons and especially your bass guitar playing. Your technique for double bass is waaaay off. If one should play like that (bended wrists etc) for long he'll wind up having serious muscle problems!
do not buy double basses form factories! buy trhem from a luthier, a classical instrument is NOT like any electric quitar or bass. if you buy a factory made bass it will either be just decent or terrible
your experience on the electric bass shines through... you really don't LOOK like much of a beginner here ;) Loving the new vids, very informative thanks
haha i wanna get one too... how long does it take to be good enough to play a gig with it? i'm 19 and have been playing electric bass for 7 or 8 years now. is it a big difference between the double bass and the fretless bass? i guess so xD
@CptChaos88 I played the electric for 3 to 4 years when I started to learn the double bass at around 18. I'm 21 now and play gigs with the music shools symphony orchestra once in i while an with my band. It's fun and i acourage you to try out this beautifull instrument.
But dont forget about the trouble of haveing your little baby all around in your backpack. I hope im going to be a transverse flute player in my next live. You knew the got sub contra flutes there too? :o)
Great to see that you are having fun on the double bass! I tried the double bass once and was so discouraged by the brutal physicality of it that I didn't think it was for me. I do plan to learn it eventually though...looks fun!
It is very interesting to follow your approach on this new area for you - how you use familiar techniques from electric bass with this "big-ass violin"!
@MarloweDK Amen brother! I ordered one from ebay awhile back and though it was a good looking bass at a great price, it needed a lot of work to get it to sound decent. Actually, it cost more to set her up than the purchase priceof the bass! Thanks for the vids - I'm subscribing right after i post this. :)

how tall is a double bass????????????
remo07bassclot 10 months ago
@remo07bassclot Depends of how high you set the end pin
MarloweDK 10 months ago
@MarloweDK and how tall you are im 5 1 and play a 1/4
leatherfacefan1974 5 months ago
@remo07bassclot
Depends on the size, if you have a 1/4 size, its about 5 ft without the end pin out
1/2 is only 5' 4" without end pin
3/4 is 5' 7
and i have no idea what a full size bass is like but I imagine its like 6 ft tall
Kysedilla 7 months ago
@remo07bassclot slightly taller then the douche playing it and his egooo

Hey MArlowe
you may want to check out adambenezra's channel to see how far upright bass can be pushed
You and he have definitely given me the itch to go outside the electric bass realm
keep up the great work!!

you're an excellent bassist, but with that being said you have to revise your left-hand technique, it's still in electric bass mode lol.
