  • hi! great vids! i was wondering if thats a carved upright or a laminated? congrats!

  • @MarloweDK That applies to every other non-English-speaking country I think :P I also think it is very ugly when I hear a Dutchman speaking English. But your English doesn't sound dumb into my ears at all.

And besides that, I would like to say "tak", for al the inspiration and huge technique improvements you have given me since the past year I am watching your videos!

  • Soud like RATM bassline...

  • First of all two thumps up... great stuff !!! Can you please tell my what model of double you use, what mics, amps and strings are you using? I would be most obliged...

  • Ultimate goal for life is learning Bach's Cello Suite on upright bass...

  • did u use an amp or is this its natural sound?

  • Is it me or does the first couple of second sound like rage against the machine?

  • Muito bom esse video está na lista dos meus favoritos.....

  • red snapper????

  • sounds so damn sexy! damn it! awesome.

  • Watched the video and didn't notice your name! But I can recognize that ridiculous accent anywhere xDD Rimeligt fed video :D

  • sounds KOOL!!!!

  • Glad to see you having funky fun on the upright!

  • Hey, I was wondering, which right hand technique are you using?

And could you tell me how to do it? Please! :)

  • When I hear this I can only think with Les Claypool

  • how's the transition between electric bass and an upright? i'm still an electric learner but i was just curious...

  • the full sise bass is about 7 feat tall!!!

  • Oh man, you look totally designed, I guess you spend a lot of time in front of the mirror before making this video, hahaha!

  • i like playing anything with strings for example i can both play guitar and double bass together like some people do but i dont do that often. first time i played a double bass was at the kurri kurri nostagia festival in Australia. very fun instrument to play

  • how tall is a double bass????????????

  • @remo07bassclot Depends of how high you set the end pin

  • @MarloweDK and how tall you are im 5 1 and play a 1/4

  • @remo07bassclot

Depends on the size, if you have a 1/4 size, its about 5 ft without the end pin out

1/2 is only 5' 4" without end pin

    3/4 is 5' 7

and i have no idea what a full size bass is like but I imagine its like 6 ft tall

  • @remo07bassclot slightly taller then the douche playing it and his egooo

  • @remo07bassclot

A 3/4 Double bass is generally about 185 Cm (6'2") Without the peg. Almost all Double basses are 3/4 basses.

  • @remo07bassclot

A 3/4 Double bass is generally about 185 Cm (6'2") Without the peg. Almost all Double basses are 3/4 basses. When playing the lower tuning peg should be at the bottom of your ear hightwise.

  • Hey MArlowe

you may want to check out adambenezra's channel to see how far upright bass can be pushed

You and he have definitely given me the itch to go outside the electric bass realm

    keep up the great work!!

  • you're an excellent bassist, but with that being said you have to revise your left-hand technique, it's still in electric bass mode lol.

  • Is your neck cold?

  • Thanks for the the nice bassline but I'm sorry, it's nothing about upright bass lesson. You're more teaching how to play electric bass on a upright.

There is specific technic on a upright bass, yes there is !

  • i bet your neighbours like you xd

  • He is goood

    Dobar je :D

  • He's the skinny gay version of the lead singer of death cab for cutie+

  • this guy looks gay but hes a really good bass player

  • Holy

The first 5 seconds of this were epic let alone the rest

I regret watching this video...its only added to my ambition to buying a double bass, shame about my unemployment :(

however I do disagree about about having to learn classical, this was what I was taught for sax but I bounced against that regime and did just fine in 6 years

  • @Speekerful Well you need to learn to use a bow to be able to play in tune and classical music has the most material for that:-)

  • @MarloweDK That makes a lot of sense actually

nice videos, some very original vlogging material

  • Just started out on the double bass after having given up on guitars - frets are too damned cramped, so I can't get a decent sound, and EVERYONE else who plays the guitar (Something like 70% of all musicians play the guitar :D) is better than you, so it gets demoralising. So yeah, found the double bass recently and decided I liked playing it. Any pointers for a complete newbie?

  • Look out for the "purists" cause we should never play a bass like that....... i'm glad people are willing to try new things.

  • 2funky

  • you rock this! it makes me want to trade in my cello for a bass. :) groovy, man! very groovy!

  • nice scarf! lol

  • Are you in a band?

  • You look goofy as shit, but you have some talent my friend.

  • you're a great bass guitarist but double bass is a totally different ballgame! get a teacher. keep up the good work.

  • Sounds really nice. I love this playing.

  • Your playing style is similar to mine (well I'm the brother to this account lol) only I plays guitar and mixes this style into more rock/metal style playing :D

  • Cool. I'm a total DB newbie (been playing bass guitar for many many years). I'm wondering what strings/pickup/amplifier you're using here? I've got a Bassmax on my bass and I'm using my bass guitar amp but it doesn't sound anything like the acoustic sound of my bass.

  • thansk !

  • i heard that you can slap a double bass as well as a electric bass is that true

  • @13A55player Heck yeah, just look up some good old-school psychobilly like The Meteors or even some rockabilly like the peacocks (you'll have to be more selective on your songs with them though).

  • cool. u both look great! :))

  • marlowe, although i Love your web lessons and especially your bass guitar playing. Your technique for double bass is waaaay off. If one should play like that (bended wrists etc) for long he'll wind up having serious muscle problems!

  • I wish you were in california, oh yeah US..... well keep funkin.

  • Dude u R sick! You''ve gone from the electric bass to upright, and your still funky as ever.... !

  • yeah, sounds like flea ;o)

  • Chek out the right hand on guys like ron carter or ray brown... youre using an electric bass player right hand posture..

  • I want to play upright too, I have no upright yet, hard to get here in Maui.

  • haha i keep thinking of Primus' "over the falls" video

  • do not buy double basses form factories! buy trhem from a luthier, a classical instrument is NOT like any electric quitar or bass. if you buy a factory made bass it will either be just decent or terrible

  • very interesting! Double bass : the "grandfather" of electric bass-guitars! We'd do it the same with our parents... No ?

  • i love it marlowe, funk on a double bass kicks ass

  • your experience on the electric bass shines through... you really don't LOOK like much of a beginner here ;) Loving the new vids, very informative thanks

  • No thanks you MarlowDK, You are an amazing Bass player!! You can also teach us some Danish!! You have a great accent, i love it!!

  • i always love listenign to you playing bass.keep it up!!

  • if you like funky stuff on the double bass, you might want to listen to the big strides...

great lesson as always! I would like to have a double bass but I have no money and insufficient space...

  • haha i wanna get one too... how long does it take to be good enough to play a gig with it? i'm 19 and have been playing electric bass for 7 or 8 years now. is it a big difference between the double bass and the fretless bass? i guess so xD

  • @CptChaos88 I played the electric for 3 to 4 years when I started to learn the double bass at around 18. I'm 21 now and play gigs with the music shools symphony orchestra once in i while an with my band. It's fun and i acourage you to try out this beautifull instrument.

But dont forget about the trouble of haveing your little baby all around in your backpack. I hope im going to be a transverse flute player in my next live. You knew the got sub contra flutes there too? :o)

  • Great to see that you are having fun on the double bass! I tried the double bass once and was so discouraged by the brutal physicality of it that I didn't think it was for me. I do plan to learn it eventually though...looks fun!

  • jam i love the tone and sound where could you get one of theese

  • lol

  • awesomr

  • WOW! Big respect Marlowe, I never thought I'd be ecxited listening to someone playing double bass, but you make it sound awesome,- beginner or not!

  • Well done! Nice progression MarloweDK

  • Funk already!!!! you be playing slap on it by next week!!! lol

  • sounds primus-y, especially if you sped it up.

  • You're the most worth-while subscription on YouTube. Even better than the Onion News Network :) Thanks, and keep the lessons coming!

  • It is very interesting to follow your approach on this new area for you - how you use familiar techniques from electric bass with this "big-ass violin"!

    It's fun! 5* Thumbs up !

  • damn, this was awesome marlowe, i really enjoyed that style... you dont usually get to hear funk on a standing double bass

  • Would love to see you work out some of Sebastian Steinberg's lines from Soul Coughing on that double

  • strike! thomas is into double bass. this is going to be some serious fun(k)

  • now i wanna play double bass!:) you make everything sound so great !

  • haha you finally have a double bass, great playing as always mang

  • Sweet. What are the neighbors saying? Are they happy with your recent acquisition?

  • Marlo.., ur the mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • That was just awesome man. Love the sound.

  • nice!! :)

  • More Double bass lessons plz!!

ironic, I have one coming in the mail

I ordered like 2 weeks ago. lol

  • @MusicHero62 A double bass in the mail!! You are a brave man!

  • @MarloweDK Lol I had my Local store order it

so they are going to repair it when it comes.

  • @MarloweDK Amen brother! I ordered one from ebay awhile back and though it was a good looking bass at a great price, it needed a lot of work to get it to sound decent. Actually, it cost more to set her up than the purchase priceof the bass! Thanks for the vids - I'm subscribing right after i post this. :)

  • outstanding... U got skillzzz...

  • I was just waiting for this video!! really!! :D

  • I was just waiting for this video!! really!! :D

  • It wouldn't be out of place to hear that riff in a jazz piece but played as a triplet/swing feel. But i like the funk vibe, very organic.

  • You should wear a tuxedo when playing it.

    :P

  • @Anonymous1885 I don't know about the tux, but a top hat (with the scarf) would look quite fun(ky).

  • Hey MarloweDK! Can you do some videos playing lead blues with a bow on the double bass? It would be the most freaking awesome video you've ever done!

  • @CubeableGame I think..... i need a couple of years before i can pull that of!:-D

  • Thank' s for your explan, the bass it' s very clear and simple whit you Thank you man, your gost note it's very very delicious .......... sorry for my enlish but i' m a french bassman ...

  • So cool!!!

  • man you look and sound so slick playin that double-bass. Keep the vids comin

  • Some people just have it

  • It sounds like a bassline metallica would use

  • @Garfield4317 actually it does and they should use it!

  • Nice.

  • Sounds great.. Have you put up any info on what a double bass costs and which brands are better to keep an eye out for?

  • @Lulc Havent got a clue about buying double basses, i swapped this for a Warwick

  • That didn't take long Thomas, I wish half hours of practice with the EB brought me along as quickly.

    Well done.

  • Dude, you crack me up!!! "No animals...." That's what I usually say before I start to sing!!! We have a similar sense of humor, if only I could play the bass like you too!!!!!!!!!

    ~BookofIsaiah
